Photosynthetic Competence Of An Endangered Shrub, Lindera Melissifolia, Robert D. Wright

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Net photosynthesis and water relations were investigated in situ for a population of Lindera melissifolia in northeast Arkansas. Photosynthetic light use efficiency was found to be characteristic of a shade plant. Response of photosynthesis to temperature and CO₂ was insensitive over ranges found during the growing season. High water use efficiency was demonstrated, but under typical conditions of low light this was marginally beneficial. In comparison -with competing understory plants, the species proved to be photosynthetically competent. The data are evaluated in terms of the survival potential of the species.

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Two species of Erythronium grow in the eastern quarter of Nebraska, but there are none elsewhere in the State. Erythronium albidum is locally abundant, mostly in upland bur oak forests, and has been collected in 18 counties since 1864. Erythronium mesochoreum is becoming rare because its habitat--virgin tall-grass prairie--is disappearing. It is known to grow now in six east-central counties, but it probably could be found in some remnant prairies in all counties south and east of the Platte and Big Blue rivers, respectively. Distributional data about these species is herein brought up to date relative to earlier published reports. …

It will require the total cooperation of all members of the Soil Conservation District to remedy the area's problems. The first priority is for the control and better use of water on the recharge areas. The wheat/wheat/lupin rotation at present offers the best economic option. Lupins are well suited to the areas of lighter land. If lupins are planted on waterlogged soils or otherwise unsuitable soils, problems will arise and perhaps prejudice their use on the widespread suitable areas. The use of trees below rocky outcrops is an important measure to prevent excessive recharge of the deeper aquifers. Where trees …

Soil conservation survey collection

This project began with a requirement to produce a poster display for the Soil Conservation Districts Regional Workshops, in July 1988. A multi-dimensional display was produced at each of three workshops, accompanied by extensive publicity cover. As a result of the success of the displays, it was decided to maximise the exposure possible and tackle the Agricultural Show circuit. The Soil Show then travelled 7900 km, taking in 12 venues involving 16 days of public exposure in 10 weeks. It attracted up to 340 people per hour and won a number of awards. New distributional data are given for 54 species of vascular plants in Nebraska. Twenty are newly recorded for the State. 23 are shown to be more widespread than was previously known, seven are shown to have more restricted ranges than previously reported. the records of one species attributed to the State are shown to be based on misidentifications. and the presence in the State of three species collected long ago is confirmed by recent collections.

Three hundred ninety-two species, subspecies, and varieties have been recorded at Nine-Mile Prairie, a relict tall-grass prairie that has been reduced from 323 to 97 ha in the past 50 years. There are 218 native and 17 introduced herbaceous perennial species, and 73 native and 24 introduced annuals. Analogous numbers for biennials are 15 and 11, for shrubs are 14 and one, for trees are ten and three, and for woody vines are six and none. One hundred twenty-one native species are of central and eastern North American phytogeographic affinity, and 109 are of transcontinental affinity. Seventy-nine of the Prairie's …

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

New distributional data are provided for 27 species of vascular plants in Nebraska, eight newly recorded as growing wild in the State. The record of one species previously attributed to the State is shown to be based upon misidentified specimens, the range of another is shown to be much more restricted in Nebraska than previously reported, and nomenclature is corrected for two species.
