Passage of the Clean Water Act (CWA) of 1972 prompted states to invest significant resources to develop programs to control nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from forestry and other activities. Forestry-related agencies and organizations have since developed silvicultural best management practice (BMP) guidelines to reduce NPS pollution, maintain stream integrity, and meet state water quality standards. To determine the effectiveness and implementation level of best management practices (BMP) on public and private forestland, states further developed and implemented their BMP compliance monitoring programs. In 2002, eight pigment samples were collected from three rock art sites in the Big Belt Mountains of west central Montana. Samples from Hellgate Gulch (24BW9), Avalanche Mouth (24BW19), and the Gates of the Mountains (24LC27) were dated using plasma-chemical extraction and accelerator mass spectrometry. The dates were statistically indistinguishable with ages of 1170 ± 45, 1225 ± 50, and 1280 ± 50 B.P. When calibrated, these ages range from 650 to 990 cal A.D. The Lymantria Dispar Nucleopolyhedrovirus Enhancins Are Components Of Occlusion-Derived Virus, James M. Slavicek, Holly J.R. Popham

Enhancins are metalloproteinases, first identified in granuloviruses, that can enhance nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) potency. We had previously identified two enhancin genes (E1 and E2) in the Lymantria dispar multinucleocapsid NPV (LdMNPV) and showed that both were functional. For this study, we have extended our analysis of LdMNPV enhancin genes through an immunocytochemical analysis of E1 and E2 expression and localization. E1 and E2 peptide antibodies recognized proteins of 84 kDa and 90 kDa, respectively, on Western blots of extracts from L. dispar 652Y cells infected with wild-type virus. Influence Of Salinity On Growth And Yield Attributes In Chickpea Cultivars, Ranju Singla, Neera Garg

Seeds of 4 cultivars of chickpea (2 desi, CSG 8962 and DCP 92-3, and 2 kabuli, CSG 9651 and BG 267) were grown under 0, 4, 6 and 8 dS m^{-1} levels of salinity until maturity. Shoot and root dry weights, root shoot ratio and various yield parameters were evaluated under salinity at 40, 70 and 100 days after sowing. Salinity significantly reduced dry matter accumulation in both roots and shoots in all cultivars, though declension was more pronounced in BG 267 (kabuli) and DCP 92-3 (desi). The effects of salt and drought stresses at the water potentials of -2, -4, -6 and -8 bars induced by NaCl and PEG 6000 (polyethylene glycol 6000) each, on germination and early seedling growth, were investigated for 3 pea cultivars (Bolero, Sprinter and Utrillo). Electrical conductivity (EC) values of the NaCl solutions were 4.5, 8.8, 12.7 and 16.3 dS m^{-1}. Apple Chlorotic Leaf Spot Virus (Aclsv) Status In Turkey And Sensitive Detection Using Advanced Techniques, Çi̇ğdem Ulubaş Serçe, Fi̇li̇z Ertunç

