Many parks are now using social media sites to connect with visitors but little is known about how effective these efforts have been. This study examined the influence of social media use on interpretive outcomes and place attachment. Visitors to four parks in the San Francisco Bay Area were surveyed twice, once as they exited the park (n = 529) and a second time via email (n = 216) six to ten weeks after visiting. Attitudes And Motivational Factors For Participation In The Becoming An Outdoors-Woman (Bow) Program, Katherine Crippens

Women participating in Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program workshops were surveyed as to their attitudes, interests, and participation in outdoor recreation activities. The survey, administered to 265 women between October 2002 and June 2003, examined demographic characteristics, motivational factors for participation, similarities and differences between firsttime and returning participants, and their change in recreational behavior after the workshops. The study identified most BOW participants as urban, white, 45 - 50 years of age, highly educated and with a high household income. Most have maintained a long-term relationship, but have no children in the household. The participants had a wide range …

In 1998, it was estimated that 40.5 % of U.S. anthropogenic CO2 emissions was attributed to the combustion of fossil fuels during the generation of electricity (U.S. Department of Energy 2000a). The State of Texas emits more carbon dioxide (C02) into the atmosphere than any other state in the United States. With environmental concerns escalating, the U.S. may be forced to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases. The first target of these reductions will likely be utility companies that utilize coalfired power plants. In order to mitigate CO2 emissions, utility companies may want to either purchase carbon credits which can be obtained through carbon sequestration on NIPF lands or manage reclaimed mined lands for maximum carbon sequestration. Camptotheca Decaisne is the major source of the promising anti-cancer alkaloids camptothecins. The main objectives of this study are (1) to reveal the genetic diversity of Camptotheca and to identify taxa with RAPD markers; (2) to determine the camptothecin (CPT) variations within and among different populations and taxa, with tissues, season, and age; and (3) to determine the effects of environmental stress on the camptothecin production in Camptotheca. This study addressed the application of Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines in outdoor recreation settings. The purpose was three-fold: to develop site- and user-friendly design principles for non-urban, accessible nature trails; to design and construct a trail based on those principles; and to evaluate both principles and trail by surveying trail users. The Delphi Method was employed with a national panel to assess current expert opinion regarding accessibility and trails. Fifty-nine principles were developed from combined results of panel deliberations and applied experience gained constructing a prototype trail utilizing the universal design concept. The wood mechanical properties of progeny from twelve open-pollinated parent trees were examined. Six families were from parents which had high wood specific gravity and six were from parents which had low wood specific gravity. Thirty-two-year-old trees, that had been planted at Many, Louisiana, were sampled and juvenile and mature wood test specimens were prepared. Maximum crushing strength, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and wood specific gravity were determined from compression parallel to the grain tests and static bending tests. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and remote sensing techniques were utilized to characterize and subsequently predict potential habitat of Gaillardia aestivalis var. Winkleri, occurring in Hardin County, TX. Field investigations along with CIR positive aerial photographs were used to study local distribution and ecological requirements (soil, site, plant associations) of the plant. Data were obtained from paper maps, aerial photographs and a Landsat TM image. Sites occupied by G. aestivalis var. Water quality and stream discharge were monitored at six sites on two Nacogdoches County, Texas streams over a nine month period (March - November 1995). Three sites were located in forested watersheds and the other three sites were downstream of pastured watersheds surface-applied with poultry litter, a potential nonpoint source of pollution. Stream water samples were analyzed for Ca, K, Mg, Na, 03-N ,TKN, P04-P, TP, TSS, pH, and dissolved oxygen. A rapid bioassessment was conducted to assess aquatic life stream conditions. An instrument was developed and evaluated for measuring the effect of the Texas Environmental Education Advisory Committee (TEEAC) endorsed teacher inservice programs on participants' ecological vocabulary. Principal study objectives were to establish a basic ecological vocabulary essential to environmental education and evaluate the instrument's effectiveness in measuring change in participants' ecological vocabulary resulting from exposure to TEEAC programs. The Ecological Vocabulary Survey (EVS) was developed from 57 ecological terms. Sayok's (1986) study and statistical analysis of the climate at Nacogdoches, Texas covering 1901 to 1980 is updated to include the most recent twelve years (1981-92) of records. Missing data are estimated, all analyses are repeated, and the new 1961-90 normal climate is compared to the 1951-80 and other normals. Results showed that the climate at Nacogdoches during the last decade was about the same as that in other recent decades. Thomthwaite's (1957) climate classification defines Nacogdoches as moist subhumid, third mesothermal, with moderate summer water deficiency, and a temperature effIciency regime equal to a fourth mesothermal climate. A visitor survey was conducted at Ratcliff and Double Lake National Forest Recreation Areas to evaluate visitor characteristics and the effectiveness of interpretive services as a management tool. Two hundred eighty-two campers completed the visitor survey. A one hundred percent sample was attempted at both recreation areas every Sunday morning during July and August of 1991. Data from both recreation areas were analyzed and compared in order to determine any significant differences between visitors in each recreation area and also between visitors who attended or did not attend interpretive programs.

