Buoyancy Changes As Related To Respiratory Behavior In An Amphibious Snail, Pomacea Urceus (Müller), From Venezuela, Kathleen A. Burky, Albert J. Burky

The ampullariid Pomacea urceus uses its ctenidium and lung in respiration. The snails reach the surface with their siphon and ventilate their lung by withdrawing their head-foot in a pumping action. The lung gas also serves to change the buoyancy of the snails. After a ventilation a snail does not necessarily return to the same buoyancy level. They may achieve overall specific gravities of <1 to > 1 after a ventilation. They may remain submerged (s.g. > 1) or float (s.g.

Bvr-1, A Restriction Locus Of A Type C Rna Virus In The Feline Cellular Genome: Identification, Location, And Phenotypic Characterization In Cat X Mouse Somatic Cell Hybrids, Stephen J. O'Brien

Somatic cell hybrids were constructed between BALB/c-RAG mouse cells and feline lymphoma cells by the hypoxanthine-aminopterin-thymidine selection scheme. RAG cells spontaneously produce an endogenous B-tropic type C virus. Cat-mouse hybrids preferentially segregate feline chromosomes and retain murine chromosomes,demonstrable by karyotypic and isozyme analyses. Despite the presence of the complete mouse genome, including the viral genome, virus production was diminished to 1-5% of the levels observed in RAG parents based upon particle-associated RNA-dependent DNA polymerase (reverse transcriptase) activity in the culture fluid. Eatonia was a newsletter established to facilitate communication among scientists working on a group of aquatic insects in the order Ephemeroptera, more commonly known as mayflies. The newsletter is named after Rev. Alfred E. Eaton who studied mayflies in England in the late 1800’s and is considered the “father” of the modern classification of mayflies.

"Null" mutations previously isolated at the αGpdh-1 locus of Drosophila melanogaster, because of disruption of the energy-producing α-glycerophosphate cycle, severely restrict the flight ability and relative viability of affected individuals. Two "null" alleles, αGpdh-1BO-1-4, and αGpdh-1BO-1-5, when made hemizygous with a deficiency of the αGpdh-1 locus,Df(2L)GdhA, were rendered homozygous by recombination with and selective elimination of the Df(2L)GdhA chromosome. Two group A phages, P9c/2 and P4/2, were studied. Their density, sedimentation velocity, and biochemical properties were compared. Their densities were determined by density gradient centrifugation in 38.3% cesium chloride. Sedimentation velocity was used to determine their molecular weights. To accomplish this, the DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was labeled with tritium and T2 DNA, labeled with 32P, was used as a standard. The DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was separately mixed with T2 DNA and centrifuged in a 0-15% sucrose gradient. The molecular weights were calculated using the formula D2/D1= (M2 …

An Analysis Of Gene-Enzyme Variability In Natural Populations Of Drosophila Melanogaster And D. Simulans, Stephen J. O'Brien, Ross J. Macintyre

Nine populations of D. melanogaster and two populations of D. simulans were analyzed for polymorphism in 10 gene-enzyme systems by the technique of gel electrophoresis. In the eight natural populations of D. melanogaster, an average of 54% of the enzymes were polymorphic, and the average heterozygosity was 22.7%. An experimental population of D. melanogaster, which has been maintained in a laboratory cage for 20 years, showed levels of polymorphism equivalent to those of natural populations. The D. simulans populations had much less variability. The possible factors involved in maintaining these polymorphisms are discussed.

Over 90% recovery of phage P4/2 was realized with differential centrifugation concentration and purification, whereas only about 16% was recovered from the aqueous two-phase polymer - Genetron - ECTEOLA-cellulose column system. Purity of preparations was greatest with the density gradient centrifugation (A260 = 2.66 and A280 = 1.80 per 1012 plaque-forming units). With the chemical system of concentration and purification followed by an ECTEOLA anion exchange run, the A260 was 6.6 and the A280 was 4.3.
