The Utah Intermountain Egg-Laying Contests were begun on November 1, 1924, and continued until October 23, 1931. Up until this time the interest in poultry-breeding for egg production in this intermountain section was extremely limited; furthermore, there were few flocks on which trap nest and pedigree breeding records were kept.
The primary object in conducting these contests was to stimulate an interest in the breeding of better poultry. It has frequently been observed by practical stockmen that alfalfa hay produced on poor unproductive land has a much lower feeding value than hay produced on good productive land. Some have also observed that by the use of a supplemental feed rich in phosphorus (such as steamed bone-meal), the feeding value of this poor quality alfalfa hay may be improved, indicating that phosphorus deficiency is at least one cause of its low feeding value.

The cherry is rapidly becoming Utah's most important fruit crop. According to the 1930 census, there were 110,050 bearing and 114,230 non-bearing cherry trees in Utah orchards. Most of these trees are sweet cherries, the newer plantings consisting mainly of Bing and Lambert trees, although Napoleon predominated in the older plantings.
The problem of pollination is of more importance with the cherry than with other- fruits, because of the large number of individual fruits required to make a crop and because of the self-sterility and intersterility shown by the major commercial sweet varieties.

The purpose of this investigation has been to determine the distribution and extent of injury of some of the more important jointworm flies attacking small grains. These obscure enemies exact a yearly toll by causing a subtle shrinkage in the weight and a decrease in quality of grain yields and, incidentally, a shrinkage in the profits derived from the farmer's labors, In general, jointworm flies may be controlled by simple, previously-known methods of improved farm practices, requiring no additional outlay in cash but a better timing and proper execution of good farm practices.

The purpose of the four seasons' study of maturity indexes of Elberta type peaches, made in Utah during the years 1926, 1928, 1929, and 1932 and presented in this publication, was to determine more accurately the best stage of maturity of peaches for distant shipment. This bulletin includes the results of Station Project 99-Fattening Lambs in Winter Drylot-which was begun at Monroe on November 15, 1928, and at Delta on November 13, 1929. The experiment was conducted for a period of four years at Monroe and for one year at Delta. Certain tracts of land in the West formerly used to produce grain and forage crops now produce only pasture grasses of comparatively low quality because of the water-logging and alkali accumulation which has occurred since irrigation was begun. Other tracts now producing only light crops of wild hay probably would produce profitable crops of alfalfa and clover, provided the water-table were lowered and the water-logged and alkaline condition of the soil removed. Still other areas are almost wholly nonproductive because of the concentration of excessive quantities of harmful alkali salts.

Wet beet pulp coming as a by-product from the sugar-beet industry in Utah is fed in varying amounts to dairy cows. Corn silage is also used to make up part of the dairy ration. Conflicting statements as to the value of the one feed as compared to the other indicated the need of more knowledge as to the value of pulp as compared to silage in the dairy ration. For this reason a study of the problem was initiated in February, 1926.

The Panguitch Experimental Livestock Farm is located three miles north of Panguitch, the county seat of Garfield County. Prior to 1909 it was held by the United States as an Indian school. In 1909 the United States Congress transferred title to the State of Utah. Two years later, in 1911 , the Utah Legislature decided that this property should "be used as an experiment station in connection with the Agricultural College of Utah ...", and control was vested in the Board of Trustees of the Utah State Agricultural College.

Little investigational work has been conducted on the effect of the hardness of curd of milk on the quality, quantity, and commercial value of cheese.
In July 1930, a preliminary report from the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station was made on these researches. This report indicated that for the manufacture of cheese hard-curd milk was far superior to soft-curd milk. This research is a continuation of that project.
Hard- and soft-curd milk used in the tests reported was obtained from Holstein cows. The fat content of each milk was practically the same. While the difference in curd hardness between the soft- …

Since that time many other factories have been built, and the growing of sugar-beets has become an important part of the agricultural program in many irrigated sections of this state. The present tendency in alfalfa improvement is to establish narrow types or strains for special purposes and which are adapted to a particular set of conditions. It was at one time thought that an alfalfa variety with numerous types of plants would have a wider range of adaptability to diverse conditions and that inter- crossing among the different plants would maintain the vigor of the variety.

Only within the last few years has the question of commercial fertilizers been worthy of serious consideration in Utah. It has been considered that commercial fertilizers were unnecessary in Utah (1) because arid soils retain their virgin fertility much longer than soils in the humid region which are subject to continual leaching by heavy precipitation, (2) because livestock have always predominated in Utah's agriculture due to the vast areas adapted only to range purposes and livestock means manure to maintain fertility, and (3) because alfalfa, our principal feed crop, is also one of the best plants for gathering nitrogen from …

The seriousness of Bang's abortion disease in Utah has made it necessary to promote more definite plans toward its control and eradication. The economic losses encountered are brought about not only through the loss of the calves but by the lessened milk production and lessened sale value of the animals themselves. Breeding efficiency is lower and such cows are more subject to udder infections. Many states now require that cattle shipped into them be negative to the abortion test; indications are that more states will adopt similar regulations. San Juan County, located in the southeast corner of the state, has a dry-farm area of approximately 600,000 acres extending from Monticello 26 miles south to Blanding and 6 miles north to Peter's Hill and stretching from the Blue Mountains east 30 miles to the Colorado line.