Projections of supply and demand for timber appear to indicate a domestic shortage in Peninsular Malaysia by the year 2000. Timber shortage will result in loss of foreign exchange, retrenchment of timber workers, inflate prices and depress construction and housing industries. Compensatory Forest Plantation Program (CFPP) is one of the methods taken by the Malaysian Government to avert this impending crisis. CFPP was officially launched in 1983, in four States of Peninsular Malaysia. By 1989, forest plantations totaling 36,874 hectares were established. Analyses of a variety of climatic variables generated from 80 years (1901-80) of daily precipitation and temperature data collected by the National Weather Service showed that Nacogdoches is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with an average annual precipitation and temperature of 45.96 inches and 65.5°F, respectively. The summer is warm and dry with mean maximum temperature of 91.6°F while winter is mild with mean minimum temperature of 38°F. There were no statistical differences between mean annual temperature and precipitation on the 1951-80 and 1901-80 periods or between any 2 normal periods. Rain days occurred once in every 4 days …

Cartographic modeling was used to evaluate the natural resources of the Angelina National Forest in East Texas. With the aid of the Map Analysis Package, three models were developed to evaluate historic changes, project future trends and to determine the proximity of resource to a specific location. Accuracies of results were determined at two different scales. MAP estimates at the smaller scales were about 92% and about 98% at the larger scale. Five levels of nitrogen fertilizer combined with three levels of phosphorus fertilizer were tested in a two year-old loblolly pine plantation on a lignite mine spoil in East Texas. Growth parameters, foliar and spoil nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were measured after two growing seasons. Nitrogen increased diameter growth during the first year, and foliar nitrogen increased with increasing fertilizer rates for both years. Phosphorus increased height during the first year and over both years combined and also increased diameter during the second year and over both years combined. Sulfate leaching from sulphur-binding agents used in asphalt pavement was significantly higher (p>.05) from four layers of a mixture of a single aggregate base material of hot sand, when compared to all other treatments. Analysis of the data showed that the other treatments had no overall effect on the soil sulfates. Four layers of a single aggregate of hot sand increased the quantity of sulfates in the soil by 107%. Loblolly pine seedlings from Lost Pines (drought-hardy) and East Texas (regular) seed sources were planted in lignite minesoils in Panola County, Texas. Heights, root-collar diameters, and survival were monitored for two years. Treatments included application of Pisolithus tinctorius basidiospores immediately after planting and use of acephate for tip moth control during the second growing season. Standard foliar analyses were conducted at the end of the second growing season. East Texas seedlings grew more in height and root-collar diameter, and had higher survival percentages than Lost Pines. No growth response from treatment with P. tinctorius was observed. A soil reconnaissance survey was conducted on 2,500 acres adjacent to Sam Rayburn Reservoir, in the Angelina National Forest, San Augustine County, the future site of the proposed Piney woods Conservation Center. Data from the soil reconnaissance survey was interpreted and organized into a soil studies educational unit to be used to familiarize teachers with a variety of soils and their properties. Five of the eight soils were integrated into the study unit which is a portion of the total outdoor education and conservation program to be developed for the Piney Woods Conservation Center.

