In the Northern Adriatic Sea, extracellular enzymatic activity was measured during a Lagrangian study following a drifting buoy for 40 h. Dissolved free enzymatic activity represented 20 to 70% of total activity depending on the type of enzyme. alpha- and beta-glucosidases exhibited a significantly higher free activity than proteolytic enzymes. In subsequent laboratory experiments we investigated the effect of zooplankton on the free enzyme pool. The 4-step approach included: (1) determination of the enzymatic activities in copepods (mainly Acartia clausi); (2) enzymatic activity in fecal pellets; (3) short- and long-term grazing experiments; and (4) degradability of free glucosidase in seawater. …

There is growing evidence that postlarvae (megalopae) of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus can slow the progression through the molt cycle while in offshore nursery grounds, and delay metamorphosis until reinvasion of coastal habitat occurs. However, the cues that trigger metamorphosis of megalopae are not well known. This study tested the hypothesis that the time to metamorphosis (TTM) from the postlarval megalops stage to the first crab stage is shortened in the presence of 2 potential macroalgal settlement substrates, Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), and Gracilaria spp. (Rhodophyta). Species of Anophryocephalus are host-specific parasites of pinnipeds in the Holarctic. Phylogenetic analysis of 7 species postulates A. anophrys as the basal taxon and A. inuitorum as basal to A. skrjabini; A. arcticensis is basal to A. nunivakensis and A. eumetopii + A. ochotensis (single tree; consistency index = 74.4%; homoplasy slope ratio = 36.45%). Evaluation of host and geographic distributions postulates ringed seals of the Atlantic-Arctic as ancestral hosts, and the Arctic basin as a paraphyletic area with respect to the North Pacific. Cospeciation within this assemblage was dependent on intense isolation of small effective populations of definitive hosts …

Anophryocephalus inuitorum sp. nov. and A. arcticensis sp. nov. are described from ringed seals (Phoca hispida hispida) in the eastern Canadian Arctic; the latter species is also reported from harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Anophryocephalus inuitorum is most similar to A. skrjabini, but can be distinguished by fewer testes (14-27) and smaller dimensions of the strobila, neck (3.0-5.9 mm long), and cirrus sac (31-70 μm long), diameter of the genital atrium (44 -68 pm), and length of the male canal (23-42 μm long). Anophyrocephulus arcticensis resembles A. nunivakensis in the …

A survey was made of the coral reefs of Kuwait to compile a species list of scleractinian corals. Twenty-eight hermatypic and six ahermatypic coral species are listed in systematic order, and a brief description is provided for each. A new species of Acropora is described. The Kuwait fauna is a small subset of the over 500 Indo-Pacific species. Several species show a higher degree of intraspecific variation than they exhibit in other locations. A range extension is reported for Acanthastrea maxima Sheppard & Salm, previously recorded from Oman (north and south coasts). A common species in the Arabian Gulf, Porites …

The failures of past restrictions on fishing effort to fully halt the decline of the breeding stock led to the formation of a sub-committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee. The prime objective of the sub-committee is to evaluate effective long term strategies for managing the fishery so that breeding stock is maintained at an adequate level despite the inevitable increases in catching efficiency. The composition and seasonal abundance patterns for phytoplankton in the Pagan River, Virginia, were determined. This river is characterized as a nutrient enriched system with annual mean levels of total nitrogen and phosphorus at 1.8 and 0.8 mg/I respectively. Three phytoplankton maxima occurred during the year with the highest in fall, followed by summer and spring peaks. A diatom flora was dominant throughout the year at concentrations of 107 to 108 cells/I. Other algal populations exhibited distinct periods of abundance, which seasonally varied in magnitude and time of development. Turbidity levels were high throughout the year, with a mean secchi …

The effects of organic enrichment on benthic community structure were evaluated in a field study conducted in Pocomoke Sound in the vicinity of a seafood processing plant. The empirically derived Species Abundance and Biomass (SAB) curves of Pearson and Rosenberg (1978) were used to model patterns of organic enrichment at the study site, called Pig Point, as well as two reference sites located within Pocomoke Sound. Analyses of particulate material collected by sediment traps moored at a location in the northern Adriatic Sea in 1991 revealed the presence of zooplankton fatty acids, even though zooplankton and other 'swimmers' killed by the trap's preservative were carefully removed. Laboratory experiments were conducted to (1) prove the existence of zooplankton lipids within fecal pellets, (2) exclude the possibility of incomplete separation of swimmers and other material as eventual contamination with polyunsaturated fatty acids in fecal pellets, (3) evaluate the importance of zooplankton lipids to mass flux and (4) reveal the mechanisms which lead to excretion of undigested organic matter, …

A bloom of the dinoflagellate Ptychodiscus brevis occurred off the North Carolina coast in late 1987, and samples were forwarded by NOAA to the Old Dominion University Phytoplankton Laboratory for total phytoplankton analysis. Six sampling stations were chosen to represent different bloom scenarios and these six were clustered into three site groups based on the concentrations of statistically significant taxa. Abundances of phytoplankton taxonomic groups over time were examined in relation to P. brevis concentrations to identify any general tendencies. These results indicated the total phytoplankton concentration, and most taxonomic groups, increased at all three site groups regardless of the …

Sagittal otoliths were used to determine the age and growth of 605 larval and juvenile Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, collected in the Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB) and estuarine waters of Virginia. A Laird-Gompertz model (r2 = 0.95) was used to describe the growth of croaker up to 65 mm standard length (SL) and 142 days (t): S1_(t) = 2.657 Exp {4.656 [1-Exp (-0.008lt)]}; SL_(t) = standard length at day t. Generally, croaker collected inshore were larger and older than those collected offshore, indicating estuarine immigration from offshore spawning grounds. Back-calculated hatch-dates indicated spawning over an 8- month period …

Florida Bay is a major nursery for the Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus. The Bay contains a series of hardbottom or seagrass-covered basins separated by mudbanks, which serve as barriers to water circulation and presumably to transport of postlarvae. Temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in the basins and salinities range from 35 ppt to > 50 ppt. In this study I: i) investigated the physiological tolerance of spiny lobster postlarvae to combinations of temperature and salinity representative of conditions in Florida Bay, and ii) examined how postlarval availability and habitat structure influence spiny lobster recruitment into basins. A two year study was undertaken to collect data for the assessment of the impact of the saucer scallop and western king prawn trawl fisheries on the benthic communities in coastal waters off south western Australia, between 31°20'5 and 34°23'5 latitude.

Monitoring of reported commercial landings, on-board sampling of commercial catches, research vessel trawl surveys, experimental and exploratory trawling, and underwater television observations, have enabled the development of an extensive data-base on the fishery and benthic communities of the region.

These data indicate that the existing fishery operates on a number of relatively small, discrete grounds where saucer scallops or …

The Minister for Fisheries announced the 1992/93 fishing season management arrangements for West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery on 11 August 1992. These arrangements arose as a result of the Minister's consideration of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee's recommendations outlined in Fisheries Management Paper no.46.

Following this announcement, on 28 August 1992, the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council Sub-Committee on rock lobster submitted a range of alternative management proposals.

The Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (RLIAC) met in Perth on the 9 September 1992 at the request of the Minister for Fisheries to further examine and report on management arrangements.
