Contributions To The Reproductive Biology And Natural History Of The Pirateperch, Aphredoderus Sayanus, Edward O. Murdy Jul 1977

Contributions To The Reproductive Biology And Natural History Of The Pirateperch, Aphredoderus Sayanus, Edward O. Murdy

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the micro and macro-anatomy of the reproductive system and the testicular and ovarian development in Aphredoderus sayanus.

Specimens were collected at least once a month from September, 1976, through May, 1977, in Cypress Pond, a part of the Dismal Swamp drainage, outside of Suffolk, Virginia. Forty-three specimens had their gonads examined histologically, of these 13 were males, 29 were females and in one specimen the sex was not determinable.

Aphredoderus sayanus is a spring spawner, spent gonads were found on and after April 13, 1977. Gonads began to ripen in the …

Fisheries Report No 20 - Trawl Caught Fish And Crustaceans From Cockburn Sound, J. W. Penn Jan 1977

Fisheries Report No 20 - Trawl Caught Fish And Crustaceans From Cockburn Sound, J. W. Penn

Fisheries Research Reports

Cockburn Sound is one of the few sheltered embayments near the Perth metropolitan area and as such has been subjected to increasing usage by both the general public and industry. Historically the Sound has been a major commercial fishing area from which much of the fresh fish for the metropolitan area has been caught. More recently, as well as providing a significant commercial catch, a major sport fishery has developed in the area.

The first commercial trawling operations in Cockburn Sound were undertaken in the early part of this century when horses were used to tow small nets on the …

Fishes Rarely Caught In Shrimp Trawl, Charles Burns Jan 1970

Fishes Rarely Caught In Shrimp Trawl, Charles Burns

Gulf and Caribbean Research

During a three year study made of the offshore waters of Mississippi the author became interested in the fishes "rarely caught" in shrimp trawls. This report concerns all data for the project, which was carried out during 1967, 1968 and 1969. The only characteristic common to the following species is the rarity with which they are taken in regular shrimp trawling operations. Some are by no means rare in terms of total number available in the Gulf of Mexico, but it is worthwhile to report data collected as compared to others taken thirty-nine to forty-one years ago in nearby Louisiana. …

Habits Of Juvenile Fishes In Two Rhode Island Estuaries, Mohammed Saeed Mulkana Jan 1966

Habits Of Juvenile Fishes In Two Rhode Island Estuaries, Mohammed Saeed Mulkana

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The basic purpose of this work was to gain information on the possible role of some Rhode Island estuaries as nursery grounds for young migrant and resident species of fishes.

The areas selected were, the lower Pettaquamscutt River and the lower Point Judith Pond, both in the town of Narragansett, Rhode Island. The seining operations were carried through summer and early fall of 1962 when these estuaries are heavily used as nursery grounds. Major features of the occurrence, abundance and distribution of young fishes were deduced by examining samples from seine hauls. Thirty-six species were recorded from the lower river …

Some Digenetic Trematodes From Deep-Water Fish Of Tortugas, Florida, Harold W. Manter Jan 1934

Some Digenetic Trematodes From Deep-Water Fish Of Tortugas, Florida, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Introduction (first two paragraphs)

The parasitic fauna of ocean depths is practically unknown. Although an extensive fish population occurs at all depths, very little study has yet been made on the helminths of these fish. During the summers of 1930, 1931, and 1932 excellent opportunity was offered for the collection of parasites from fish trawled from depths varying from 40 to 582 fathoms at Tortugas, Florida. A considerable number of systematic hauls by the staff and crew of the Tortugas Biological Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington yielded an abundance and considerable variety of fish, some of rare forms, …
