Community Structure And Production In A Marsh On The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, Michael Bassett Robblee

Four different plant communities occur on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Virginia, 1. Spartina alterniflora, 2. Distichlis spicata - Spartina patens - Juncus roemerianus, J. Baccharis halimifolia - Iva frutescens and 4. Spartina cynosuroides. The cordgrasses s. alterniflora and S. cynosuroides dominate the marsh.

Based-on standing crop estimates S. alterniflora produced 1218.6 grams dry wt/m2 and S.cynosuroides 1681.3 grams dry wt/m2, which is much higher than generally assumed for Virginia marshes. Evidence for the presence of two crops of S. alterniflora on the marsh during the growing season is-presented.

Vegetational composition and environmental parameters were analyzed. for 14 stands. Cluster diagrams based on index of similarity values illustrated interstand relationships. The Index of Fluctuation was developed for the analysis of intrastand dynamics. Based on the densities and numbers of species of trees and saplings within a stand, it indicated degree of compositional stability. It was concluded that present vegetation is divided into relatively distinct communities which have resulted, at least in part, from disturbance.

Studies Of Arundinaria: Experimental Induction Of Flowering And Additional Observation In The Field, Daniel L. Marsh

Arundinaria has been observed for three successive seasons at a site near Amity, Arkansas. In advance of the 1971 flowering period rhizomes were taken from the field, pruned, and placed either in an environmental chamber or in the greenhouse in water or in sandy soil. Flowering occurred under each condition, but was most rapid and profuse in transplants growing in sandy soil in the greenhouse. Observations point to the possibility of induction of flowering or to the possible existence of an annually flowering race. Possible economic uses are considered.

A survey of the vascular flora of Poinsett County, Arkansas was made over a period of 13 months. The fifteen field trips taken were planned to include representative soil associations and geographic areas within the county. Three hundred sixty-three species and varieties from eighty-three families were collected or examined.

Glyptostrobus Europaeus (Brongn.) Heer In Arkansas, Eugene B. Wittlake

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Glyptostrobus europaeus (Brongn.) Heer, a fossil gymnosperm is found at a few locations in central North America, in deposits of the Eocene. This work cites previously reported localities and reports a new site at Hooker, Arkansas. This deposit appears to be the most abundant for specimens of G. europaeus in the Eocene of North America. History of the Hooker site, characteristics of the living species G. pensilis (Abel) Koch and G. europaeus is presented. Worldwide distribution of both species through time, is discussed. Specimens of many parts of the life cycle of G. europaeus are recorded and illustrated.

SUMMARY

Laboratory tests were made to determine the effectiveness of different compounds and microbial groups in increasing the stability of Peorian loess lumps against the action of falling water drops. The influence of these on percolation tests in the laboratory was also determined.

Many organic substances-dextrose, sucrose, starch, peptone, cullulose, and gum arabic-did not themselves contribute directly to soil-structure stability, though these substances do furnish energy material for soil microorganisms, which can convert them readily into either microbial tissue or decomposition products that increase soil-structure stability. Lignin, proteins, oils, fats, waxes, resin, and paraffin increased the stability of lumps of …

From the preface we learn that this work is the result of nearly five years of active study of the floral covering of Nebraska, carried on by the members of the Botanical Seminar in the Botanical Survey of the State of Nebraska. The systematic study of the vegetation of Nebraska was begun by Dr. Bessey in 1884, and has since been carried on by him and his students, all previous collecting having been more or less desultory and unreliable.
