Cystic Echinococcosis In The Arctic And Sub-Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Cystic Echinococcosis In The Arctic And Sub-Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The northern biotype of Echinococcus granulosus occurs throughout the holarctic zones of tundra and taiga, from eastern Fennoscandia to the Bering Strait in Eurasia and in North America from arctic Alaska approximately to the northern border of the United States. The cycle of the cestode is complex in taiga at lower latitudes, because of the greater diversity of potential hosts. In the Arctic and Subarctic, however, four patterns of predator/prey relationships may be discerned. Two natural cycles involve the wolf and wild reindeer and the wolf and elk (moose), respectively. Where deer of the two species coexist, both are prey …

We report the use of six oligoprobes designed from intergenic spacer region sequences to identify fourth-stage larvae (L4) of the tribe Cyathostominae. Oligoprobes were designed for identification of the following species: Cylicocyclus ashworthi, Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cylicocyclus insigne, Cyathostomum catinatum, Cylicostephanus goldi, and Cylicostephanus longibursatus. A seventh probe was designed as a positive control to identify all these members of the Cyathostominae. The intergenic spacer region was amplified by PCR using conserved primers. Initially, three oligoprobes were used in Southern blot analysis. To facilitate high-throughput identification, these and a further four oligoprobes were developed for use in a PCR–ELISA. …

Tur megistoproctus, a new species of Laelapinae, is described from the pelage of the echimyid rodent Proechimys dimidiatus from the Atlantic forests of Ilha Grande, south of Rio de Janeiro. Measurements and illustrations are included for females and males. Another laelapine mite species, Tur turki Fonseca, co-occurred with T.megistoproctus in our studies and was recorded from the same host individuals and localities. These 2 laelapine mite species appear to be exclusively associated with a complex of echimyid rodent species (subgenus Trinomys) in the Atlantic forests of southeastern Brazil.

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Metastrongyloidea (Nematoda: Strongylida) Inferred From Ribosomal Rna Gene Sequences, Ramon A. Carreno, Steven A. Nadler
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Phylogenetic relationships among nematodes of the strongylid superfamily Metastrongyloidea were analyzed using partial sequences from the large-subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU rRNA) and small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) genes. Regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, directly sequenced, aligned, and phylogenies inferred using maximum parsimony. Phylogenetic hypotheses inferred from the SSU rRNA gene supported the monophyly of representative taxa from each of the 7 currently accepted metastrongyloid families. Metastrongyloid taxa formed the sister group to representative trichostrongyloid sequences based on SSU data. Sequences from either the SSU or LSU RNA regions alone provided poor resolution for …

Coccidia In The Mammary Glands Of Shrews (Order: Insectivora), Donald W. Duszynski, William C. Marquardt
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Three of 6 female long-clawed shrews, Sorex unguiculatus Dobson, 1890, collected on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, were found to have unsporulated oocysts and sexual stages (both macro- and microgamonts) in varying stages of development of an unidentified coccidium in both lactating and non lactating mammary glands. Gamonts developed in the alveoli of the mammary glands, and oocysts were found in the lactiferous ducts and in pools of milk. Mature macrogamonts were 11.9 × 15.2 μm (10-14 × 14-20 μm), whereas completely developed microgamonts with many gametes were 14.8 × 16.8 μm (10-18 × 13-20 μm). Oocysts in tissue sections …

Eimeria Species From Cryptotis Shrews (Insectivora: Soricidae) With Description Of A New Species, Donald W. Duszynski, Ralph P. Eckerlin, Timothy J. Mccarthy
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Fresh fecal samples from 12 shrews, 10 Cryptotis goodwini Jackson, 1933, and 2 Cryptotis merriami Thomas, 1898, were collected between December 1994 and May 1998; 11 (92%) were positive for eimeriid coccidia, including 8 of 8 C. goodwini and 2 of 2 C. merriami from Honduras and 1 of 2 C. goodwini from Guatemala. Two Eimeria species were found: 1 is consistent with the description of Eimeria whitakeri Upton and McAllister, 1991, and 1 is described in this study as new. Sporulated oocysts of the new species are subspheroidal, 16.8 × 15.7 (14–20 × 15–19) μm, with a length–width (L/W) …

Eimeria Species From Serows (Capricornis Spp.) In Japan With Descriptions Of Two New Species, Lee Couch, Shigehiko Uni, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Fresh fecal samples from 35 Japanese serows Capricornis crispus (Temminck, 1845), and 5 Formosan serows Capricornis swinhoei Gray, 1862, were collected between October 1998 and March 1999. Eimeriid coccidians were found in 12 (34%) Japanese serows and in 1 (20%) Formosan serow. Three Eimeria species were found, and 2 are described here as new. The third species is consistent with the description of Eimeria kamoshika Inoue, 1989. Sporulated oocysts of 1 new species are broadly ellipsoidal, 20.7 × 16.8 μm (18–23 × 14–19 μm) with a length (L):width (W) ratio of 1.2 (1.1–1.4); these lack a micropyle (M) and oocyst …

Taenia Pencei N. Sp. From The Ringtail, Bassariscus Astutus (Carnivora: Procyonidae), In Texas, U.S.A., Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Taenia pencei n. sp. is described from the ringtail, Bassariscus astutus (Carnivora: Procyonidae), in western Texas, U.S.A., and its metacestode is characterized on the basis of specimens from Peromyscus cf. maniculatus in southern Oregon. Taenia pencei n. sp. apparently occurs exclusively in the ringtail, and it is the first cestode of the genus Taenia known from a member of the family Procyonidae. It is morphologically most similar to species of Taenia from mammals of the family Mustelidae in subclade two of the recently constructed phylogeny of that genus. Taenia pencei is distinguished from the nearctic Taenia taxidiensis in the badger …

An Arthropod Defensin Expressed By The Hemocytes Of The American Dog Tick, Dermacentor Variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae), Shane M. Ceraul, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Robert E. Ratzlaff, Wayne L. Hynes
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Both soluble and cell-mediated components are involved in the innate immune response of arthropods. Injection of Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease agent, results in the secretion of defensin into the hemolymph of the ixodid tick, Dermacentor variabilis. The presence of the peptide is observed as early as 15 min post-challenge and remains present through 18 h post-challenge. As observed in insects and soft ticks, the transcript for defensin is detected as early as 1 h post-challenge in D. variabilis. RT-PCR resulted in an amplicon of 624 bp with a 225 bp region that translates to a 74 …
