Aspen Regeneration On Log Decking Areas As Influenced By Season And Duration Of Log Storage, Kevin N. Renkema, Victor J. Lieffers, Simon M. Landhausser

Aspen Bibliography

This study assessed aspen regeneration on decking areas as affected by season of log deck building and duration of log storage; as well as root wounding, soil com- paction, and slash depth. On former decking areas that were built after a summer harvest, aspen regeneration was 50% lower and root death 35% greater compared to former decking areas of a fall harvest. Duration of log storage after a fall harvest had little effect on aspen regeneration; short (1.5–3 months) or long (11 months) storage resulted in similar regeneration. Slash load was greatly increased on decking areas while root wounding and …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The differences in the reproductive biology of overwintered (OW) and F_1 generation of Trissolcus semistriatus Nees and T. festivae Victorov (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) were investigated under laboratory conditions. The experiments were conducted to evaluate oviposition period, lifetime fecundity, female progeny, sex ratio, and longevity of OW and F_1 generation with the two species as factors. The results of this study showed that the oviposition period of F_1 generation was longer than that of OW females for both of the two parasitoid species. With the exception of F_1 generation of T. festivae, the highest daily average progeny production of females was recorded …

In this study the proportion of lignin in wood tissue was analysed in 36 Scots pines differing in their form of dead bark. Material for analyses came from pure pine stands aged 89-91 years located in northern Poland. Chemical analyses were performed in the mature wood zone comprising the last 10 diameter increments located at a height of 1.3 m (DBH). Results indicate differences in lignin content and growth rate in pines whose stems were characterized by different forms of dead bark. The study showed significant differences in lignin contents between trees with shell and scaly dead bark and trees …

Putative Agents Of Fig Mosaic Disease In Turkey, Kadri̇ye Çağlayan, Vicente Medina, Mona Gazel, Çi̇ğdem U. Serçe, Luis Serrano, Angeles Achon, Soner Soylu, Oğuzhan Çalişkan, Mustafa Gümüş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Leaves from 58 fig tree accessions showing different severity of mosaic and necrotic symptoms were collected in 2 different regions of Turkey and analysed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and RT-PCR to determine putative causal agents of fig mosaic disease (FMD). Ultrastructural studies showed that double membrane-bound bodies (DMBs) were mainly observed in the parenchyma and mesophyll cells of infected leaves of the cultivars Göklop and Morgüz and some seedlings showing only mosaic symptoms. These bodies were surrounded by a fibrillar matrix in most of the infected cells. Long, flexuous rod-shaped virus-like particles (LFPs) were also observed in vascular tissues …

The Influence Of Hot Water Extraction On Physical And Mechanical Properties Of Osb, Juan Jacobo Paredes Heller Jan 2009

The Influence Of Hot Water Extraction On Physical And Mechanical Properties Of Osb, Juan Jacobo Paredes Heller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The finite reserves of petroleum are driving renewed interest in technologies that allow for sustainable production of energy. There are a wide variety of technologies with well-developed infrastructure like the oriented strand board (OSB) industry, which could be used as launch point for developing biorefineries. The effects of hot water extraction (HWE) on two hardwood species (Acer rubrum, Populus tremuloides) and softwood species (mixture of southern yellow pine, Tsuga canadensis) were studied. The HWE resulted in a weight loss (WL) that increased as the severity factor (SF) was extended. Hardwood had the biggest WL values at equivalent extraction conditions. The …

Location: Bear River Range, within the Rocky Mountains, in northern Utah and southern Idaho, USA. Method: Forty-seven randomly selected mid-elevation aspen stands were sampled for lichens and stand conditions. Plots were characterized according to tree species cover, basal area, stand age, bole scarring, tree damage, and presence of lichen species. We also recorded ammonia emissions with passive sensors at 25 urban and agricultural sites throughout an adjacent populated valley upwind of the forest stands. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) …

The Influences Of Conventional And Low Density Thinning On Leaf Area, Growth, And Growing Space Relationships Of Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus L.), Christopher Henry Guiterman Jan 2009

The Influences Of Conventional And Low Density Thinning On Leaf Area, Growth, And Growing Space Relationships Of Eastern White Pine (Pinus Strobus L.), Christopher Henry Guiterman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the commercial importance and widespread management of eastern white pine {Pinus strobus L.) in the Northeast, surprisingly little is known about the effects of thinning on even-aged stand development. To address this, patterns of leaf area, bole form, volume growth, and growth efficiency - defined as volume increment per unit leaf area - were examined over a 17-year period within a thinning study in central Maine designed to compare the conventional B-line and low density thinning regimes. At the tree-level, many of the effects of thinning were as expected. Heavier, low density thinning resulted in significantly larger and deeper …

Soil Amino Acids At Upper Tree Line, Montane And Lower Tree Line, Kelly C. Owens Jan 2009

Soil Amino Acids At Upper Tree Line, Montane And Lower Tree Line, Kelly C. Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The classic view of the nitrogen cycle in soils is for plants to take up inorganic N in solution for N nutrition. More recent studies reveal plants can take up low molecular weight dissolved organic N such as amino acids directly from the soil. In ecosystems where the rate of microbial mineralization is limited, plants may take up 10 to 200 percent more amino acid N than mineral N. It is not known if plants take up amino acids in all ecosystems, however recent research shows that plants generally take up amino acids when they are present in high quantities …

The Effects Of Roads On Space Use And Movements Of Black Bears In Eastern Kentucky, Rebekah A. Jensen Jan 2009

The Effects Of Roads On Space Use And Movements Of Black Bears In Eastern Kentucky, Rebekah A. Jensen

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Kentucky, USA, is the site of recent natural recolonization by the American black bear (Ursus americanus); however, bears are rarely observed outside the Cumberland Mountains along the state‘s southeastern border. I examined the influence of roads in constraining the distribution of this population by altering animal space use and movement. I identified patterns of road avoidance and road crossing using data from Global Positioning System collars worn by 28 adult bears (16M, 12F), and described road mortality trends using 27 roadkill events. Bears avoided roads at the home range and landscape scale, primarily crossed low-traffic roads, and crossed …

Assessing Aspen Using Remote Sensing, Randy Hamilton, Kevin Megown, Jeff Dibenedetto, Dale Bartos, Anne Mikeck Jan 2009

Assessing Aspen Using Remote Sensing, Randy Hamilton, Kevin Megown, Jeff Dibenedetto, Dale Bartos, Anne Mikeck

Aspen Bibliography

Large areas of aspen (Populus tremuloides) have disappeared and continue to disappear from western forests due to successional decline and sudden aspen decline (SAD). This loss of aspen ecosystems negatively impacts watersheds, wildlife, plants, and recreation. Much can still be done to restore aspen if timely and appropriate action is taken. However, land managers often lack fundamental information on the location, quantity, and status of aspen stands. This information is needed to plan, implement, and defend aspen restoration activities, but it is often difficult and costly to obtain. Advances in remote sensing technologies can provide cost-effective ways to obtain spatial …
