Successful design of agroforestry practices hinges on the ability to pull together very diverse and sometimes large sets of information (i.e., biophysical, economic and social factors), and then implementing the synthesis of this information across several spatial scales from site to landscape. Agroforestry, by its very nature, creates complex systems with impacts ranging from the site or practice level up to the landscape and beyond. Computer-based Decision Support Tools (DST) help to integrate information to facilitate the decision-making process that directs development, acceptance, adoption, and management aspects in agroforestry. The amount of forestland in east Texas has been estimated at 11.8 million acres, with approximately 2.5 million acres classified as pine plantations. The majority ofthese plantations are owned by forest industry (71 percent), while non-industrial private forest landowners represent the next largest shareholder (23 percent). Pine plantations are typically managed to produce timber, so information is needed to make informed management decisions. Growth is one piece of information that managers often rely upon in their decision-making process.

Linerboards are used for making corrugated boards. The paperboards can be strengthened by adding strength additives at the wet-end of the paper machine and also by sizing them. Impregnation is another effective approach of strengthening the paperboards, mostly offline. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the performance of the modified Dixon coater and check the operating conditions with various chemicals used for impregnating 42 lb/1000 sq.ft grammage linerboard.

In order to manage special provisions in U.S. wilderness, several research products are needed. Minimally, a complete understanding of the legislative intent of the provision, in-depth understanding of the deep meanings held by the particular stakeholder community of interest, and some knowledge about the larger population of interest are needed. In this study of jet boat use on the Salmon River in the Frank Church– River of No Return Wilderness, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods were used to understand the attachment jet boat users have to the activity and the place.

Large mammal populations theoretically are best conserved in landscapes where large protected areas are surrounded by buffer zones, connected by corridors, and integrated into a greater ecosystem. Multi-use buffer zones, including those containing complex agroforestry systems, are promoted as one strategy to provide both economic benefits to people and conservation benefits to wildlife. We use the island of Sumatra, Indonesia to explore the benefits and limitations of this strategy. We conclude that conservation benefits are accrued by expanding the habitat available for large mammals but more attention needs to be focused on how to reduce and respond to human–wildlife conflict …

Fusiform rust ( Cronartium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme) infection rates in East Texas increased to nearly 50 percent in slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) and about 15 percent in loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda L.) plantations during the 18-year period from 1969 to 1987. New data from the East Texas Pine Plantation Research Project showed that fusiform rust infection rates in slash pine stabilized around 20 - 30 percent after 1987, then decreased to about 15 percent by 2002. For loblolly pine, the rates stabilized around 10 percent after 1987, then decreased to around 5 percent …

The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of fertilizer and understory vegetation control (herbicide and prescribed fire) on mature tree physiology and to link observed physiological responses with tree growth. Photosynthetic rate (photosynthesis), transpiration, stomatal conductance, stem diameter, and crown area were measured in two midrotation loblolly pine plantations in East Texas. Rates of photosynthesis, E and gs for the midsummer measurements were significantly reduced by fertilizer treatments on both sites. Six tests were established comparing the herbaceous weed control (HWC) and resultant loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedling performance from treatments of Oustar (0, 10, 13, 16, 19 ounces product acre-1), and industry standards (Velpar L+Oust 32+2; Arsenal+Oust 4+2 both in ounces product acre-1). Sites were prepared prior to planting with: burn only, chemical only, mechanical only, or mechanical and chemical methods. Oustar (13 ounces) and industry standards provided similar weed control and seedling performance. The low rate (10 ounces) of Oustar applied to sandy loam soils receiving chemical preparation and plowing prior to planting provided bareground comparable to industry …

Populations of the red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) have experienced massive declines since European colonization of North America. This is due to extensive habitat loss and alteration. Logging of old-growth pine forests and alteration of the fire regime throughout the historic range of the species were the primary causes of population decline. Listing of the red-cockaded woodpecker under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, and increased emphasis on management of non-game species have resulted in efforts to recover remnant populations of the red-cockaded woodpecker in many parts of its historic range. Red-cockaded woodpecker populations declined precipitously following European settlement and expansion and cutting of the original pine forests across the southeastern United States. By 1990 most residual populations lacked demographic viability, existed in degraded habitat, and were isolated from other populations. The primary causes of this situation were harvest of the original pine forests of the southeastern United States, conversion of forested lands to other uses, short-rotation silvicultural practices, and alteration of the fire regime in the regenerated forests. As social and legal mandates changed, management of red-cockaded woodpeckers became a higher priority. Intensive management for red-cockaded woodpeckers is currently practiced …

Timber production has been one of the most important industries in east Texas since the mid 19th century. For over 100 years, timber has represented one-third of all agricultural income in this region. In order to review forest landscape changes over time -- resulting from many years of management and investment -- historical satellite remote sensing data from 1974 to 2002 were used to determine landscape patterns and changes in four counties of east Texas : Angelina, Nacogdoches , San Augustine, and Shelby . Turkey has 22,000 ha of greenhouse area, and about 51% of vegetable greenhouses are used for tomato production. In Mediterranean countries generally greenhouses are not regularly heated at optimal levels. Fruity vegetables in winter have a problem of insufficient pollination due to low temperatures and isolated atmosphere. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) pollination in tomato production in anti-frost heated greenhouses in the Mediterranean basin. Determination Of Sowing Dates Of Sweet Corn (Zea Mays L. Saccharata Sturt.) Under Şanlıurfa Conditions, Abdullah Öktem, A. Gülgün Öktem, Yalçin Coşkun

