Differential Progression Of Pancreatic Premalignancy In Geographically Distant Murine Transgenic Cohorts Uncovers Key Role Of Microbial Metabolites, Rian M. Howell May 2025

Differential Progression Of Pancreatic Premalignancy In Geographically Distant Murine Transgenic Cohorts Uncovers Key Role Of Microbial Metabolites, Rian M. Howell

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Despite recent advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer that remains highly lethal. Efforts have been made to increase the understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving early stages of tumor development, when the cancer is most susceptible to intervention. To this end, genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) have been developed with the mutations most commonly seen in the patient population. Expression of these mutations in select cellular compartments has resulted in the ability to recapitulate characteristics of human pancreatic cancer such as the development of …

Establishment Of Bacteroides In The Gut And Its Role In The Cystic Fibrosis Gut-Lung Axis, Rebecca A. Valls Jun 2024

Establishment Of Bacteroides In The Gut And Its Role In The Cystic Fibrosis Gut-Lung Axis, Rebecca A. Valls

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

In the quest to understand the complex interplay between the gut microbiota and cystic fibrosis (CF), a disease characterized by chronic upper respiratory complications and an exacerbated proinflammatory response, our lab engaged in a collaborative study with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) to characterize the gut microbiota of pediatric CF patients. Initial analyses established a connection between gut microbial composition and respiratory health, particularly highlighting a scarcity of Bacteroides species compared to healthy controls. In following investigations, we utilized random forest models to understand how stool microbiota may influence clinical outcomes of these pediatric CF patients, including: age, upper respiratory infections, …

Changes In The Microbial Community Of Lubomirskia Baicalensis Affected By Red Sponge Disease, Colin Rorex May 2018

Changes In The Microbial Community Of Lubomirskia Baicalensis Affected By Red Sponge Disease, Colin Rorex

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lake Baikal is the oldest known lake and a unique ecosystem, home to several species of fresh water sponge. A disease outbreak affecting the dominant species, Lubormirskia baialensis, was recently reported. The cause of the disease has not been determined but one of the current hypothesis is that the increase in methane concentration is correlated to the disease outbreak. This pilot study characterized the microbiomes of sick and healthy sponges through the use of 16S rRNA sequencing. Sick sponge microbiomes shared a conserved group of taxa while the healthy sponge microbiomes had greater diversity. Indicator species analysis identified two significant …

Manipulation Of The Microbiome And Its Impact On Functional Recovery Following Ischemic Stroke, Michal Jandzinski May 2015

Manipulation Of The Microbiome And Its Impact On Functional Recovery Following Ischemic Stroke, Michal Jandzinski

Honors Scholar Theses

Each year, nearly 800,000 individuals residing in the United States will have a stroke. Of these, about 130,000 cases will prove fatal while many of the survivors will be forced to live with disability for the remainder of their lives. Out of all strokes over 87% are ischemic strokes. The widespread incidence of this debilitating condition costs the United States an estimated $36.5 billion dollars every single year. Despite this, clinicians are armed with very little to combat the disease. Recent research developments have brought about the rise in awareness about the importance of the microbiome, the various gut flora …
