Beginning in July, 1899, four months were spent in a thorough and detailed study of that portion of the Salt Lake Valley lying west of the Jordan River, the object being to map the soils with reference to their character and to the extent of, and damage from, "alkali" and seepage waters. The soils were classified according to their texture, and the waters examined with reference to their quality for irrigation purposes.