Seedlings of Pinus halepensis and P. brutia were grown from seeds in a greenhouse. When 6 months old, randomly sampled seedlings were subjected to water stress by withholding irrigation. During this period, foliage and root characteristics of seedlings not under moisture stress were recorded. Pinus halepensis showed the greater ability to endure moisture stress and to maintain a higher level of needle-moisture content during the dry-down period. Meanwhile, P. brutia showed important anatomical and morphological adaptations which enable the species to conserve moisture.

Effects of site preparation on survival and growth of planted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) on a loblolly-shortleaf pine-hardwood forest site in East Texas are examined by determining the survival and growth of planted loblolly pine, soil chemical characteristics, and density and height of competing (non-pine) woody stems. Three replications of four site preparation treatments (control, burn, chop, KG blade) resulted in the KG bladed plots having the highest survival, height, and diameter, but the lowest nutrient levels while, also, most effectively controlling competing vegetation. A comparison of three mass media ( TV, radio and newspaper) was made to find which would be more effective at communicating forestry information to young people. The field study was conducted at Nacogdoches, Lufkin, and Kilgore High Schools in East Texas. Questionnaires given to students before and after exposure to six media spots tested forestry knowledge and attitudes. One spot in each medium presented a hardsell threat approach, the other a softsell-humorous approach. A final questionnaire measured student preferences of the media. The effects of artificial soil infestation with basidiospores and vegetative mycelia of the fungal symbiont Pisolithus tinctorius on ectomycorrhizae development of short leaf pine (Pinus echinata) seedlings grown in styroblock containers were tested in the greenhouse. These preliminary tests showed that both spores and mycelia will produce satisfactory ectomycorrhizae development. Various methods of inoculation had little effect on growth and development of containerized seedlings or on the accumulation of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Zn, or Cu in foliage and lateral roots. Zinc concentrations in the root, terminal growth, stem, and needles of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were measured in 72 seedlings grown in washed sand, fertilized with Zn(N03)2. Zinc treatment periods were early spring, late spring, and summer. Zinc uptake was the greatest in early spring. Zinc nitrate fertilizer and remaining soil zinc at treatments end had no effect on mycorrhizae, height, or diameter growth. Linear and multiple regressions were derived using residual soil zinc and treatment zinc that can predict zinc concentrations in different plant parts that have r values from .7440 to .8170. Field observation of lignite strip mine spoils from the Darco mine near Marshall, Texas, revealed that gray spoil materials of various ages were devoid of vegetation. Within the same sites, spoil materials which were non-gray supported several conditions of revegetation. Analysis of spoil materials from this mine was undertaken to determine if spoils were differentiated on a chemical basis. Gray materials appear to have greater mineral sources of zinc, iron, and sulfate than non-gray spoils, and greater concentrations of zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium at all sites. One-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings were grown in a greenhouse in potted mixtures of two Texas lignite fly ashes and a Troup sand, Sacul sandy loam, and a sandy clay loam strip-mine spoil. Mixtures contained 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent fly ash. After six months, soil fly ash mixtures were analyzed for N, P, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Mn, Zn, pH, cation-exchange capacity, percent base saturation, and texture. The objectives of this study were to determine whether prescribed burning affected nutrient levels in leaves and twigs of six species and whether there were differences in response between leaves and twigs. Backfire and headfire treatments were used to determine differences between burning techniques. Samples were collected in October, 1974. The burn was in March, 1975 and post-burn sampling was in June, 1975, September, 1975, and June, 1976. Leaf and twig tissue were analyzed for contents of protein, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus and then subjected to statistical analysis. No difference was found between burning techniques. The purpose of this study was to determine if the direct mechanical manipulation of compacted campground soils, with and without the addition of organic materials and the planting of grasses, had any long lasting effect on the amelioration of these deteriorated campsites. An attempt was also made to determine the natural recovery time for East Texas sandy loam soils using the campground closure method. Closure or partial (seasonal) closure of campsites reduced compaction to an acceptable level in three years. Roto-tilling alone was the least effective treatment.
