Chromosome Association In Allotetraploid Interspecific Hybrid Ryegrass And Parental Species, Bi̇lal Deni̇z

This study was carried out in glasshouse conditions in summer 2000. Metaphase I (MI) chromosome association and numbers of chromosome arms bound were studied in autotetraploid perennial (Lolium perenne L.) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and their interspecific hybrid plants (Lolium hybridum). In addition, the relationships among different cytological characteristics with respect to meiotic regularity were determined. Chromosome associations at MI were often regular in the parent species and hybrid ryegrass plants however different pairing irregularities were found to be higher in perennial and especially in hybrid ryegrass plants than in the annual ryegrass plant genotypes. The objective of this study was to determine the most suitable saturated hydraulic conductivity (K) values as input into DRAINMOD among a range of K data sets developed for the drainage experiment site in North Central Ohio using seven different K estimation methods. The K methods evaluated were monolith, core, auger-hole, MUUF soil database, and using the Hooghoudt, Kirkham, and van Schilfgaarde equations with water table drawdown and drainage discharge data. Simulations using DRAINMOD (Version 4.6) were conducted for the years 1962-1964 and 1967-1971, and runoff and drain discharge predictions were compared with measured discharges. The objective of the work presented in this paper was to simulate drain flow into subsurface drainage pipes for a layered soil profile using a finite element based HYDRUS-2D model. Data from the drainage experiment in North Central Ohio were used as input to the model. Studies were conducted to determine the ability of the model to predict drain discharge-water table elevation relationships. The model was also used to evaluate the effect of backfill on drain discharge-water table elevation relationships. The recreational use value of Kursunlu Waterfall Nature Park in the Antalya province of Turkey was studied by using the Individual Travel Cost Method (ITCM). For this purpose, 500 on-site questionnaires were administered between September 1998 and June 1999. By applying certain criteria to these questionnaires, 280 cases were selected for economic analysis. In small fruit species, like the mandarin, fruit size is lower in Turkey than in other countries and this has a negative effect on their marketing. Effects Of Pruning Treatments On The Yield And Fruit Quality Of Precoce De Tyrinthe Apricot Cultivar, Levent Son, Ali̇ Küden

This study was carried out to determine the effects of pruning on the yield, fruit quality and phenological aspects of three year-old trees of the Precoce de Tyrinthe apricot cultivar grown in Mut-Mersin. In the first experimental year, unpruned trees were found to be more productive; however, these trees gave lower yields (6.5 kg/tree) in the second year due to alternate bearing. August+winter (12.0 kg/tree), July+winter (10.4 kg/tree), and September+winter (10.1 kg/tree) pruning applications were more productive than control trees (6.50 kg/tree). This study was conducted to (i) determine the effect of tobacco waste application on the soil structure stability (SS), hydraulic conductivity (HC), bulk density, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), and electrolyte concentration of alkaline soils, and (ii) observe the possibility of using tobacco waste for the reclamation of alkaline soils. The main purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the farmers' adoption behaviour in adopting land consolidation implemented in Güzelbeyli town in Zile county, Tokat province. Chi-square analysis was performed to determine whether a difference existed between the farmers who adopted and did not adopt the land consolidation. The results of the analysis indicated that there were some factors affecting the adoption of land consolidation such as farmers' social participation level and their level of awareness about land consolidation. The aim of this study was to determine some mechanical properties (compression, static bending, impact bending and shear strengths) of Eastern beech wood (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) and to compare with them other beech species. In the tests, randomly selected logs taken from the trunk 2-4 m height were obtained from trees naturally growing in Andırın (Northeastern Mediterranean region) and these logs were prepared and tested according to Turkish standards. The results showed that the mean compression strength was 606 kgcm^{-2}, static bending strength 1204 kgcm^{-2}, impact bending strength 0.85 kgmcm^{-2} and shear strength 99 kgcm^{-2}. The Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model and the Agricultural Non-Point-Source Pollution Model (AGNPS) were used in conjunction with a geographic information system (GIS) database to predict runoff and sediment discharges for Rock Creek watershed, an agricultural watershed in Ohio, USA. Observed and predicted values were compared for selected storm events in 1988 and 1990. The statistical evaluation of the WEPP and AGNPS models showed that WEPP predicted average runoff, peak runoff and sediment yield better than AGNPS. WEPP and AGNPS overpredicted peak runoff rates compared to observed data by 15.5% and 26.5%, respectively. The t-test showed that there was …

