Identification Of Potato Y Potyvirus (Pvy^O) Resistance In Wild And Cultivated Tomatoes, Fevzi̇ye Çelebi̇ Toprak, Emi̇nur Barutçu, Anne Frary, Sami̇ Doğanlar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Potato Y potyvirus (PVY) is an important plant pathogen worldwide that infects and causes yield losses in the family Solanaceae including potato (Solanum tuberosum), pepper (Capsicum spp.), tomato (S. lycopersicum), and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). In this study, 20 different tomato accessions representing 6 different species were mechanically inoculated with PVY^O. The plants were scored visually for symptoms and then tested for presence of the virus 2-4 weeks after inoculation by ELISA. The results were variable. Most wild species of tomato sustained PVY^O replication in inoculated leaves. Some of the wild species showed an immune response, while some became systemically infected. …

Investigations On The Pollen Morphology Of Some Fruit Species, Yasemi̇n Evrenosoğlu, Adalet Misirli
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Morphological characters are used to identify plant material. Pollen morphology is an important parameter. This is of great importance in detailed investigations by scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to develop a plant material identification tool, this research was carried out to determine the pollen morphology of some fruit species using SEM on apple, pear, quince, apricot, plum, peach, almond, chestnut, walnut, pomegranate, and persimmon cultivars. The surface features, as well as length, width, and P/E ratio of pollen were observed. Pollen length and width changed with investigated species and cultivars; the longest and widest pollen grains were detected in …

Agronomic Trait Assessment And Selection For Number Of Capsules In Determinate X Indeterminate Crosses Of Sesame, M. İlhan Çağirgan, Selçuk Özerden, M. Onur Özbaş
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Despite the progress, improved determinate (dt/dt) lines of sesame are still low yielding. Further improvement may be achieved by crossing locally adapted indeterminate cultivars with desirable determinates from a broad-based composite population. In order to test this hypothesis, 43 F_2 base populations from these kinds of crosses were generated and a distinct variability among populations was observed for seed yield and other traits. A 20% positive selection for number of capsules as the most yield-related component was applied to the pairs of determinate and indeterminate segregating in each population. Although seed yield per plant, number of capsules per plant and …

Maternal Antibody Transfer And Meningeal Worm Infection Rates In Kentucky Elk, Willie Elwood Bowling
Maternal Antibody Transfer And Meningeal Worm Infection Rates In Kentucky Elk, Willie Elwood Bowling
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Elk (Cervus elaphus) were historically present throughout Kentucky, but were extirpated by the mid 19th century. Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources initiated elk reintroduction efforts in 1997, resulting in a self-sustaining population. I designed this project to study the effects of a parasitic nematode, meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis), on Kentucky’s elk herd. I examined potential maternal transfer of P. tenuis antibodies to elk calves, and investigated the relationship between elk habitat use and meningeal worm infection. I captured neonatal elk in 2004-06, fitted them with VHF transmitters, and collected blood samples for an enzyme-linked …

University of Kentucky Master's Theses
At the Bent Mountain surface mine, Pike County, Kentucky, a study has been ongoing since 2005 to assess the influence of various types of loose-graded mine spoils on water quality and forest establishment. Six research plots consist of two replicates of brown weathered sandstone, gray unweathered sandstone, and mixed brown sandstone, gray sandstone, and shale that were emplaced according to Forestry Reclamation Approach criteria. A series of analyses was initiated in 2007 to examine influence of spoil matrix composition on sulfate and carbonate geochemistry of infiltrated waters, as well as to investigate the occurrence of Phytophthora, a group of …
A Case Study Approach For Assessing Operational And Silvicultural Performance Of Whole-Tree Biomass Harvesting In Maine, Charles E. Coup
A Case Study Approach For Assessing Operational And Silvicultural Performance Of Whole-Tree Biomass Harvesting In Maine, Charles E. Coup
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the Northeastern United States, re-emerging markets for renewable energy are driving interest in increasing the harvest of underutilized biomass material from Maine’s forest. These markets may offer opportunities for forest managers to implement silvicultural treatments that have previously been foregone due to their high cost. However, many operational challenges arise in using current harvesting systems to harvest biomass material profitably while simultaneously achieving silvicultrual objectives. This research uses a case study approach to analyzing some of the possibilities and obstacles in implementing biomass harvesting in Maine. The first three studies investigate a factorial silvicultural and operational case study involving …
Making Biomass Pay: Obstacles And Opportunities, Gail Wells
Making Biomass Pay: Obstacles And Opportunities, Gail Wells
Joint Fire Science Program Digests
Removing hazardous fuels to reduce the risk of wildfire has become a priority for land managers across the United States. Utilizing biomass taken from forests to cover the cost of fuel reduction is an attractive ideal. Effective utilization could also address important national challenges such as improving forest health, increasing domestic energy supplies, reducing carbon emissions, and revitalizing rural economies. However, getting woody biomass from the forest to the consumer is economically and logistically difficult, and efforts to make biomass utilization profitable have been disappointing so far. JFSP-funded researchers have found that, while there is no recipe for building a …

Variability In The Response Of Chickpea Cultivars To Short-Term Salinity, In Terms Of Water Retention Capacity, Membrane Permeability, And Osmo-Protection, Neera Garg, Ranju Singla
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Seedlings of 2 chickpea cultivars (Cicer arietinum L.), salt-tolerant kabuli (CSG 9651) and salt-sensitive desi (DCP 92-3), were raised under control (distilled water) and salinity (EC = 4, 6, and 8 dS m^{-1}) conditions. Salt treatments were applied once symbiosis was well established (i.e. 15 days after sowing [DAS]) and continued until the last sampling stage (i.e. 70 DAS). The experiments were terminated 70 DAS and the plants were analyzed 40 and 70 DAS. Salt stress decreased the relative water content (RWC), membrane stability index (MSI), leaf chlorophyll (CHL), plant biomass, and grain yield, and increased total soluble sugars in …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Midgut hydrolytic enzymes of Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were identified and partially characterized. K_m, V_{max}, optimum pH, and specific activity were determined for proteolytic enzymes and \alpha-amylases. All hydrolytic enzyme activity had an optimum pH value in the alkaline pH range. We observed major serine protease activity, together with minor cysteine-like activity, the former being significantly inhibited by soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) and aprotinin. Moreover, different degrees of inhibition were observed with synthetic protease inhibitors. Electrophoretic methods revealed 3 isozymes of \alpha-amylases, of which 2 had higher molecular weight and were more active than the other. Inhibition of amylolytic …