The prevalence of apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) was investigated in all the main stone fruit growing areas of Turkey except for East Anatolia. Three hundred and sixty-nine plant samples showing virus related symptoms were collected from sweet and sour cherry, peach, nectarine, apricot and plum trees. All samples were tested using DAS-ELISA and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Thirteen samples were detected as infected with ACLSV using ELISA while RT-PCR revealed 51 positive samples. The potential of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acarina: Phytoseiidae) to control the carmine spider mite Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acarina: Tetranychidae) on strawberries (cv. ´Camarosa`) grown under plastic tunnels was investigated in 2 fields during the 2001 and 2002 growing seasons in Aydın, Turkey. Three study plots, grower's practice, chemical control and biological control, were established. The population of T. cinnabarinus was controlled in the grower's practice plots by using 1 or 2 acaricide applications. Two olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars, Leccino and Barnea, were exposed to increasing concentrations of NaCl (control, 2560, 5120 and 7680 mg l^{-1} of NaCl, which is equal to 4.0 dS m^{-1}, 8.0 dS m^{-1} and 12.0 dS m^{-1} salinity) in a sand culture. Plants were harvested and separated into different organs. Thin root, thick root, shoot and leaves were analysed for Na^+, Cl^-, K^+, Ca^{+2} and Mg^{+2} contents. Dry weights of the plants were determined. Shoot elongation was also measured. Increasing NaCl inhibited growth of the plants. However, this effect was only statistically significant in Barnea. Methods known as regional flood frequency analyses have often been used for providing records to be gathered and for determining different quantiles of flood in basins having an adequate runoff gauging station (RS) or no gauge. Regional flood frequency analyses including homogeneity test was applied to annual instantaneous peak flows of 50 RSs in 4 basins of the East Mediterranean region. Caucasian fir (Abies nordmanniana (Link.) Spach.) was treated using the full-cell process with heated tanalith-C at elevated temperatures from 5 to 70 ºC above and below the fibre saturation point (FSP: 32.1%) (in 40% and 20% moisture content (MC) levels). Thermal treatability was determined on the basis of preservative uptake (the percentage of void volume filled, VVF%) in transverse flow (a combination of tangential and radial directions) and triplex flow (based on all 3 flow directions). The effects of stratification, temperature and storage on seed germination performance were investigated in 3 provenances of Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa seeds. In the first study, seeds were subjected to 9 different periods of cold stratification or warm stratification followed by cold stratification to overcome dormancy. Stratification and provenances affected seed germination percentage (GP) and germination value (GV) when seeds were germinated in darkness at 30/20 ºC. In the southeastern United States prescription burning, fire danger rating and wildfire suppression strategies are constrained by limited knowledge of the influence of moisture content in live vegetation, organic soils, water table and weather. The interactive influence of these factors on fire behavior is not well studied. As a result of this most recent SPB epidemic (1999-2003), thousands of hectares of dead pine trees have created wildfire-hazard conditions in the southern Appalachians. One of the challenges for land managers is how to return fire to these ecosystems after (1) nearly a decade of exclusion, and (2) the more recent SPB mortality enhanced fuel loads. Higher fuel loads have the potential to increase fire intensity and severity. At the extremes, fires of high intensity and severity can have a large effect on ecosystem structure and function. Application of herbicide to reduce competing brush and hardwood species is a common silvicultural activity in young loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) stands. A reduction in competition generally increases the amount of available resources to the loblolly pine crop trees thereby increasing foliage biomass, fascicle dimensions, and foliar nutrient concentrations. To what extent herbicide application and competition control alters these foliar characteristics in mid-rotation stands has rarely been reported. Although forests provide a wide variety of products and services, timber still continues to be the most valued forest product in the marketplace. More than two-third of the nation's forests are under private control, some are owned by industries (about 10%) while a much larger portion (about 59%) is owned by individuals. This study investigates the differences between timber sales offered by industrial and non-industrial ownerships. A test of means revealed that there is a significant difference between per hectare bid for these 2 types of sales. Foliar blight is a major biotic constraint to wheat in the Gangetic plains of south Asia, particularly in the rice-wheat system. The disease occurs as a complex of spot blotch and tan spot caused by C. sativus and P. tritici-repentis, respectively. Yield losses reach on average 15% but are variable depending on sowing time, years, locations and stress conditions. Resistance breeding has been the cornerstone of the control strategy. Considerable progress has been witnessed in breeding, especially with the selection of winter wheat genotypes with better adaptability to different technological systems in multifunctional agricultural production. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the most important oil crops in the world due to its excellent oil quality. This research was conducted to evaluate changes in the contents of oil, fatty acids and total tocopherol of sunflower seeds obtained from different maturity stages and positions on the head. The heads were harvested sequentially 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 days after flowering (DAF) in 2002 and 2003. In this study, the effects of some physical and chemical soil properties on the growth of hybrid poplar were investigated in the Terme-Gölardı region where a poor growth of trees was observed. Soil samples were taken from both poor and good growth areas. Chemical soil properties such as pH, exchangeable Na^+, K^+, Ca^{++} and Mg^{++} content, CEC, phosphorus content and salinity were determined. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of mimosa bark usage on the formaldehyde emission, physical and mechanical properties of particleboard. Fifteen panels from black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) wood containing mimosa bark in a core layer at different ratios were manufactured. Three boards without bark addition were produced as control boards. Formaldehyde emission, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, internal bond strength and thickness swelling of the specimens were tested. The decomposition of spruce, beech and mixed litters of spruce and beech was investigated over 3.5 years in beech, spruce and mixed (beech/spruce) stands using less than 1.5 mm mesh litter bags. Initially, carbon, nitrogen, lignin and cellulose concentrations, and C:N and lignin:N ratios were determined in beech and spruce litters. For all sampling intervals, mixed litters showed higher decay rates than individual beech and spruce litters in both pure stands and mixed stands. Spruce decomposed more rapidly than beech, and initial lignin concentration explained most of the variation in decomposition rates between beech and spruce. However, differences in decomposition …

It is understood today that crop losses occurring during these periods have an impact on crop cost and a negative effect on profit. The generalized Pareto distribution, which is a special case of both exponential and Wakeby distribution, has good potential for the analysis of flood peaks because of its inherent properties. In this paper, the parameter estimation methods of the moments, probability-weighted moments, maximum likelihood, principle of maximum entropy, and least squares to estimate the parameters in the three-parameter generalized Pareto distribution are compared. The usefulness and applicability of each method is discussed by application to observed annual discharge data for 50 different rivers, most of them in Turkey. The main objective of this study was to determine the soil erosion risk in Gölbaşı Environmental Protection Area and its vicinity using the CORINE model. The model consists of 6 steps, each of which using different overlaying combinations of soil texture, depth, stoniness, climatic data, land use and land cover information. In the first step, soil texture, depth and stoniness layers were extracted from a 1:25,000 scaled digital soil map and overlaid to form a soil erodibility map. The effects of morphological characteristics on seedling performance were studied in Cedrus libani seedlings at 3 locations in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey. Some 2+0 seedlings were morphologically graded according to height and root collar diameter sizes. The seedlings were divided into 5 height categories and each height category was divided into small and large root collar diameter subcategories. The morphologically graded seedlings were planted at 3 locations. After 5 growing seasons, the mean survival of the seedlings planted in Ankara, Eskişehir and Konya locations was 84.4%, 77.9% and 54.7%, respectively. The mean height of seedlings planted in Ankara, …
