Reforestation Of Harvested Timberlands In Mississippi: Behavior And Attitudes Of Non-Industrial, Private Forest Landowners, J. E. Gunter, Steven H. Bullard, M. L. Doolittle, K. G. Arano
Faculty Publications
Southern forests play an increasingly important role in the timber economy as per capita demand for wood continues to expand. Moreover, harvest restrictions in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s shifted a large portion of United States demand for softwoods to the South. In Mississippi, most of the forestland is owned by non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners. Approximately 314,000 NIPF landowners control 66 percent of the state’s forestland base (Hartsell and London 1995). The sizable acreage of timberland held by NIPF landowners nationally and in-state underscores the importance of their role in the timber economy and weighs heavily in …

Stand Structure And Species Composition In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of East Texas, A. Gordon Holley, Leslie A. Dale, Brian P. Oswald, Gary D. Kronrad
Faculty Publications
Bottomland hardwood forests, growing on the flood plains of rivers and streams, comprise about 14 percent (1.6 million acres) of the total commercial forest land in East Texas. These stands represent high values for a variety of forest uses such as timber production and wildlife habitat. However, information on these forests is not as complete as that of the southern U.S. For this study, data from 445 ten-factor variable radius inventory points were used to characterize stand structure, species composition and the general condition of bottomland hardwood forest throughout East Texas. The importance of this information and its impact on …

Soil And Nutrient Loss Following Site Preparation Burning, J. P. Field, Kenneth W. Farrish, E. A. Carter
Faculty Publications
Sediment loss and nutrient concentrations in runoff were evaluated to determine the effects of site preparation burning on a recently harvested loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) site in east Texas. Sediment and nutrient losses prior to treatment were approximately the same from control plots and pretreatment burn plots. Nutrient analysis of runoff samples indicated that the prescribed burn caused increased losses of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg from treatment plots. Preliminary results indicate a significant increase in sediment concentration and sediment loss following the prescribed burning application. The data indicate a gradual decline in sediment loss and nutrient …
Adjusting Discount Rates For Income Taxes And Inflation: A Three-Step Proces, Steven H. Bullard, John E. Gunter
Adjusting Discount Rates For Income Taxes And Inflation: A Three-Step Proces, Steven H. Bullard, John E. Gunter
Faculty Publications
Income taxes and inflation must be correctly accounted for in forest valuation and investment analysis. In a specific analysis, the discount rate and all costs and revenues should be either before or after taxes, and they should include or exclude inflation consistently. We summarize eight formulas for adjusting discount rates for income taxes and inflation in a simple three-step process. A one-page figure is presented that can be used as a stand-alone tool for correctly adjusting discount rates. South. J. Appl. For. 24(4):193-195.

In 1994 eighty four permanent research plots were established in two twelve year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantations in East Texas. Plots differed in relation to: soil-site type, density of trees per acre, fertilization treatments, and competing vegetation control. Three levels of thinning treatments reduced the basal areas to 36,60, and 84 square feet of basal area (approximately 100,200, and 300 stems, respectively) per acre. All residual trees were pruned to a height of 25 feet. Plots were re-measured in 1995, 1996, and 1998. Significant differences in diameter and height growth rates were detected in 1996 and 1998. Average diameter …

The Land Expectation Value Calculated In Timberland Valuation, T. J. Straka, Steven H. Bullard
The Land Expectation Value Calculated In Timberland Valuation, T. J. Straka, Steven H. Bullard
Faculty Publications
Appraisers often use discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques to value timber and timberland. Land expectation value (LEV) is a standard DCF technique applied to many timberland situations. LEV calculates the value of bare land in perpetual timber production and is often used to value evenaged pine plantations. However, it is also useful in the valuation of immature timber stands and uneven-aged timber stands cut periodically. These models have wide applicability in timberland appraisal situations.
