A series of experiments involving Listeria monocytogenes was undertaken to study first the fecal shedding of Listeria by conventional mice challenged intraperitoneally with Listeria and second the fecal shedding and ability to survive of germ free mice with similar challenge. In addition, mites infesting Listeria infected mice were cultured for their possible contamination by Listeria.
Conventional mice were challenged intraperitoneally with a single near LD50 dose of Listeria. Fecal Listeria were detected by collecting specimens from each mouse daily for the first 4 days and every second day thereafter. The feces was held at 7°C for 14 …

A taxonomic study of the subfamily Triatominae was conducted to determine systematic relationships using agar gel diffusion methods in the differentiation of ova antigens and electrophoresis to differentiate hernolymph proteins.
Agar gel diffusion methods indicated that two distinctive Triatominae species from South America could be distinguished from typical North American species; it was also possible to distinguish the monotypic genus Dipetalogaster from other North American populations.
A total of 180 electrophoretic tracings of Triatominae hernolyrnph were made from 18 populations of kissing bugs. Closely related populations of the Triatoma Protracta, Triatoma Rubida, and Paratriatoma Hirsuta Complexes showed group relationships within …

By infection of the non-lysogenic strain of S. potsdam, SP2, with the phages P9a/2 and P9/c three artificially lysogenized strains were isolated: SP2-9a, SP2-9c, and SP2-9ca. SP2 lysogenized with P9a could not further be lysogenized with P9c.
There was evidence from the induction data that the presence of P9c influenced the induction of phage P9a, although P9a did not appear to influence the induction of P9c. Much greater levels of free phage P9a were achieved in induced cultures of SP2-9ca than in induced cultures of SP2-9a.
There were marked differences in induction of both phages P9a and P9c between …

An investigation into the environmental and ethological factors relating to summer flights of Triatoma protracta protracta (Uhler) was performed utilizing black light traps of original design. Field observations were conducted on 51 evenings during the period June 1 to October 31, 1964. The traps were operated on a surveillance basis for the remainder of a twelve month period.
A total of 398 adult Triatoma protracta were collected in traps around a residence located in the chaparral covered foothills 10 miles east of Redlands, California. In addition to observations on field behavior, laboratory dissections were performed on each bug to obtain …

Three lysogenic strains of Salmonella potsdam were studied to determine whether or not they were inducible by ultraviolet light under certain conditions. The strains examined were SP3, SP4, and SP9. SP3 and SP4 contained a single prophage each and SP9 contained two prophages P9a and P9c. The ultraviolet light sensitivities of each of these lysogenic strains and the indicator strain SP2 were also examined.
All three lysogenic strains were found to be inducible. SP3 was induced an average of 3.59% and SP4 an average of 2.21%. The difference between the induction percentages of SP3 and SP4 was not statistically significant. …

The purpose of the study was to find out if isolation carts were serving as a means of cross infection. Literature pertaining to sources of possible contamination on hospital units written in the past five years were reviewed.
Using the descriptive survey as the method of study, effort was made to find out if isolation carts were a means of cross infection on the hospital unit. Two laboratory cultures were obtained from both door pulls on all isolation carts used by nursing units. This was done over a three month period from December 12, 1963 to March 11, 1964. The …

The phages isolated from different lysogenic strains of Salmonella may be divided into different groups on the basis of their heat resistance. In Group A are phages resistant to a temperature of 80°C and in Group B phages that are killed at this temperature. Three temperate bacteriophages P3/2, P4/2 and P9a/2 isolated from lysogenic strains of S. potsdam were investigated. Phage P4/2 is in Group A and phages P3/2 and P9a/2 in Group B.

Three hundred Swiss Webster albino mice three weeks of age were placed on low (8%), medium (24%), high (48%) protein levels and a commercial laboratory animal feed, Purina Chow for various lengths of time: (1) simultaneously with infection, and four weeks thereafter, (2) three weeks before infection and throughout the four-week infection period, and (3) six weeks prior to infection and during the infection period. The bactericidal antibody test depends on the presence of sufficient complement, magnesium ions, and specific antibody to produce killing of certain gram negative bacilli. This study was undertaken to demonstrate whether or not Salmonella pullorum is an organism which is susceptible to this killing action.
Different amounts of test serum containing antibody, constant amounts of complement and magnesium saline diluent were placed together and held in a 37°C water bath for a one hour reaction time. In four separate experiments mouse embryo cell monolayers infected with polyoma virus and uninfected control mouse embryo cells were maintained in Eagle’s Minimum Essential Medium for periods of time ranging from 0 to 168 hours. The cell layers were removed from the glass by trypsinization. Samples of the cells were counted in a Coulter Counter and the remainder of the cells frozen after centrifugation, in a button. The development and description of a quantitative method of evaluating streptococcal antibodies by inhibition of fluorescent staining is reported. Suspensions of Streptococcus pyogenes group A, treated with methyl alcohol to reduce auto-fluorescence, were used as antigen. The degree of inhibition of uptake of fluorescent labeled antibody produced by the presence of antibodies in the immune test sera was measured after elution of the labeled antibody. Comparisons were made with controls using normal sera containing no inhibiting antibodies. A method of reporting the results in terms of titer is described.

In comparing the growth of polyoma virus in secondary cell cultures of a mouse lymphoma (P388D1, a known polyoma-supporting strain) and normal mouse fibroblasts (Earle’s L cells), the following observations have been made.
The L cell is capable of supporting the growth of the polyoma virus with reproduction and release of infectious particles. Viruses appear in the fluid from time to time over a period of several weeks. This probably represents a carrier state of the virus in L cells. Many of the L cells in infected cultures are not killed by the virus infection.

Various factors—embryology, host associations, and seasonal changes In eye worn populations—tending to promote the propagation of T. califomlensls were studied.
The early embryology closely parallels that of other nematode species.
The mature embryos remain alive in saline at 35°C as long as 5 days. Dead embryos can be distinguished from living ones by virtue of the rapid staining by methylene blue by the former. Parturient female thelazias release embryos into saline, and embryos are found regularly in tear secretions of infected laboratory rabbits.

The purpose of this work was to determine the extent and effects of infestation of the eye worm of mammals, Thelazia californiensis, and to elucidate through experimentation or observation the mode of transmission.
A survey of literature revealed that thelaziasie (infestation by Thelazia species) may cause serious pathological changes in the eye and its adnexa, sometimes resulting in blindness. It was found that reports of thelaziasis in the United States were (with two exceptions) of cases in California. It was further found that T. californiensis has been reported in a wider variety of host than has any of other …