Additive Main Effects And Multiplicative Interactions Analysis Of Yield Performances In Bread Wheat Genotypes Across Environments, Yüksel Kaya, Çeti̇n Palta, Seyfi̇ Taner

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was carried out to determine the yield performances of 20 bread wheat genotypes across six environments in Central Anatolia, Turkey, in the 2000-2001 growing season. The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design with four replications. Additive main effects and multiplicative interactions analysis (AMMI) indicated that the yield performances of genotypes were under the major environmental effects of genotype by environmental interactions. The first two principal component axes (PCA 1 and 2) were significant (p < 0.01) and cumulatively contributed to 78.64% of the total genotype by environment interaction. A biplot generated using genotypic and environmental scores of the first two AMMI components also showed that genotypes with larger PCA 1 and lower PCA 2 scores gave high yields (stable genotypes), and genotypes with lower PCA 1 and larger PCA 2 scores had low yields (unstable genotypes), as in the sites tested.

The seasonal changes in total carbohydrate, fructose, glucose and sucrose levels of bark tissues of the Tombul, Palaz, Kalınkara, Çakıldak and Sivri cultivars grown in the East and West Black Sea regions were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). As with other fruit species, carbohydrate levels decreased from the end of spring to summer, showed steady changes with low values in summer and increased starting in the middle of fall until winter. This experiment was carried out to determine the yield and oil contents of jojoba populations that were derived from a base population raised from seed in Antalya between 1999 and 2001. In the first year 59 types were evaluated, and 19 promising types were determined. In the second and third years experiments were conducted on these 19 types. Chilling, insect and disease damage was not seen during the experiment periods. However, some plants were dead where water ponded after heavy rains. Restoration efforts and ecologically based management practices for Atlantic white cedar wetlands have recently focused on soil organic matter sequestration and aggradation as critical ecosystem functions in the maintenance of this imperiled community type. This work addresses how developmental stage, litter quality and environmental conditions influenced above ground leaf litter and below ground root decay in naturally regenerating and restored Atlantic white cedar wetlands. The New Environmental Law: Forest Certification, Errol E. Meidinger

This paper argues that the rapidly expanding practice of forest certification, together with similar developments in other sectors, is creating a new template for environmental law. Nongovernmental organizations and some industry actors are establishing binding regulatory standards, systems for monitoring compliance, sanctions for non-compliance, and, when things work well, methods for assessment and revision. It locates these developments as a part of “phase 3” of environmental law, which also involves a proliferation of other initiatives beyond traditional regulation. Finally, it offers a preliminary discussion of the efficacy, adaptability, coherence, and legitimacy of the emergent system.

Today, we have recreated the range wars, using less violent, twentyfirst century means, but involving equally passionate views and similarly implacable foes. While some advocates vigorously defend a historic land use, others argue with increasing vehemence for sharp reductions-or even a complete cessation-of such uses, dismissing an entire lifestyle as nihilistic. In the face of such apparently intractable antagonism, some have predicted, with unseemly enthusiasm, the eventual sunset of federal land grazing. Others have advanced the seemingly enlightened idea of buying federal grazing leases as a better approach to improving publicly-owned range habitats.

Cypress spurge (Euphorbia cyparissias L.) is a herbaceous European perennial introduced into North America as an ornamental plant in the 1860s (Croizat, 1945). It was widely planted in graveyards and often is called graveyard weed (Muenscher, 1936). The plant escaped cultivation and became established on open ground, particularly in pastures (Stuckey and Pearson, 1973).
