The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of assisted hip rotation on bat velocity. Twenty-one male and female recreational softball and baseball players …

The Effect Of A Single Bout Of High Intensity Intermittent Exercise On Glucose Tolerance In Non-Diabetic Older Adults, Hannah M. Lithgow, Melanie Leggate Jan 2018

The Effect Of A Single Bout Of High Intensity Intermittent Exercise On Glucose Tolerance In Non-Diabetic Older Adults, Hannah M. Lithgow, Melanie Leggate

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 11(3): 95-105, 2018. Our aim was to investigate the acute effects of a single bout of high intensity intermittent training (HIIT) on glucose tolerance and other physiological and metabolic markers in non-diabetic older adults. Fourteen healthy older adults (age, 64 ± 2 y; BMI, 25.7 ± 2.8 kg·m-2) performed two acute exercise trials: continuous moderate intensity exercise (MOD) and HIIT, with the response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) determined <24 hours after. Inflammatory, haematological, and lipid parameters were also assessed the day after each trial. There was an effect of the trials on the insulin response to an OGTT (P=0.047), but not the glucose response. Following an acute bout of HIIT, insulin concentration during an OGTT was elevated at 60 min compared to the control trial (P=0.045), indicating more insulin was secreted, but glucose concentration was unchanged in all trials. The study findings demonstrate that a single bout of HIIT affects the insulin response but not the glycaemic response to a glucose load, proffering a potential benefit for metabolic health in older adults.

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 11(2): 20-31, 2018. Different types of exercise might produce reductions in blood pressure (BP). One physiological mechanism that could explain the lowering adaptation effect on BP after an exercise program is an improved in baroreflex control of muscle sympathetic nerve activity. Consequently, exploring the different methods of training and their post-exercise hypotension (PEH) becomes of interest for healthcare providers. Recently, it has been suggested that blood flow restriction training (BFR) can generate PEH. The aim of this study was to determine the acute response on cardiovascular variables after low intensity resistance training with BFR in …

The existence of race-based stigma among minority populations in the United States has been well-documented. Notably, the acting White accusation has garnered considerable attention in relation to the African American population. Interestingly, studies related to this accusation have been primarily centered around Black students at Predominately White Institutions. Comparably, a focus on African American college students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities is limited. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which student characteristics (i.e., age, classification) are associated with the acting White accusation. Utilizing a quantitative method design, we analyzed over 100 student surveys which …

Game Spirituality: How Games Tell Us More Than We Might Think, Chad Carlson Jan 2018

Game Spirituality: How Games Tell Us More Than We Might Think, Chad Carlson

Faculty Publications

While we often see games as less serious or at least less transcendental than religion there is reason to believe that games can evoke similarly meaningful narratives that allow us to learn a great deal about ourselves and our world. And games do so often using the same symbolic and metaphorical mechanisms that generate meaning in religious experience. In this paper, I explore some of the ways in which game myths—the myths created from and through games—generate meaning in our lives. People experience myths in games very similarly to how they might in religion. I first explain what myth means …

Kinesiology and Health Sciences Publications

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading global cause of death. Diet is known to be important in the prevention of CVD. The PREDIMED trial tested a relatively low-fat diet versus a high-fat Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) for the primary prevention of CVD. The resulting reduction of the CV composite outcome resulted in a paradigm shift in CV nutrition. Though many dietary factors likely contributed to this effect, this review focuses on the influence of the MedDiet on endogenous antioxidant systems and the effect of dietary polyphenols. Subgroup analysis of the PREDIMED trial revealed increased endogenous antioxidant and decreased pro-oxidant activity in …

The Association Between The Coach-Athlete Relationship And Burnout Among High School Coaches, Scott Westfall, Eric M. Martin, Daniel Gould

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Burnout is a term that continues to raise considerable concern among high school coaches and administrators (Raedeke, 1997) and has shown to have negative effects on coaches and athletes alike (Price & Weiss, 2000; Vealey, Armstrong, & Comar, 1998). While burnout has shown to have significant adverse effects, few studies have examined how the coach-athlete relationship may affect a coach s level of perceived burnout. This study sought to understand if the coach-athlete relationship predicted coach burnout. High school coaches (69 males, 62 females) completed the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q; Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004), the Coaching Burnout Questionnaire, a modified …

Repeatability Of The Heart Rate Variability Threshold During Treadmill Exercise, Shane Chambers Jan 2018

Repeatability Of The Heart Rate Variability Threshold During Treadmill Exercise, Shane Chambers

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Purpose: Heart rate variability threshold (HRVT) is a clinical parameter used to gain insight into autonomic balance. Various studies have validated the use of cycle ergometers in determining HRVT, although the literature lacks evidence that treadmill use is a viable means of determining this threshold. We examined the repeatability of HRVT occurrence using standard deviation of normal R-R intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive differences of continuous R-R intervals (RMSSD), and standard deviation of instantaneous beat intervals (SD1) in college aged males using treadmill exercise to see if this is a reliable method of threshold determination.

Methods: Ten healthy, …
