Profit-Maximizing Potassium Fertilizer Recommendations For Soybean, Michael P. Popp, Nathan A. Slaton, Trenton L. Roberts

Potassium (K) fertilizer has important yield and cost ramifications in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production. Rate recommendations are often based on expected yield response as predicted by a soil test. To that end, soybean response to K application rate studies were analyzed using 86 site-years from 2004 to 2019. We estimated a generic yield response curve across soybean cultivar and soil texture to allow calculation of profit-maximizing K rates for producers in the mid-southern United States that also consider crop value and fertilizer cost. Efficient methods for multigene transformation are important for developing novel crop varieties. Methods based on random integrations of multiple genes have been successfully used for metabolic engineering in plants. However, efficiency of co-integration and co-expression of the genes could present a bottleneck. Recombinase-mediated integration into the engineered target sites is arguably a more efficient method of targeted integration that leads to the generation of stable transgenic lines at a high rate. This method has the potential to streamline multigene transformation for metabolic engineering and trait stacking in plants. Manipulation of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] maturity group (MG) and planting date will increase the yield of a soybean crop while simultaneously influencing the potential soil-nitrogen (N) credits. Variations in N returned to the soil by soybean can significantly affect the amount of fertilizer-N needed for the subsequent crop. Four soybean MGs (3.5, 4.7, 5.4, and 5.6) were evaluated at optimal and late planting dates in Arkansas. Grain yield was significantly different among MGs in 2016 (P = .0012) and 2017 (P = .0004), with the 4.7 MG consistently yielding the highest at 3,232 kg ha(-1). Plant total aboveground …

Sensitive crop exposure to residual dicamba in irrigation is a potential hazard in regions with overlapping use of transgenic dicamba-resistant crops and on-farm water storage-tailwater recovery (OFWS-TWR) systems. This field study examined non-dicamba-resistant soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] for response to a dicamba dose gradient (7.6-630 g ae ha(-1)) in a furrow irrigation system. In a second study, growth stage and application timing effects were explored, with dicamba applied at 160 g ae ha(-1) in entirety to V3 or R1 soybean or split across exposure events. The Nitrogen-Soil Test for Rice (N-STaR) provides a site-specific N rate recommendation by quantifying alkaline hydrolyzable-N (AH-N). A user-friendly method for obtaining a representative N-STaR soil sample is needed, and this study was designed to evaluate the performance of alternative sampling techniques compared with the Dutch auger (DA). The alternative techniques included a Kleen Hole Spade dry (KHS-D), a KHS lubricated with water (KHS-W), a KHS lubricated with WD-40 (KHS-40), and the N-STaR Bucket and Drill (BD). The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) may provide insight into how conservation practices affect soil quality (SQ) regionally. Therefore, we aimed to quantify SQ in a long-term (15-yr) crop rotation and bio-covers experiment under no-tillage using SMAF. Main effects were cropping rotations of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], corn (Zea mays L.), and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). On-farm water storage–tailwater recovery systems reduce groundwater usage and intercept agrochemical loads, but pesticide residue dynamics in these systems are not well understood. This study monitored concentrations of seven herbicides in seven northeast Arkansas tailwater recovery systems (April 2017–March 2018). Clomazone, glyphosate, metolachlor, and quinclorac were frequently detected, with minimal detections of 2,4-D, dicamba, and propanil. Concentrations peaked during the growing season (1 Apr.–15 Sept.), reflecting an interaction of application and precipitation. Clomazone, glyphosate, and quinclorac concentrations were greater in ditches (−1, respectively) than in the associated reservoir (−1, respectively), but metolachlor concentrations were not different between structure types (maximum …

Confirmation of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)-resistant Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S.Watson) in 2015 limited weed control options for soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] producers. With already prevalent 5-enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase-, acetolactate synthase-, beta-tubulin-, and very-long-chain fatty acid-resistant Palmer amaranth, there are few remaining effective pre-emergence and postemergence herbicides labeled in soybean. The recent commercialization of soybean varieties resistant to dicamba and 2,4-D give producers effective options to control multiresistant Palmer amaranth. One experiment was conducted from 2015 to 2016 on a Calloway and Dewitt silt loam soil near Pine Tree (pH 8.3) and Stuttgart (pH 6.0), Arkansas, respectively. The objective was to evaluate the potential for a benzobicyclon application to carryover from rice and cause damage to corn, cotton, grain sorghum, soybean, and sunflower planted the subsequent year. No injury or stand reduction occurred for any crop after applications of benzobicyclon at 0.22 and 0.44 lb a.i. acre−1 at either location. Low-use-rate Zn fertilization methods have been developed and marketed for rice (Oryza sativa L.) fertilization with limited research validating their efficacy. Our research objectives were to evaluate the effect of Zn-seed treatment rate combined with six Zn-fertilization methods on early season canopy coverage, tissue-Zn concentration at the mid-tillering stage, and rice grain yield. The Phosphorus (P) Index risk assessment tool has been widely adopted across the United States to identify and rank site vulnerability to P runoff as part of the Natural Resources Conservation Service nutrient management planning (NMP) process. We evaluated the accuracy of a computerized particle analyzer (CPA) for high-throughput counting of Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) seeds and subsequently used the CPA to verify the accuracy of two subsampling methods for estimation of Palmer amaranth seed production. To determine accuracy of the CPA, 55 hand-counted samples, ranging from 500 to 5000 Palmer amaranth seeds, were drawn from field samples and counted with the CPA. The relationship between hand and CPA seed counts was described by a linear model (R-2 = 0.99) with a slope of 0.987 and a y-intercept of 3.49. Thus, very little discrepancy exists …

Transient expression of CRISPR/Cas9 is an effective approach for limiting its activities and improving its precision in genome editing. Here, we describe the heat-shock-inducible CRISPR/Cas9 for controlled genome editing, and demonstrate its efficiency in the model crop, rice. Using the soybean heat-shock protein gene promoter and the rice U3 promoter to express Cas9 and sgRNA, respectively, we developed the heat-shock (HS)-inducible CRISPR/Cas9 system, and tested its efficacy in targeted mutagenesis. Two loci were targeted in rice, and the presence of targeted mutations was determined before and after the HS treatment. Only a low rate of targeted mutagenesis was detected before …
