Trial 87PE37
This trial was conducted to confirm the results of 86WH53 and 87WH64. The trial commenced in September and in a glasshouse thus temperatures were higher and growth faster then in the field trials.
There are no significant effects of soil applied Glean or Hoegrass, and no interaction between the two herbicides.
In contrast, there is a very significant stunting of plants by Glean applied post emergence if Hoegrass is co-applied, but not by Glean alone.

The percentage of broken rice (Oryza sativa) kernels was determined after threshing the grain at varying cylinder speeds of the thresher and moisture contents of the grain at harvest. Moisture contents of the individual grain samples ranged from 12 to 26% and the two cylinder speeds were 600 and 1000 RPM. Significant differences between germplasm, cylinder speed and moisture content of the grain at harvest on milling yield was observed. For example, Newbonnet had the fewest broken kernels while Leah had the greatest amount of broken kernels. Lemont produced the highest total milling yield; whereas, L202 produced the lowest total …

3.1 Growth of doublegees under summer irrigation. (87A40)
The weevil, Perapion antiquum is a potential biological control agent of doublegee. However, it exhibits large population crashes during the summer months in the summer-dry areas of the Western Caped of South Africa, where it is native. It has been suggested that one means of successfully establishing Perapion in Western Australia could be to maintain populations in 'oases' over the summer months. The aim of this experiment was to determine how readily doublegee could be maintained in a non-senescent phase under irrigated and shaded conditions.

Trial 87WH61
Significant yield increases were obtained by applying chemicals pre-sowing to control capeweed. Time of spraying also had a significant effect on crop yield. Best yields were obtained from the treatment four weeks before seeding.
Good capeweed control (four weeks before seeding) may have been due to the condition of the weeds. Prior to spraying 50 mm of rain was recorded and may have freshened up the capeweed making it more susceptible to the chemical.

Blanket treatment with Glyphosate controlled some ryegrass. Additional treatment with Glean killed nearly all the ryegrass and gave the best kill of Lincoln weed.
Trial 87LG63 - Control of weed in pasture.
Ally and Glean although giving control, would be considered too phytotoxic to use on legume pastures. Applications of 2,4-D amine at 1 L would give marginal safety on Subterranean clovers, but would cause significant damage to medics.

DDT may no longer be applied to broadacre crops grown in Western Australia. It is being replaced by other more effective chemicals and with new methods of pest control. In recent years there has been increasing support from within the Australian wheat industry for the principal of wheat growers recieving payment for their grain according to market value.
Individual loads are now tested for quality characteristics such as hectolitre weight, unmillable material and moisture content.

High grain protein levels are preferred for many end-uses of wheat. However, there has been little or no incentive for farmers to use practices which would increase protein levels, because wheat payments are made without a price differential for proteinlevel, except where wheat could qualify for the Australian Hard grade.

Over the past 20 years, the average protein content of WesternAustralian wheat has ranged from 9.3 to 12.0 per cent, with a mean level of 10.4 per cent. At most grain receival points, in any one season, individual loads can often vary in protein content by as much as 5 per cent protein or more. Rainfall and soil fertility account for much of this variation.
