Two techniques commonly used on human magnetic resonance spectroscopy systems to obtain spectra from localized volumes in the brain are point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) and stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM) spectroscopy. PRESS gives a signal twice as large as that obtained with STEAM, but suffers from longer minimum echo times. While STEAM must be used to detect species with short spin-spin relaxation times, PRESS can be used for species with longer relaxation times to give a spectrum with a better signal to noise ratio. Only STEAM was provided for the GE Omega 4.7 T small animal imager used in this …

Multisite Microprobes For Electrochemical Recordings In Biological Dynamics, G. Sreenivas, S. S. Ang, R. M. Ranade, A. S. Salian, W. D. Brown
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
For over 30 years, techniques have been developed that allow for the microscale (10-30 /mum) measurement of chemical signals with high temporal resolution (1-200 Hz). Such measurements, called in vivo electrochemical recordings, allow for the direct determination of neurotransmitter molecules and related compounds in biological systems. Multiple recordings, simultaneously performed at different, closely spaced, well defined locations throughout a three-dimensional tissue volume in the brain, are of interest in neuroscience. Developments in microelectronic techniques enable the fabrication of multi-electrode microprobes for recording extracellular action potentials generated by individual neurons simultaneously. A high-yield microfabrication process has been successfully developed for the …
Sensory Modulation Of Juvenile Play In Rats, Stephen M. Siviy, Jaak Panksepp
Sensory Modulation Of Juvenile Play In Rats, Stephen M. Siviy, Jaak Panksepp
Psychology Faculty Publications
A series of experiments was conducted to determine the extent to which somatosensory stimulation is necessary for the elaboration of juvenile play in rats. Anesthetization of the dorsal body surface of juvenile rats with xylocaine reduced the frequency of pinning, an indicator variable for play, by 35% to 70%, while motivation to play, measured by dorsal contacts, an index of play solicitation, remained largely intact. These data suggest that dorsal body surface anesthetization impairs the ability of juvenile rats to perceive and/or respond to playful gestures. When untreated animals were paired with xylocaine-treated animals, the xylocaine-treated animals consistently pinned the …
Critical Flicker Frequency In A Harp Seal, Pagophilus Groenlandicus (Erxleben, 1777), Charles D. Bernholz
Critical Flicker Frequency In A Harp Seal, Pagophilus Groenlandicus (Erxleben, 1777), Charles D. Bernholz
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Critical flicker frequency (CFF) in a free-swimming harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) was investigated using behavioral techniques. The resulting CFF versus intensity contour indicates a definite rod-cone break, confirming a duplex photoreceptor population whose presence had not been observed in previous morphological reports.

Molecular Transfer Of Acquired Discrimination By Proteinaceous Extract, Robert L. Sayre
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Early investigators of the molecular basis of memory suggested a unique function for the nucleic acids in learning and memory, with base changes in RNA being the most popular mechanism in representing memory for experiential events. Subsequent research has led to the hypothesis that RNA is intermediary in the general action of cells, but some researchers continue to think of RNA as providing a unique contribution during learning.
Laboratory Applications Of Present Day Knowledge Of The Hormone Of The Anterior Lobe Of The Pituitary Gland, Herman F. Geske
Laboratory Applications Of Present Day Knowledge Of The Hormone Of The Anterior Lobe Of The Pituitary Gland, Herman F. Geske
Bachelors’ Theses
The history of a pregnancy diagnosis is an old one. In the report of Dr. S. Ashheim is a note which bears this out. The women of ancient Egypt used a rather crude method. Whether it was an efficient test the records do not state. Considering the fact that pregnancy and germination and growth are correlative, these women of the Nile probably were not so far wrong theoretically, whatever the practical results may have been. Their method was to put barley and wheat grains in a pot. These grains were wettened with urine from a woman who thought herself pregnant.
