The objectives of this study were: 1. To experimentally reproduce rotaviral diarrhea in gnotobiotic pigs. 2. To determine the appearance of the normal intestine by scanning electron and light microscopy. 3. To compare by scanning electron and light microscopy the appearance of segments from different areas of intestine and to determine the development, location, and severity of rotaviral lesions in gnotobiotic pigs.

Biological nitrogen fixation, a means of alleviating our increasing dependence on synthesized nitrogen fertilizers, is being studied with renewed interest. Production of nitrogen fertilizer requires large amounts of natural gas and other non-renewable energy sources, while the energy for biological nitrogen fixation is derived either directly or indirectly from photosynthesis. With only limited supplies of natural gas and an increasing population, and thus increasing demand for food, the advantages and even necessity of understanding and enhancing biological nitrogen is obvious. Anaerobic non spore forming bacteria are not detected in routine food examinations, and their occurrences in foods has seldom been reported in the literature. The purpose of this study is to determine the occurrence of non-spore forming anaerobes, the identification of the isolates found, and the possible growth and multiplication in foods which might contribute to spoilage or food illness.

Bovine parvovirus has been shown to produce calf scours (40). Although exact figures are unavailable, a sizeable economic loss is suffered annually by South Dakotans as a result of this disease. Bovine parvovirus has been isolated in South Dakota (7). However, the extent of exposure to the virus is unknown. The object of this study is to characterize the South Dakota parvovirus isolate and determine by serological methods the extent of exposure in cattle. A preliminary study to determine the ability of parvovirus to cause abortion in cattle will also be undertaken.

This study, then, was undertaken to develop a universal, in vitro, extracellular method utilizing fluorescence and radioactive 125I to rapidly detect, identify, and quantitate pathogenic viruses and viral antibodies. Focus of the study is the CLAM model, which consists of inert latex particles, plus four radioactively labeled components: antibody, virus, enzyme (RNase) and fluorochrome (FITC).
