Autophagy And Its Potential Role In Stress And Feed Efficiency Using Avian Lines, Alissa Laura Piekarski
Autophagy And Its Potential Role In Stress And Feed Efficiency Using Avian Lines, Alissa Laura Piekarski
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Autophagy is a highly conserved cellular mechanism that is responsible for the degradation and recycling of damaged organelles. Recently, autophagy has been involved in critical roles during overall development of the organism and degradation of damaged cellular components. This pathway has witnessed dramatic growth in the last few years and has been extensively studied in yeast and mammals, however, there is a paucity of information in avian (non-mammalian) species. First, we characterized genes involved in the autophagy pathway in male and female Jungle Fowl to determine gender and tissue specific differences. Secondly, tissue and genotype differences in Japanese quail selected …

Functional Significance Of Gill Claudin Proteins In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Osmoregulation, Joanna Katarzyna Bujak
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Claudin proteins, a key element of tight junction complexes, are known to control paracellular permeability. In euryhaline fish, changes in claudin abundance and localization are critical during salinity acclimation. In seawater, a leaky paracellular pathway that facilitates sodium extrusion is hypothesized to be controlled by claudin proteins. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of Claudin-10c, -10d -10e and Claudin-30 in gill function in freshwater (FW) and seawater (SW) rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). I examined mRNA and protein abundance along with cellular localization. A tissue distribution survey showed that all of the claudins studied were predominantly expressed …

Functional Characterization Of The Arginine Vasotocin 4 Receptor (Vt4r) In Sensory Circumventricular Organs Of The Chicken Gallus Gallus, Nguiessan Alphonse Aman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Past studies have shown that the avian vasotocin 4 receptor (VT4R), homologous to the mammalian arginine vasopressin receptor 1a (V1aR/AVPR1A) is involved in immobilization stress. It was not known, however, whether the receptor is also associated with osmotic stress, and if so, what brain regions may be involved. Four treatment groups of chicks were used for the study. One group was subjected to 1h immobilization stress and two groups were administered intraperitoneal injection of 3 M NaCl or 0.15 M NaCl. One additional group served as controls. After 1 h, blood samples were taken for the determination of plasma levels …

The Effect Of Leucine Supplementation On Biomarkers Of Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Protein Synthesis In Soleus Muscle Of Rats Fed A High-Fat Diet, Gina Davis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a contributing factor to the advancement of various diseases including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Impairment in mitochondria brings about a diminished mitochondrial number and oxidative capacity. Leucine is known to stimulate muscle protein synthesis through transcription and translation of nuclear DNA leading to increases in mitochondrial biogenesis and fatty acid oxidation. However, the effects of leucine on anabolic factors of the mitochondrial genome, during catabolic conditions are not known. PURPOSE: To determine if leucine supplementation alters the negative effects of a high fat (60%) diet (HFD) on the mitochondrial genome by measuring the gene expression of …

Systematics Of Protosteloid Amoebae, Lora Lindley Shadwick
Systematics Of Protosteloid Amoebae, Lora Lindley Shadwick
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Because of their simple fruiting bodies consisting of one to a few spores atop a finely tapering stalk, protosteloid amoebae, previously called protostelids, were thought of as primitive members of the Eumycetozoa sensu Olive 1975. The studies presented here have precipitated a change in the way protosteloid amoebae are perceived in two ways: (1) by expanding their known habitat range and (2) by forcing us to think of them as amoebae that occasionally form fruiting bodies rather than as primitive fungus-like organisms. Prior to this work protosteloid amoebae were thought of as terrestrial organisms. Collection of substrates from aquatic habitats …

Detection Of Inositol Polyphosphates By Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (Page) Under Apoptotic Conditions In Cultured Sw480 Cells, M. K. Zafar, R. Mohsin, S. Hassen, R. Agarwal, H. Mumtaz, N. Ali
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Inositol phosphates are naturally occurring compounds that regulate diverse cellular processes including apoptosis. Apoptosis is a mechanism by which cells undergo natural death to maintain cellular homeostasis. It causes cell death in areas during a state that is harmful to the body. It also regulates cellular development. Previous work has shown that exogenously administered, as well as endogenously manipulated inositol phosphates bring about apoptotic changes. It has been demonstrated that cellular levels of inositol phosphates, particularly higher inositol phosphates such as inositol hexakis-phosphate (IP6) and diphosphoinositol pentakis-phosphate (IP7) levels increase during apoptotic conditions. In this study, we have attempted to …

Physiological Studies Of Heat Stress Acclimation During A Specific Exercise Regimen, Leland F. Morgans, Alan M. Johnson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Eleven subjects were used to determine if the exercise regimen of racquetball could be used as a heat stress acclimator. Core temperature, skin temperature, sweat production, and weight loss were recorded during a racquetball match. Skin and core temperatures were determined by using thermistors. Sweat was collected with modified stress electrodes. Weight loss was recorded by comparing nude weights at the beginning and end of a match. The results indicated that an hour of strenuous racquetball play caused a significant increase in core temperature with subsequent sweating which resulted in a significant decrease in skin temperature and weight loss. The …
