Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Commitee Chairman's Report, October 1994 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery - Management Proposals For The 1994/95 And 1995/96 Seasons, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee, Peter Rogers
Fisheries Management Papers
The failures of past restrictions on fishing effort to fully halt the decline of the breeding stock led to the formation of a sub-committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee. The prime objective of the sub-committee is to evaluate effective long term strategies for managing the fishery so that breeding stock is maintained at an adequate level despite the inevitable increases in catching efficiency. The purpose of this report is firstly to advise industry of the management proposals for the 1994/95 seasons and secondly to form a basis for industry consultation on management arrangements for the 1995/96 season.

It is focussed exclusively on law enforcement issues associated with the management options for the West Australian west coast rock lobster fishery which were under consideration by the Sub Committee at the time of report preparation and should be read in conjunction with Fisheries Management Paper No. 67 entitled "Evaluation of management options" which covers the broader industry management issues. This report …
Long Term Management Strategies For The Western Rock Lobster Fishery (4 Volumes) - A Market-Based Economic Assessment For The Western Rock Lobster Industry (May 1994) (Volume 3), Marec Pty Ltd
Fisheries Management Papers
In October 1992 a special Sub-Committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee was set up to consider and evaluate future management strategies for the rock lobster fishery. Pursuant to this the Director of Fisheries commissioned a marketing study that is the basis of this report. This study was commenced in early October 1993 and completed in May 1994. This study looked at the market implications of fishery's management strategies. In particular it assesses how the existing management structure limits the potential for the lobster industry to maximise the financial return, and in doing so provides an insight into the …
Long Term Management Strategies For The Western Rock Lobster Industry (4 Volumes) - Economic Efficiency Of Alternative Input And Output Based Management Systems In The Western Rock Lobster Fishery (Volume 2), Bob Lindner
Fisheries Management Papers
Since 1965, the Western Rock Lobster Fishery has been managed by what is essentially a license limitation scheme invoiving restricted entry for boats, and strict controls on the aggregate number of pots which can be used by the commercial fishing sector. By most measures, management of this fishery has been highly successful. Biological over-exploitation of the fish stock has been prevented, at least until recently. Notwithstanding these achievements, there is widespread concern that the future profitability, and even the viability of the industry is under threat unless the current management practices are reformed. Because of the complexity and intrinsic uncertainty …

A survey of fishes in and around Shipstern Nature Reserve in Northern Belize, Central America, was carried out over a period of eight months, from February to September 1990. Its purpose was to establish a preliminary list of the fishes of Shipstern Nature Reserve, including descriptions, distribution and collecting data and additionally to describe some of the habitats in which the fishes were found. This study focuses on fishes considered to be freshwater species. These occurred for the greater part in brackish habitats. Nevertheless, a few fish considered as marine species were caught in the waters of the reserve and …
Can Genetically Engineered Crops Become Weeds?, Kathleen H. Keeler
Can Genetically Engineered Crops Become Weeds?, Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
There are significant differences if the distribution of weedy characteristics among weeds, normal plants, and crops. The world’s most serious weeds possess on the average 10 or 11 of these characters, a random collection of British plants have an average seven of the traits, and crop plants only five. For the average crop to become as “weedy” as the average weed, it would need to acquire five weedy traits. Even using the unlikely assumption that those traits are single loci in which a dominant mutation would provide the weedy character, this would require the simultaneous acquisition of five gene substitutions. …

Fisheries Management Papers
The total catch of about 12.1 million kilograms for the 1987/88 season, based on processor returns, was an increase of 44% on the 1986/87 season. This very high catch, the third highest on record, resulted from an above average perulus settlement in 1983/84 and a "flow-on" of fast growing animals stemming from the expected high recruitment in 1988/990 caught as "reds" in 1987/88.
The Committee has identified five major elements related to the state of the rock lobster fishery upon which management advice is considered.
a) The undersize fraction of the population.
b) The "whites" which provide a significant proportion …

Caribbean Island Zoogeography: A New Approach Using Mitochondrial Dna To Study Neotropical Bats, Carleton J. Phillips, Dorothy E. Pumo, Hugh H. Genoways, Phillip E. Ray
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Genetic analysis of animal mitochondrial DNA is a new and valuable addition to the battery of techniques available to zoogeographers. This paper describes characteristics of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that make it applicable for the study of island zoogeography.
Some traditional zoogeographic questions are examined using mtDNA from the Neotropical fruit bat, Artibeus jamaicensis. The specific questions are: 1) To what extent are island populations isolated (that is, does interbreeding occur between the insular subspecies)? 2) Can a single founding female account for the mitochondrial genomes on specific islands in the Antilles? 3) Is there a correlation between the genomic …

Mitochondrial Dna Polymorphism In Three Antillean Island Populations Of The Fruit Bat, Artibeus Jamaicensis, Dorothy E. Pumo, Everett Z. Goldin, Beth Elliot, Carleton J. Phillips, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The Neotropical fruit bat, Artibeus jamaicensis, occurs throughout Latin America and on many islands in the Caribbean. Populations from Jamaica (in the Greater Antilles) to Barbados (in the Lesser Antilles) have been classified as a subspecies (A. j. jamaicensisi separate from that on the Lesser Antillean island of St. Vincent (A. j. schwartzi). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was isolated from 54 individuals collected on these islands, analyzed by digestion with restriction endonucleases, and the restriction sites were mapped. Three different mtDNA genotypes (16,000 ± 200 bp) were identified: J-1 (16 animals from Jamaica, one from St. Vincent, …
