The fruit industry in Utah is not large when compared with the total production of the United States. The year 1935 was a favorable fruit season for Utah and yet the state produced only 0.54 percent of the United States' apple crop, 1.30 percent of the peach crop, 0.31 percent of the pears, and 3.72 percent of all cherries. Utah does, however, produce between 10 and 15 percent of all sweet cherries. Sorghums are not grown to any appreciable extent in Utah except in the Virgin River valley in the southwestern portion of the State. No experimental work on sorghum culture had been done prior to 1931 except on the dry land of Juab County near Nephi. Those early tests, discontinued after 1917, indicated that sorghums were poorly adapted to such conditions.

Numerous improved varieties have been produced since that time, some of which are adapted to relatively short growing seasons.

This bulletin will discuss the practicability of growing some of these varieties of sorghum in Utah and their economic value compared …

Flax has been considered as a possible crop for growing under irrigation in Utah because of its high acre return in some of the northern States. One of the functions of a State experiment station is to test new crops and varieties. A series of experiments , therefore, has been conducted in Utah to determine the yields of flax as compared with small grains both under irrigation and on dry lands. This bulletin report s a summary of the results of these experiments together with a discussion of comparative returns from flax and small grains.

Range forage provides the foundation for the maintenance ration available for most sheep wintered in Utah. The nature and amount of supplemental concentrate or roughage needed with this forage to provide an adequate and efficient ration for sheep naturally depends on the nature and amount of range forage available. Present uncertainty as to the relative merits of the various available supplements originates largely through a lack of definite knowledge as to the composition and feeding value of the various range plants that go to make up the range-forage supply on the particular range in question.

A large portion of the agriculture of Utah, outside of the desert range areas, is characteristically heterogeneous rather than homogeneous in character. Marked differences in size of farm, in crops grown, in livestock kept, in yields, and in farm organization occur within short distances. This diversity is due in large measure to differences in soil, elevation, topography, and other physical features and to climatic characteristics such as amount, kind, and distribution of precipitation and length of growing season. All agricultural plants require carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, phosphorus, iron, and probably traces of other elements for their normal growth and fruition. The growth of farm crops is dependent upon an available supply of these elements, and the extent of growth is governed by the one present and available in least quantity in proportion to the plant's needs. Of the essential elements, all plants secure two (carbon and oxygen) from the air, one (hydrogen) from the water, and the others from the soil. Project 90-A Study of Factors Influencing the Financial Condition of Certain Utah Irrigation and Drainage Projects-was undertaken in 1928 as an intensified study of local areas. This study was divided among four departments, with a project leader for each particular phase of the study. These four project leaders, guided by the Station Director, have constituted a committee in immediate charge of this project. Subprojects and their respective leaders have been: A-Engineering and Engineering Economic Aspects, O. W. Israelsen; B-Soil Productivity Aspects, D. S. For a number of years it has been generally recognized that one of the most satisfactory methods of controlling Bang's disease in dairy cattle is to locate spreaders by means of the agglutination test and to eliminate them from the herd. The success of such a plan in relation to Utah dairy herds was not clearly understood because of the physical farm set-up peculiar to many communities in this state. The muck soil area in Sanpete County, where these investigations were conducted, comprises approximately 6500 acres, 4209 of which are included in the San Pitch Drainage District. This region is located in the south end of Sanpete Valley and west of the towns of Ephraim and Manti. During part of the year the lands involved were subject to overflow by the San Pitch River. Water covered most of the area early in the winter, and during the spring months high water kept it submerged until June. Carbon County is the greatest bituminous coal-producing district in the state and ranks as one of the largest and best in the Intermountain West. In 1934 there were twenty-six operating coal mines from which approximately 5,000,000 tons of coal were mined each year. These mines create work for hundreds of men. Many people in this section farm in the summer and mine during the winter months. The Delta Area, in which most of the alfalfa-seed investigations and crop studies reported in this bulletin were conducted, is located in Millard County which is in the west-central part of Utah. This area lies in the Sevier Desert, within the eastern boundary of the Great Basin in the northeastern part of the county.

In sugar-beet producing areas of the Intermountain West and Pacific Coast beet by-products constitute a most economical source of feed for fattening livestock.

In Utah there are available each year some 144,000 tons of wet beet pulp and some 20,000 tons of beet molasses; in addition, about 6500 tons of dried molasses beet pulp are available in the form of meal or pellets.

Practically all of this livestock feed supply, with a nutritive value equivalent to approximately 41,000 tons of corn or barley, has been fed, together with alfalfa hay, to cattle or sheep for maintenance or in the production …

The United States Census Report for 1930 shows that approximately 25 per cent of Utah farmers were growing oats at that time. Leading counties in oat production were Sanpete, Utah, Emery, Cache, and Weber, each of which produced over 100,000 bushels. Sanpete County produced over 200,000 bushels, whereas Boxelder, Sevier, Duchesne, and Salt Lake Counties produced slightly less than 100,000 bushels each.

In 1929 approximately one-fourth of the farmers of Utah were growing barley, with an average of 6.3 acres to the farm. Cache, Sanpete, Sevier, and Utah Counties each produced over 100,000 bushels. According to the United States Fifteenth Census Report (1930), Davis, Millard, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, and Weber Counties each produced from 40,000 to 70,000 bushels.

Wheat was one of the first crops grown by early Utah settlers. It has since occupied an important place in the agriculture of the state. While wheat is almost the only crop grown successfully on dry-lands, it is also important under irrigation. Thirty per cent of the wheat acreage of Utah in 1929 was spring-sown, which produced 44 per cent of the state's production. Eighty-seven per cent of the spring wheat acreage was grown under irrigation, this acreage producing 92.3 per cent of the total spring wheat crop. Relief, a new variety of hard red winter wheat resistant to most forms of covered smut occurring in Utah, was bred by the Department of Agronomy, Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Bunt is a serious disease of wheat found in nearly all weat-growing countries of the world. In India the disease is more severe in the northern provinces than in the central and southern provinces as the temperature during planting time is favorable to the germination of the fungous growth in the northern part. It has been advocated by many sheep raisers and individuals interested in the wool industry of Utah, that wool manufacturing should become a leading industry of this state. Factors which seemingly corroborate such contentions are readily apparent. Utah's annual wool clip ranges between eighteen and twenty-five million pounds of wool.(1)*. Practically all of the 85,000 hogs on the farms of Utah (as of August 1, 1934) are in the irrigated sections of the state where they fit in well with dairying. Utah, however, is a hog-deficient area and produces about 109,000 hogs less than are slaughtered in the state for its own use. Large amounts of milk by-products such as skim milk, buttermilk, and whey are produced in Utah.
