Trematode Parasites Of Marine Birds In Antarctica: The Distribution Of Gymnophallus Deliciosus (Olsson 1893), Eric P. Hoberg
Trematode Parasites Of Marine Birds In Antarctica: The Distribution Of Gymnophallus Deliciosus (Olsson 1893), Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
During continuing studies of avian helminths at Palmer Station, Antarctica (Hoberg 1983) trematodes were found as parasites only of charadriiform birds. Digeneans were not represented in extensive collections (including several thousand specimens of helminths) from spheniscids, procellariids, and phalacrocoracids.
The pattern of distribution of trematodes in marine birds in Antarctica is influenced by the availability of suitable intermediate hosts (mollusca) and the foraging behavior of potential final hosts. Littoral environments near Palmer are structurally simple and of low diversity due to ice scouring. The limpet, Nacella polaris, is the dominant intertidal invertebrate and one of the few molluscs that …
Key To Trematodes Reported In Waterfowl, Malcolm Edwin Mcdonald
Key To Trematodes Reported In Waterfowl, Malcolm Edwin Mcdonald
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
This key is the second in a series for identification of the helminths reported in waterfowl (Family Anatidae, Order Anseriformes). The first was a key to nematodes (McDonald 1974).
The trematodes show the greatest variety of forms among the helminth parasites of waterfowl, including over half of all species reported; sometimes this group also includes the greatest part of the worms in a single bird. Over 500 species of trematodes have been reported in waterfowl. Almost all of these have been included in the present set of keys; it was not possible, however, to obtain the descriptions of a few …
Life History Of Philophthalmus Megalurus (Cort, 1914) In Western Oregon, Toni Anne Mcmillan
Life History Of Philophthalmus Megalurus (Cort, 1914) In Western Oregon, Toni Anne Mcmillan
Dissertations and Theses
The specific identification of a megalurous cercaria found in the snail Oxytrema plicifera was accomplished by completing the life cycle in the laboratory. This species is compared with the eastern Philophthalmus megalurus and P. gralli with which it was once confused. The eggs, miracidia, and rediae of the Oregon species were found to be similar to those of the above species. The body and organ sizes and sucker ratios for the cercariae and adult stages obviously indicate that the Oregon species is Philophthalmus megalurus.
Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Fishes Of Puerto Rico, Ather H. Siddiqi, Raymond M. Cable
Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Fishes Of Puerto Rico, Ather H. Siddiqi, Raymond M. Cable
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Preface
This monograph reports the major part of an investigation begun by Raymond M. Cable in 1951, when he spent one year at the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, University of Puerto Rico, Mayagiiez, Puerto Rico, collecting and studying larval trematodes and the helminth parasites of shore birds and marine fishes. The work there was done under the auspices set forth in the Preface to Part 4, Volume 16, of this series; this part was facilitated especially by Virgilio Biaggi, N. T. Mattox, and Donald Erdman, who rendered invaluable assistance in the collection and identification of fishes. One trip …
Some Monogenetic Trematodes From The Galapagos Islands And The Neighboring Pacific, Frank Grose Meserve
Some Monogenetic Trematodes From The Galapagos Islands And The Neighboring Pacific, Frank Grose Meserve
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Introduction
Trematodes are parasitic, unsegmented, flattened (rarely cylindrical) worms. They have ventral, anterior, posterior or median attachment organs. The sense organs are poorly developed. The mouth is terminal or ventral and subterminal. The intestine is usually forked with or without lateral branches. The animals, with few exceptions, are hermaphroditic. The ovary is usually single. They have one, two, or more testes. The development is direct with only one host in the ectoparasitic Monogenea and indirect in the Digenea which have two or more hosts. The digenetic trematodes usually parasitize vertebrates which serve as their primary hosts and invertebrates (Mollusca) which …
Trematodes From The Rat, Horace Wesley Stunkard, Chilson B. Haviland
Trematodes From The Rat, Horace Wesley Stunkard, Chilson B. Haviland
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Occasional examinations of rats for animal parasites have been carried on for over a hundred years. Later, knowledge of the importance of rats as reservoirs of infection and as agents in the transfer of parasitic diseases has led to the regular and careful examination of large numbers in various parts of the world. Among the more recent publications dealing with the parasites of rats may be mentioned Shipley (1908), Moll (1917), Chandler (1921), Balfour (1922), Baylis (1922), Stevenson (1922), Hegner (1923), and Lavier (1924). Notwithstanding the many investigations, only a single trematode parasite has previously been discovered and concerning it …
