By infection of the non-lysogenic strain of S. potsdam, SP2, with the phages P9a/2 and P9/c three artificially lysogenized strains were isolated: SP2-9a, SP2-9c, and SP2-9ca. SP2 lysogenized with P9a could not further be lysogenized with P9c.
There was evidence from the induction data that the presence of P9c influenced the induction of phage P9a, although P9a did not appear to influence the induction of P9c. Much greater levels of free phage P9a were achieved in induced cultures of SP2-9ca than in induced cultures of SP2-9a.

Three lysogenic strains of Salmonella potsdam were studied to determine whether or not they were inducible by ultraviolet light under certain conditions. The strains examined were SP3, SP4, and SP9. SP3 and SP4 contained a single prophage each and SP9 contained two prophages P9a and P9c. The ultraviolet light sensitivities of each of these lysogenic strains and the indicator strain SP2 were also examined.
All three lysogenic strains were found to be inducible. SP3 was induced an average of 3.59% and SP4 an average of 2.21%. The difference between the induction percentages of SP3 and SP4 was not statistically significant. …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Streptococcal Antibodies By A Serum Inhibition Fluorescent Antibody Tube Method, Charles Glenn Nichols

The development and description of a quantitative method of evaluating streptococcal antibodies by inhibition of fluorescent staining is reported. Suspensions of Streptococcus pyogenes group A, treated with methyl alcohol to reduce auto-fluorescence, were used as antigen. The degree of inhibition of uptake of fluorescent labeled antibody produced by the presence of antibodies in the immune test sera was measured after elution of the labeled antibody. Comparisons were made with controls using normal sera containing no inhibiting antibodies. A method of reporting the results in terms of titer is described.

Because pathogens such as streptococcus and staphylococcus have been transferred in many hospitals, the source of the infections is of concern to doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel. As shown by the review of literature, good techniques are necessary to stop the spread of disease.
It was the purpose of this study to investigate one facet of patient safety by: (1) the culture of thermometers ready for use in three selected hospitals; (2) to determine the effectiveness of the Group, Individual, and Central Supply methods of disinfection currently practiced in the three selected hospitals.
