LANDSAT-l imagery and satellite photography have been utilized for land-use mapping. This study investigated the correlation between woodland stands mapped and their percent crown closure using LANDSAT-l imagery and Skylab-4 photography. On the basis of percent accuracy of crown closure classes mapped or not mapped, Skylab-4 photography proved superior over LANDSAT-l imagery for mapping woodlands

Effects Of Land Disposal Of Pulp Mill Effluents On Plant Nutrient Uptake And Element Balance, Joseph B. Schwarzback

An analysis of the soil and plant tissues was undertaken to ascertain the effect that land irrigation with pulp mill effluent has on nutrient uptake and element balance of tree seedlings. Results show that the effluent significantly increased the sodium content of both soil and tissue; however, these levels fell far below the level necessary to become detrimental to plant life, soil chemistry and soil structure. There was evidence that the increase of elements from the effluent provided positive effects in growth and plant health. There was no evidence of sodium toxicity or calcium starvation. Stephen F. Austin State University was awarded a contract in August 1971 to select the 1,200 acres best suited for recreation area development on three proposed flood control reservoirs. At that time, there was no central publication which could be used as a guide for such a project. This thesis was written to help correct this situation. The nine factors that were used in initial site selection are soils, topography, access, wind, vegetation, land ownership, distribution of the sites, bridges and open-water and cove locations. A forest fire simulation exercise was developed for the purpose of supplementing forest fire instruction, presenting students with decision-making situations encountered on forest fires, and introducing them to the fire simulator at Stephen F. Austin State University. The final exercise was developed after preliminary work and development of a more simple exercise. The problems with equipment, recruitment of simulator personnel, and the development and execution of the simulator exercises are discussed. Scheduling adequate time for practice, and providing adequate personnel training were found to be the major obstacles in simulator use. Future fire simulator use at SFA will be dependent …

Two pulp mill effluents, NaOH extraction water from the pulp bleaching process and water from the chlorination step of the pulp bleaching process, were applied to jars containing three East Texas soils. Carbon dioxide evolution was then measured with an infrared gas analyzer to determine the effect of the effluents on the respiration of soil microorganisms. The relationship between effluent treatments was not statistically significant, though detrimental effects were observed in the heavier soil. Irrigation of clays and clay loams with the effluent is not recommended. Irrigation of sandy soils should be possible if there is no danger of sub-surface …

Pine Seedling Survival And Growth Related To Moisture Retention Of Eight Texas Forest Soils, Curtis Eneim

Greenhouse studies showed that loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedling survival under severe drought and height growth under favorable and unfavorable moisture conditions were related to moisture retention values of eight East Texas soil types. Soil moisture retention constants nearer to field capacity tensions may give better indications of survival and development in droughty areas than moisture constants nearer to wilting point tensions. Likewise, water consumption (evapotranspiration) during favorable moisture conditions and during moisture stress was related to soil moisture retention characteristics. Costly reforestation failures can be avoided by examining the soil moisture retention characteristics of prospective planting sites to …
