Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) is the maximum capacity of the body to transport and utilize oxygen during incremental exercise. It is expressed either as an absolute rate in liters of oxygen per minute (L/min) or as a relative rate in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). The blood glucose level is defined as the concentration of glucose in the blood, measured in milligrams of glucose per 100 milliliters of blood. Carbohydrate drinks are consumed before exercise because it is believed that it enhances performance by decreasing the rate of muscle glycogen stores, but those drinks …

Optimal Levels Of Creatine Monohydrtate Supplementation For Increases In Anaerobic Performance, Jan Eric Schneider

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Creatine monohydrate is a commonly used supplement amongst athletes in the hopes to improve upon their athletic performance. The theory behind supplementing creatine monohydrate is to add to the body’s own creatine stores so that more is available to be used during high intensity exercise. Creatine is stored as creatine phosphate in skeletal muscles and is used during the initial onset of exercise for about 30 seconds while other fuel systems are increasing their contribution to energy production. Some studies have shown the creatine supplementation can be beneficial to anaerobic performance while other studies have shown no differences between supplement …

Intensity Levels Of Men's Collegiate Basketball Players During Scrimmage., Meghan Humphrey

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) is the maximum capacity of the body to transport and utilize oxygen during incremental exercise. It is expressed either as an absolute rate in liters of oxygen per minute (L/min) or as a relative rate in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). The vector magnitude is the measurement of physical activity (accelerometer counts/min) which can provide a measure of movement during activity and is assessed with an accelerometer. Previous research has shown that maximal oxygen consumption and vector magnitude are both indicative of intensity level of physical activity.

Does Race Matter? The Role Of Race In The Blood Lactate Levels Of Sub-Elite Runners., Nicole Azuogu

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Lactic Acid is a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism. In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate undergoes fermentation instead of entering into the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, which occurs during aerobic glycolysis. During fermentation, pyruvate is reduced to lactate. At about 50-70% of VO2max, there is a substantial increase in lactate accumulation, otherwise known as the Lactate threshold. At this work rate, energy is obtained from glycolysis. Glycolysis at high intensity exercise increases CO2 levels which in turn trigger an increase in ventilation and heart rate. This system is short lived and fatigue sets in quickly due to glycogen depletion, a decrease in …

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) describes a phenomenon of muscle pain or soreness that frequently occurs as a result of strenuous physical activity. DOMS occurs especially during the first few days after such activity. Because DOMS results in functional loss and related activity restriction, prevention and treatment are both important factors to recreational and competitive athletes, and to anyone who participates in vigorous exercises and activities of daily living. Lactic acid and its accumulation was once thought to be a major cause of DOMS, however this is not the case. Research suggested that blood lactate returns to resting levels within one …

The Effects Of Bicycle Warm Up On Maximal Exercise Performance, Bruce Lamotte Feb 2013

The Effects Of Bicycle Warm Up On Maximal Exercise Performance, Bruce Lamotte

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Warm up is widely used in athletic events. Warm up is primarily used to increase performance through increasing muscle and core temperature. The increase in muscle and core temperature is thought to increase blood flow throughout the body, and therefore increase oxygen delivery to the exercising muscles (Bishop et al, 2002). Warm up also acts to reduce muscle and joint stiffness, increase transmission rate of nerve impulses, and change the force velocity relationship (Bishop, 2003)

The Accuracy Of The Traditional Predicted Maximal Heart Rate And Related Equations, Melvin Ibana Feb 2013

The Accuracy Of The Traditional Predicted Maximal Heart Rate And Related Equations, Melvin Ibana

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Most aerobic exercise programs are based on a percentage of an individual’s maximal heart or heart rate reserve, of which maximal heart rate is a component. Maximal heart rate is the highest heart rate achieved by an individual while working at their maximal intensity, usually to fatigue. Maximal heart rate is related to an individual’s age but is not completely dependent upon it. But there are risks that come with exercising maximally and some people do not want to put forth the effort; hence, prediction equations were created. Numerous equations for the prediction of maximal heart rate have been created, …
