The Effects Of The Myokinesthetic System On Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome In The Physically Active: A Case Study, Rodrigo E. Martinez, Evelyn Benitez-Lopez, Lindsey Larkins
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) is a common pathology in physically active people and one of many overuse leg injuries present in weight bearing athletes, with the highest prevalence in runners. Researchers have extensively explored treatment for MTSS, but a long-lasting and effective treatment option has not been established. This case report aimed to explore the effects of The MyoKinesthetic SystemTM (MYK), a form of manual therapy, on two athletes diagnosed with MTSS. Patient one is a 19-year-old male rugby player with a previous history of MTSS, who reported leg pain while running which progressed to constant pain. Patient two …

Exogenous Fluid Delivery Schedule And Composition On Fluid Balance, Physiologic Strain, And Substrate Use In The Heat, Alejandro M. Rosales
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Introduction: Wildfire suppression is characterized by high total energy expenditures and water turnover rates. Hydration position stands outline hourly fluid intake rates. However, dose interval remains ambiguous. We aimed to determine the effects of micro- and bolus-dosing water (MW, BW) or carbohydrate-electrolyte (MCE, BCE) solutions on fluid balance, heat stress, and carbohydrate oxidation during extended thermal exercise. Methods: Males (n=12), in a repeated measures cross-over design, completed 4, 120-minute treadmill trials (1.3 m.s-1, 5% grade, 33°C, 30%RH) wearing a USFS uniform and 15kg pack. Fluid delivery approximated losses calculated from a pre-experiment familiarization …

Effect Of Unaccustomed Eccentric Exercise On Motor Unit Firing Characteristics And The Contralateral Repeated Bout Effect: A Pilot Study, Nicholas Coker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Introduction: Eccentric exercise elicits considerable muscle damage. If a bout of unilateral eccentric exercise is repeated on the ipsilateral or contralateral limb, a repeated bout effect (RBE) may be observed where muscle damage is attenuated. Purpose: To examine whether a RBE exists following repeated bouts of damaging eccentric exercise in the ipsilateral and contralateral limbs, and assess changes to motor unit firing characteristics in both limbs following recovery from an initial bout. Methods: Sixteen untrained men were randomized into exercise (EX) or control (CON) groups. EX performed eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors on the dominant (ipsilateral) limb and repeated …

Predictors Of Work Economy In Structural Firefighters, Maxwell Steele Norris
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
The purpose of this study was to investigate a novel work economy metric to quantify firefighter physical ability and identify physical fitness and anthropometric correlates of work economy. Physical fitness and anthropometric measurements were taken on 19 incumbent structural firefighters (Age: 35.0±7.1 yr, Body mass: 87.5±13.1 kg). Firefighters performed a timed maximal effort simulated fireground test (SFGT) in personal protective equipment. SFGT air depletion was represented by change in cylinder pressure. Work economy was quantified as: (1/(SFGT completion time x air depletion))x104. Bivariate and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify anthropometric and physical fitness predictors of …

Acute Physiological Responses To Arm-Cranking With Blood Flow Restriction, Benjamin Cockfield
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Physiological responses to aerobic blood flow restriction exercise (BFR) are well documented for lower-body exercise but not upper-body exercise. I evaluated cardiorespiratory (heart rate, VO2, RER, ventilation), metabolic (tissue saturation, deoxyhemoglobin concentrations), and perceptual (effort, pain) responses to arm cranking with BFR at varying arterial occlusion pressures (AOP). Ten adults performed 4 intermittent arm cranking protocols (6x2-min, 1-min recovery): 1) low load (LL) – 40%VO2peak and 0% AOP; high load (HL) – 80%VO2peak and 0% AOP; (BFR50) – 40%VO2peak with 50% AOP; (BFR70) – 40%VO2peak with 70% AOP. Heart rate, RER, and ventilation, were higher with BFR compared to LL …
The Immunological Response To Chronic Stress In Obese Mice, Matthew Corey Parsley
The Immunological Response To Chronic Stress In Obese Mice, Matthew Corey Parsley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Obesity and psychological stress are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and have a positive correlation with vascular dysfunction. This functional deficit has been linked to a pro-inflammatory milieu, exacerbated by an upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Febuxostat, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, has been shown to rescue vascular impairment in these models. The purpose of this study was to examine the individual and combined effects of obesity and chronic stress on neuroimmune cell populations, and assess if febuxostat is able mediate immune alterations.
Male mice (n=48) were assigned into either normal chow (lean) and high-fat diet (obese) groups. The lean animals …

An Evidence-To-Practice Review On The Efficacy Of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, Matthew G. Moore, Aneika R. Daley, Zachary Winkelmann
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is the use of specially designed instruments that provide a mobilizing effect to soft tissue to help with decreasing pain and improving range of motion. Over the years, there has been an increase in the use of IASTM as well as an increase in research for its effects on soft-tissue injuries, range of motion (ROM), and pain management; however, the results have not been supported as a whole. Evidence for the positive outcomes from the use of IASTM, in conjunction with therapeutic exercise or other interventions, has been lacking in many studies. As a …
