Quarantine Disinfestation A Bibliography With Relevance To Ornamental Plant Material, Kevin Seaton, Daryl Joyce Jun 1988

Quarantine Disinfestation A Bibliography With Relevance To Ornamental Plant Material, Kevin Seaton, Daryl Joyce

Biosecurity published reports

This bibliography has been compiled as part of a programme to develop new and improved techniques for the insect disinfestation of export cut-flowers and cut-foliage. The objective of the programme is to identify the most effective disinfestation treatments. Suitable treatments should kill insects in the flowers without directly injuring the flowers or reducing their postharvest life.

The bibliography presents references relating to the disinfestation of ornamental material (i.e. cut-flowers, cut-foliage, and potted plants). However, it also includes references on disinfestation of fruit, vegetables, and stored grain where this information has some relevance to the disinfestation of ornamental materials. The bibliography …

Flystrike In Sheep : Secondary And Tertiary Flies Striking Sheep In Western Australia, N Monzu Jan 1979

Flystrike In Sheep : Secondary And Tertiary Flies Striking Sheep In Western Australia, N Monzu

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Unlike primary species of blowflies, the secondary and tertiary species of flies cannot initiate a strike, but their activity in the presence of the primary blowflies becomes significant in the death of struck sheep. This is particularily so when the hairy maggot blowfly is involved. Future management of sheep flocks to minimise deaths may require recognition of these secondary and tirtiary flies.

This article presents some basic facts about these flies.

Interrelationships Of Hypera Postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) And Bathyplectes Curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) In Illinois With Emphasis On Host-Parasite Densities, Distribution Of Parasites Within Available Hosts And Estimates Of Percent Parasitism, Robert John Barney Jan 1977

Interrelationships Of Hypera Postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) And Bathyplectes Curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) In Illinois With Emphasis On Host-Parasite Densities, Distribution Of Parasites Within Available Hosts And Estimates Of Percent Parasitism, Robert John Barney

Masters Theses

In an attempt to better understand the host-parasite relationship of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), all life stages of the parasite were monitored throughout the spring. Sampling was conducted on a degree day basis from early March to late May in an alfalfa field in Mason County, Illinois.

Dissections of host alfalfa weevil larvae revealed 2nd and 3rd host instars were preferred larvae for oviposition. Peak parasite densities were found to precede peak total host larval densities, but coincided with peak densities of the preferred 2nd and 3rd instars. Larger host …

Flystrike Control Programmes, H E. Fels Jan 1971

Flystrike Control Programmes, H E. Fels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE various flystrike control methods all avoid susceptible patches of skin on the sheep.

To avoid work—

• choose methods that give the most control for the least effort, and

• combine these methods into a system that works well.

How To Control Flystrike In Sheep, H E. Fels Jan 1971

How To Control Flystrike In Sheep, H E. Fels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FLYSTRIKE affects incomes and efficiency because a large part of the work done on sheep farms is to prevent or treat it, and because it kills sheep and reduces the amount and quality of production.

A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal Jan 1968

A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

The NAMRU-3 Medical Zoology program began during Easter week of 1950. We had just closed the NAMRU-3 field station at Torit, in Equatoria Province of soulheastern Sudan, and were heading homeward to the United States. However, the offer to remain in Egypt for a year or two to develop a Medical Zoology department at NAMRU-3 provided an interesting challenge after working for several years in tropical forests and grasslands of Africa and other continents. We shall briefly describe subsequent events under four headings: (1) Medical Zoology in Egypt, (2) Ticks and Tickborne Diseases of the World, (3) Kala Azar in …

Index Catalogue To Russian, Central And Eastern European, And Chinese Literature In Medical Entomology, Volume 1: Diptera, George Anastes

United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications

Over the past several years a large number of references from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and China have been collected dealing with arthropods of medical importance. These references were coded on keysort cards which made it possible to index as many as fifteen subject areas on one card. The usefulness of this indexing system was evident by the number of medical entomologists who used it in searching for references in their specialty. In response to requests from workers in the United States and other countries who did not have ready access to the index. it was decided to publish these …

Fruit Fly Control With Rogor 40 And Lebaycid : Progress Report, D G. Shedley Jan 1960

Fruit Fly Control With Rogor 40 And Lebaycid : Progress Report, D G. Shedley

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE Mediterranean fruit fly has been present in Western Australia for over 60 years and during that time many types of insecticides have been tested against the pest.

Traps and lures were amongst the earliest control measures adopted, but these gave way to sugar solutions poisoned with such materials as arsenic and sodium fluosilicate.

Natural And Experimental Infections Of Thelazia Californiensis Price (1930, Nematoda: Thelaziidae) With Descriptions Of The Adult And Larval Parasites, Howard S. Burnett Jun 1958

Natural And Experimental Infections Of Thelazia Californiensis Price (1930, Nematoda: Thelaziidae) With Descriptions Of The Adult And Larval Parasites, Howard S. Burnett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this work was to determine the extent and effects of infestation of the eye worm of mammals, Thelazia californiensis, and to elucidate through experimentation or observation the mode of transmission.

A survey of literature revealed that thelaziasie (infestation by Thelazia species) may cause serious pathological changes in the eye and its adnexa, sometimes resulting in blindness. It was found that reports of thelaziasis in the United States were (with two exceptions) of cases in California. It was further found that T. californiensis has been reported in a wider variety of host than has any of other …

The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata Jan 1937

The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Gizzard-worms of poultry, Cheiloapirura hamulosa, are nematodes occurring in the gizzards of chickens and turkeys.

Summary and Conclusions

Previous to this report the carriers for the gizzard-worm in Hawaii were unknown. Recent investigations by the writer have shown that the flour beetle, Tenebroides nana, and the sand hopper, Orchestia platensis, collected from poultry farms in the Territory of Hawaii have been found naturally infested with the infective larvae of the poultry gizzard-worm, Cheilospirura hamulosa. Out of 8 laboratory-raised chickens to which there were fed about 2,300 grasshoppers that had been collected in an endemic gizzard-worm area, …

Bulletin 106 - The Red-Legged Velvet Earth Mite, L. J. Newman Jan 1923

Bulletin 106 - The Red-Legged Velvet Earth Mite, L. J. Newman

Bulletins 1 - 2999

This pest is sometimes called in error the "Red Spider" or the 'Earth Flea."

It is neither a spider nor a flea, being a species of mite.

It belongs to the family of mites known as the Eupodidae and to the Genus Notophallus. Many of the members of this family are predaceous, that is, they live upon other insects or animals, but the species we are dealing with appears to be wholly a plant feeder. A popular idea is that the mite lives and breeds in the earth. The rapidity with which newly planted vegetables become infested gives good excuse …
