Trial 86SG25 - Salmon Gums Research Station
There was no apparent evidence of chlorsulfuron carryover at either site, although the medic stand was visually assessed as thinned on 19/8/1987. In the absence of grazing pressure however, the remaining plants compensated by 25/9/1987.

Evaluation Of Risk Factors Leading To Soil Destabilisation On The South Coastal Sandplain Of Western Australia, R V R Gwynn, P A. Findlater, J R. Edwards
Evaluation Of Risk Factors Leading To Soil Destabilisation On The South Coastal Sandplain Of Western Australia, R V R Gwynn, P A. Findlater, J R. Edwards
Resource management technical reports
The problems of wind erosion in part of the south coast of Western Australian sandplain area were described previously (Gorddard et al, 1981) with 7.3 per cent of cleared and 18.3 per cent of the cropped area showing evidence of sand blasting. Department of Agriculture trials have shown that the loss of the top four millimetres of top soil from pastured paddocks can reduce following crop yields by up to 20 per cent (Marsh and Carter, 1983). Animal production problems associated with wind erosion of soils have not been quantified, but a number of problems such as reduced carrying capacity …

Post Emergence Weed Control In Lupins., R. Madin, J. Buckley
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
As a general assessment in can be said that Tigrex is a safe and efficient herbicide for control of radish in wheat. Brodal alone was generally unsatisfactory for radish control. While Diuron + Brodal was safe and efficient, Ally and Brodal should not be used together. Diuron + MCPA gave poorer control than one would normally expect.

Trial 87LG65
Glean post-em @ 10 and 15 g/ha gave good control.
A later trial gave good control with Garlon 4800 or 2,4-D amine when sheep grazed the weed after treatment. Considerable pasture damage would be done with all chemicals during the growing season.

Manipulation Of The Soil Seed Reserves Of Bromus Diandrus And B. Rigidus By Enhancing The Breakdown In Seed Dormancy., A H. Cheam
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Location: South Perth Field Plots
Previous studies on the seed bank of Bromus diandrus indicated that shallow burial of newly shed seeds enhanced the breakdown in seed dormancy over the summer period. To bury the Bromus seeds one practical approach is to introduce sheep into the paddock.
This study is a repeat of the previous work but included B. rigidus, another species of Bromus, that is commonly ground growing in association with B. diandrus.
Location: South Perth Field Plots.

Wild Oat Control With Hoegrass With And Without Oil, R. Madin, J. Buckley
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87NO08
All treatments except Combine + Oil yielded significantly better than the control. Control of wild oats with Grasp was superior to many other treatments and this was reflected in the yield.
Trial 87N009
All treatments yielded significantly better than the control however there was no difference between herbicides, rates of use or additives. The exception being 0.75 L Hoegrass +WA which yielded significantly less than Grasp + oil.

Pasture Manipulation And Spraytopping For Barley Grass In A Medic Pasture., P. Stewart, L. Mann
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87KA53
The experiment was designed to determine:
1.The relative effectiveness of three herbicides with differing modes of action for barley grass control.
2. The phenological development stage at which barley grass is most susceptible to the common spraytopping herbicides.
3. The effects of early (pasture manipulation) and late (spraytopping) herbicide application on pasture production, pasture quality, barley grass control, medic growth and medic seed set.
4. The effects the herbicides have on the grain yield of a following cereal crop.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87ME61, 87ME68, 87WH49, 87ES39, 87NO80(B), 87NO80, 87WH67.
Doublegees in pasture are a major concern of many farmers in most of the agricultural areas in Western Australia. In pasture, doublegees tend to compete strongly the first year after crop and then decline in subsequent years. When cropped, doublegees again appear in large numbers. Unfortunately, the WADA recommendation for doublegee control in pasture of Tribunil at 850 g/ha is now very expensive at $17/ha. A possible alternative is 2,4-D amine, but medics are very sensitive to this. 2,4-DB is another recommendation, but this tends to have low efficacy against doublegees and …

Control Of Capeweed Prior To Sowing Crop., J. R. Pierce, B. J. Rayner

All treatments gave significant yield benefits over the untreated. Mixtures containing diuron did not cause any significant crop damage although yields on three of the treatments using 1.5 L/ha were low despite the good weed control.

Tolerance Of Ceral Varieties To Grasp, R. Madin, J. Buckley
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
The site remained mostly weed free throughout the season apart from some invasion by crassula spp. between plots. Some site variation was reflected in yield variation between replicates. The effects of Grasp on all varieties of wheat and Schooner barley were evident soon after spraying.

Crop Establishment, R. Madin, J. Buckley
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial effect of timing of Roundup CT and Spray.Seed application and cultivation on crop establishment and growth.
87WH53, 87NO85
The general tendency was for yield to decrease as the time to seeding after Spray.Seed application increased.
For trial 87NO85 the site was a 'problem', heavy textured soil where crop emergence problems following glyphosate had been experienced in previous years.
Crop establishment - time of seeding following herbicide application.
87A37
Use of a knockdown herbicide greatly increased yield when compared to the unsprayed treatments. Further work is required to resolve contrasting results.

Evaluation Of Additives With Bracken Herbicides Applied To Boomsprayer., R. Madin, J. Buckley
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Treatments were applied in December 1987. Height of the Bracken made application by boom difficult due to inability to adequately raise the boom to give clearance. Some brushing of the Bracken with the boom was unavoidable. Assessment of the trial will be made in March 1988.
