Wetlands in the Playa Lakes Region (PLR) provide important habitats for wintering waterfowl, cranes, and both migrant and breeding shorebirds. Playa Lakes Region wetlands experience naturally fluctuating hydroperiods but are exposed to anthropogenic stresses, which are exacerbated during summer and may influence PLR wetland occupancy and selection by breeding shorebirds. We examined wetland-scale habitat use and nest-site selection of the 4 dominant shorebirds (American avocets [Recurvirostra americana], black-necked stilts [Himantopus mexicanus], killdeer [Charadrius vociferus], snowy plovers [C. alexandrinus]) nesting in playas, saline lakes, and in both created and riparian wetlands in the …

Thinning removes trees within a stand to regulate the level of site occupancy and subsequent stand development. Before thinning is applied, foresters determine the amount of residual growing stock, the spatial distribution of the residual trees, and the criteria used to select trees to cut. In this study, a portion of a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantation was surveyed through a complete tree tally with the coordinates of each individual tree recorded. This study was carried out to determine the infection rates of 9 Paecilomyces fumosoroseus isolates and 1 Paecilomyces lilacinus isolate on the glasshouse whitefly (GWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum. Furthermore, the infection progress of P. fumosoroseus was observed on the insect using light and scanning electron microscopes. Bioassays were carried out on second instar nymphs by the application of a spore suspension of each isolate. The mortality data were recorded 3 and 6 days after the application. The effect of Paecilomyces isolates increased as the incubation time was extended. Seven isolates caused significant mortality to the GWF nymphs. The most virulent isolates, …

The developmental time, survival rate and reproduction of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) (Homoptera, Aphididae), were evaluated on detached cabbage leaves (Brassicae oleracea var. capitata) at four constant and two alternating temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 25/30 and 30/35 ºC). Developmental periods of immature stages ranged from 12.5 days at 15 ºC to 6.0 days at 25/30 ºC. The alternating temperature of 30/35 ºC was lethal to immature stages of B. brassicae. The lower developmental threshold for the cabbage aphid was estimated at 4.0 ºC and it required 142.9 degree-days for a first instar to become an adult. The …

This study was conducted to determine the effects of early season drought stress on some plant characteristics of 9 sugar beet genotypes in the Khorasan Agricultural and Natural Resource Research Station, NE Iran. The experimental design was a split plot with a randomized complete block arrangement. Leaf area index, leaf dry weight, shoot dry weight and root dry weight decreased under drought stress compared to non-stress conditions. The decrease was more pronounced as the rate of stress increased. Leaf area index was more affected by water stress than was leaf weight (losses of leaf area indices were 14.1% and 66.6% …

Functional Response Of Two Coccinellid Predators, Scymnus Levaillanti And Cycloneda Sanguinea, To The Cotton Aphid, Aphis Gossypii, Ali̇ Arda Işikber
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Functional responses of 2 female coccinellid predators, Scymnus levaillanti and Cycloneda sanguinea, to the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, at various temperatures were studied under laboratory conditions. Both coccinellid species showed different functional responses to the cotton aphid. The larger species, C. sanguinea, was seen to eat more aphids than the smaller species, S. levaillanti, at each temperature, due to its greater voracity. The female adults of both coccinellid species feed maximally during the first 3 h and therefore, the increase in fresh weight gain and number of aphids killed by both coccinellid species are much higher during the first 3 …

The objectives of this research were to assess genotype-environment (GE) interaction and to determine stable durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var. durum Desf.) genotypes for grain yield in the Central Anatolia. Thirteen durum wheat genotypes were evaluated under rainfed conditions using a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. The study was repeated for 2 years and at 3 different locations around Central Anatolia, Turkey. GE interaction was analyzed using linear regression techniques. A linear quadratic controller based algorithm was developed for simulating the dynamics of a single-reach irrigation canal with a channel junction. Using the concepts of feedback control theory, an expression for an upstream gate opening of an irrigation canal reach with a channel junction operated based upon a constant-level control was obtained. In the derivation, the canal reach between 2 gates was divided into 5 nodes, and the finite difference forms of the continuity and momentum equations were written for each node. The aim of this study was to determine the severity and spatial distribution of boron toxicity symptoms on barley cultivated areas in Central Anatolia and Transitional Zones (CATZs). Boron concentrations of plants sampled from barley cultivated areas of the CATZs region at 189 sites during springs 1996 and 1997 were determined. Boron toxicity symptoms were observed mainly in small areas near Konya-Çumra, Ankara-Gölbaşı, Yenikent and Yozgat-Yerköy and between the provinces of Konya and Aksaray. While boron toxicity symptoms were not observed in 79% of samples, 15% and 6% of samples showed light and medium-severe toxicity symptoms, respectively. As boron toxicity …

Three strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa. Duch.) varieties commercially grown in Israel (Tamar, Yael and Malach) were studied for their volatile compositions. Two techniques were compared: headspace solid phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) and liquid-liquid extraction (organic solvent: tert-butyl methyl ether) by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The influences of techniques on the volatile compounds were tested by comparing the volatiles determined in the 3 varieties. Malach, the most aromatic variety, accumulates high levels of furanones and esters compared to the other varieties. This paper assesses the real option values of farmland using data from Ohio, USA. The option value of delaying the sale of a farm property was measured using an emerging, relatively new theory namely, the theory of real options pricing. As opposed to standard corporate finance theory, this new theory incorporates both the uncertainty about the future net benefits of a selling decision and the irreversibility of this action taken. Results from this option value calculation show that the vast majority of real call option values calculated for this sample are greater than zero, suggesting that deferring the decision to …

