CRAYFISH PLAGUE IS A MAJOR DISEASE AFFECTING FRESHWATER CRAYFISH IN SOME AREAS OF THE WORLD. THE DISEASE HAS NEVER BEEN REPORTED IN AUSTRALIA. THE SIMULATION EXERCISE THAT WAS UNDERTAKEN AS PART OF THIS PROJECT WAS A RESPONSE TO A FICTITIOUS OUTBREAK OF CRAYFISH PLAGUE.
Funding for this project was provided to enable an exercise simulating an outbreak of crayfish plague to be conducted in Western Australia. Crayfish plague is a fungal disease (Aphanomyces astaci) that has devastated some freshwater crayfish populations in Europe but has never been recorded in Australia. The exercise was planned arounda fictitious outbreak of crayfish plague …

An Economic Analysis Of The Threat Of An Exotic Disease On Agriculture: The Case Of Sheep Pox In Western Australia, Nhu Che, Tom Kompas
Biosecurity published reports
Sheep pox is an acute disease that causes heavy losses due to high sheep mortality, costly eradication programs and ongoing problems with trade restrictions for many countries around the world. Australia until now has been unaffected, and although the risk of disease entry may be very slight, one case of sheep pox outbreak could cost the Western Australian economy as much as $50 million in damages, mostly from the trade disruption losses ( over the 21-month period of trading bans). The introduction of a Serology Test Program may reduce that amount by $35 million due to a shortening of the …

Communities Of Cloacal Bacteria In Tree Swallow Families, Michael P. Lombardo, Patrick A. Thorpe, R. Cichewicz, M. Henshaw, C. Millard, C. Steen, T. K. Zeller
Peer Reviewed Publications
Our aim in this study was to survey the communities of bacteria found in the cloacae of adult and nestling Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), determine if there were familial patterns of prevalence, and determine if there were relationships between bacteria loads and nestling size when 12 days old and fledging success.
Lupinosis, M R. Gardiner
Lupinosis, M R. Gardiner
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In spite of many years of intensive investigation lupinosis remains a remarkably complex and baffling problem. Current research is throwing new light on the disease and it is now much better understood— although far from beaten.
Lupinosis research is co-ordinated by the Department of Agriculture's Lupinosis Committee, on which are represented all groups working on the disease. These include veterinary surgeons and pathologists, chemists, plant pathologists and animal husbandry specialists.
Chairman of the Committee is Dr M. R. Gardiner, Chief of the Department's Animal Division and a veteran of lupinosis research.
In this article Dr Gardiner summarises the current state …

Back Flushing On Milking Machine Teat Cups, G W R Scott, K. Needham
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE possibility of replacing the dipping of teat cups between cows with a system of back flushing with water has been investigated for some time by different workers.