This study was conducted to determine optimum sowing dates for sweet corn in the Southeastern Anatolia region. The research was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station of Harran University in Şanlıurfa during 2000 and 2001. Sowing dates were April 25, May 10, May 25, June 10, June 25, July 10, July 25 and August 10. Based on the sowing dates, fresh ear yield, duration of tasseling, ear diameter, kernel numbers per ear, single fresh ear weight and husk ratio parameters were statistically significant (**P < 0.01) in both years. The highest fresh ear yields were 177.51 and 172.30 kg ha^{-1} for the 25 July sowing date in 2000 and 2001, respectively. The lowest fresh ear yields were 18.24 and 15.53 kg ha^{-1} for the April 25 sowing date in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Fresh ear yield decreased with early sowing dates (from April 25 to June 25) in both years. The results indicate that optimal sowing dates for sweet corn could be from June 25 to July 25 in Şanlıurfa and similar Southeastern Anatolia regions.

Furrow infiltration varies with different variables and is a complex process for modeling infiltration over the field. This research was conducted to develop empirical relationships between field-wide furrow infiltration and independent variables such as the opportunity time, initial soil water content, flow depth, flow section area, wetted perimeter and wet bulk density. Furrow infiltration was measured by blocked furrow infiltrometers at 48 infiltration sites over a 70 x 130 m field plot. Simple and partial correlations between cumulative infiltration and independent variables were evaluated. This paper presents a prediction model developed using dimensional analysis for friction losses in drip irrigation laterals. Drip irrigation laterals with cylindrical type in-line emitters placed at different spacings ranging from 0.2 to 1 m were considered. The parameters affecting the variation in friction losses in laterals were defined as dimensionless terms using Buckingham's pi theorem. In order to develop a model, experimental friction loss data from 14 different drip irrigation pipes, and some domestic and some imported ones with the above-mentioned spacings were used. The model developed in this study accounted for 98.7% of the variation in the data. …

The objectives of this study were to compare the modulus of elasticity, bending strength, shear strength and formaldehyde emissions of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) bonded with melamine added urea formaldehyde resin (UF+M) and produced with other resins such as urea-formaldehyde (UF), melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) and phenol formaldehyde (PF), and to determine the effects of 2 different climate conditions on the bending strength and modulus of elasticity of pine LVL panels. Sugar beet is an important crop in terms of production value and represents 2.5% of the total value of crop production. Its production has been regulated and supported by the government. To adapt Turkey's sugar policies for potential admission to the EU, a sugar production quota policy was implemented in 1999 in addition to existing policies, mainly including price support and input subsidies. In this work, a number of handsheets made from unbeaten and unbleached kraft, refiner mechanical and cotton linter pulps and crack propagations on paper samples under monotonic loading, were analyzed and possible links with the properties of fibrous networks were investigated. Crack initiation and propagation on the tested paper strips were also investigated under a scanning electron microscope to determine visually the state of the paper matrix under applied loads. A risk-programming model was developed to evaluate the tradeoffs between risk and expected returns for farms along the Kızılırmak River in North Central Anatolia. Risk efficient farm structures were derived for representative farms by using minimization of the absolute deviation procedures, which permit the estimation of a farm's risk-return frontier. Research results reveal that farm plans are sensitive to the risk criteria in the research area. Rice and maize are the most high-risk activities, followed by lettuce and soybean. Wheat, sugar beet and dairy activities have a more stabilizing effect on farm income compared to others. Medium size and large …

Nebraska pioneers built their homes with materials that were locally available. The prairie often dictated the use of sod. However, logs were generally used when trees were available. Today, logs are used in construction of country homes, vacation cabins, and hunting lodges despite modern construction materials. Log construction is aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient.

Purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria, is a member of the Loosestrife family (Lythraceae). It is a large, perennial, wetland plant that can grow up to 9 feet (3 m) tall. It was introduced to the northeastern United States and Canada in the 1800s from Europe, probably as seed contained in soil used as ship’s ballast. It was also brought to North America for ornamental and medicinal purposes.

Partial brood loss in red-cockaded woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) was studied during 2 breeding seasons in eastern Texas. The timing of partial brood loss, group size, number of initial nestlings, number of birds fledged, and habitat characteristics of the group's cavity-tree cluster were examined for 37 woodpecker groups in loblolly- (Pinus taeda) shortleaf (P. echinata) pine habitat and 14 groups in longleaf (P palustris) pine habitat. Partial brood loss occurred slightly more in the loblolly-shortleaf pine habitat than in the longleaf pine habitat, largely because nests in loblolly-shortleaf habitat initially contained more nestlings. …