The experiments, involving 25 sunflower hybrids, were conducted in 3 locations in 2000 and 2001. These hybrids were evaluated for 4 important yield components (seed and oil yields, oil content and hull ratio) by combining ability. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Based on specific combining ability (SCA) analysis, the hybrid 2453-A x 2644-R was determined as the best hybrid in the experiment. Cereals are sensitive to micronutrient problems. Central Anatolian soils show great variation with respect to both deficiency and toxicity of boron (B). This state-of-knowledge review about the effects of fire on soils and water can assist land and fire managers with information on the physical, chemical, and biological effects of fire needed to successfully conduct ecosystem management, and effectively inform others about the role and impacts of wildland fire. Chapter topics include the soil resource, soil physical properties and fire, soil chemistry effects, soil biology responses, the hydrologic cycle and water resources, water quality, aquatic biology, fire effects on wetland and riparian systems, fire effects models, and watershed rehabilitation.

Nebraska's Landscape Tree Information
Black Locust (Robinia psuedoacacia), once a native to the southern Appalachian region of the eastern United States, has now spread throughout most of the world. It can be found along the Missouri River corridor in Nebraska and has moved a little to the west. It is an aggressive and rapidly growing tree where growing conditions are good. Black Locust has been used in the east for erosion control in road cuts, abandoned fields, and strip mined areas. The tree colonizes by seeds and it also suckers from roots.

Antioxidant Activity Of Selected Fruits And Vegetables Grown In Turkey, Feryal Karadeni̇z, Hande Selen Burdurlu, Nuray Koca, Yeşi̇m Soyer

Antioxidant activities of different fruits (apple, quince, grape, pear and pomegranate) and vegetables (potato, onion, spring onion, red radish and red cabbage) were determined. In addition, total phenolic and flavonoid contents of those samples were assessed. Among fruits, pomegranate had the highest (62.7%) antioxidant activity, followed by quince (60.4%), grape (26.6%), apple (25.7%) and pear (13.7%). The antioxidant activity of vegetables ranged from 40.8% (red cabbage) to 12.5% (onion). Total phenolic and flavonoid contents in fruits varied from 326 to 4306 mg of catechin kg^{-1} and from 282 to 2115 mg of catechin kg^{-1}, respectively. Those in vegetables ranged between …

The effect of the number of blades and the abrasive grain size of sandpaper on the surface roughness in wood materials obtained from Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra L.) and European black pine (Pinus nigra A.) were examined. A total of 220 samples were prepared for this purpose. The samples were subjected to roughness measurements according to TS 6212 EN ISO 4288. The values obtained were statistically analyzed and the results were interpreted. Hemidactylus tucrius is a small gekkonid lizard native to the Middle East and Asia that is known to exhibit sexual dimorphism in head size. Several potential explanations exist for the evolution and maintenance of sexual dimorphism in lizards. We tested 2 of these competing hypotheses concerning diet partitioning and differential growth. We found no differences in Average meal size (volume) or in any single dimension of prey size for similarly sized males and females. allometric patterns of increases in head size also were measured in males and females. The Conservation Security Program (CSP) is a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance to promote the conservation and improvement of soil, water, air, energy, plant and animal life, and other conservation purposes on tribal and private working lands. Working lands include cropland, grassland, prairie land, improved pasture, and rangeland, as well as forested land that is an incidental part of an agriculture operation. In the first sign-up, CSP was offered in 18 watersheds located in 22 states. In 2005, the program is available in all 50 states, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Basin. Economic analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of initial planting density on the profitability of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) on nonindustrial private forestland (NIPF) in East Texas. Five planting densities of 870, 725, 620, 540, and 484 trees per acre (tpa) representing spacings of 510, 610, 710, 810, and 910 ft, respectively, were investigated. Land expectation values were used to determine the financially optimal thinning and final harvesting schedules (including rotation length and the timing, frequency, and intensity of thinning). Social behavior of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) can have important management implications.
The formation of matrilineal social groups among female deer has been documented and management strategies have been proposed based on this well-developed social structure. A 2-year-old pine plantation was selected to receive treatments of fertilizers and herbicides to evaluate effects on Nantucket pine tip moth infestations and the tree growthparameters of height, diameter and volume increment. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, and hexazinone and sulfometuron methyl herbicides were used in creating six treatments: (i) control; (ii) phosphorus; (iii) nitrogen and phosphorus; (iv) phosphorus and herbicide; (v) nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide; and (vi) herbicide. Treatments were applied in 1987 and 1988. In 1987, trees treated with nitrogen, phosphorus and herbicide had significantly greater height, diameter and volume growth than trees not receiving fertilizer treatments, but did …

This case study is #3 in a series of studies that relate specifically to the development and application of lean manufacturing techniques for the furniture and wood component supplying industries. Case study #3 is an example of how productivity can be increased in a furniture manufacturing organization by using flow-line technology.
This case study provides information about lean manufacturing and how a lean manufacturing system can be implemented, followed by a detailed case study of a wood component manufacturing company’s adoption of a new flow-line technology based on lean manufacturing concepts.
