Eleven lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) populations originating from different sources in Turkey and European countries were investigated in two ecologically different locations, Menemen and Bozdağ, in the Aegean region of Turkey over three years to determine the populations having high quality and yield. There were significant variations between locations, years and populations in terms of yield and quality characters. The ecology was highly suitable in Menemen for growing lemon balm successfully and almost all yield and quality characters in Menemen were significantly higher than those in Bozdağ. Crystalline Structure Properties Of Bleached And Unbleached Wheat Straw (Triticum Aestivum L.) Soda-Oxygen Pulp, Esat Gümüşkaya, Mustafa Usta

In this study, the crystallinity index and crystallite size of wheat straw powder, soda-oxygen pulp and soda oxygen pulp bleached with hypochlorite (H) and hypochlorite and peroxide (HP) sequences were determined using an x-ray diffractometer method. The crystallinity indexes of these pulp samples were found to be 45.61%, 52.00%, 52.60% and 54.11%, respectively. The crystallite sizes of these pulp samples were also determined and were 6.4 nm, 3.4 nm, 4.3 nm and 4.6 nm, respectively. On the other hand, the crystallinity index and crystallite size of holocellulose, cellulose and alpha-cellulose in wheat straw were then found to be 65.00%, 55.20% …

This study was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Çukurova University in spring 1999 and 2000. In the study, 46 doubled haploid lines produced by irradiated pollen technique and 10 original diploid genotypes were used as plant materials. To investigate inbreeding depression in melons, doubled haploid lines and original diploid parental lines were compared with regard to plant vigor, yield and quality. Fragments containing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal rDNA were amplified from Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica, M. arenaria and M. hapla by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Only digestion of the ITS region with the enzyme RsaI significantly distinguished M. hapla from other species, while other enzymes, EcoRI and BamHI, were not effective in distinguishing these nematode species. PCR was also done with mitocondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers for species discrimination. The obtained amplification product of 600 bp was digested with HinfI restriction endonuclease allowing discrimination among the four root-knot species. mtDNA was found to be a useful tool for discriminating between …

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different organic residues (OR) (e.g., wheat straw corn straw and tobacco residues) on nitrogen mineralization and denitrification loss (N_2O-N) using application rates recommended to local farmers. Nitrate and ammonium analyses were carried out on periodically collected soil samples. In-situ denitrification loss was determined using the acetylene inhibition technique (AIT). The results revealed that OR application increased N mineralization significantly. In the favorable conditions for nitrification and intensive mineralization period, NO_3^--N accumulation at 0-60 cm depth peaked at 163.0, 177.7 and 226.6 kg N ha^{-1} in plots with wheat straw, corn …

A lysimeter study was conducted to determine the evapotranspiration (ET) rates of Red Sunset red maple (Acer Rubrum 'Red Sunset') nursery trees under outdoor conditions in August and September 1997. The average ET rate was 0.084 mm day^{-1}. This measured ET rate was compared with calculated ET rates based on four physical ET (i.e., Penman, Penman-Monteith, Stanghellini and Fynn) and two empirically determined ET models (vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and solar radiation based empirical ET models). The Penman-Monteith and Penman models overestimated the measured ET rate by 15% and 31%, respectively while the Stanghellini and Fynn models underestimated the measured …

The relationships between aerodynamic properties such as vacuum pressure and suction speed and the fiber and physio-mechanical properties of cotton during harvesting were determined by using the Nazilli 84 cotton variety. Aerodynamic properties such as vacuum pressure and suction speed and physio-mechanical properties such as wet and dry lock masses, lock moisture, number of seeds per lock, carpel openness, carpel depth, carpel angle and force of lock break-off were measured. In addition fiber length, fiber strength, fiber elongation and fiber fineness were determined. Clearcutting is a common harvesting practice in many eastern hardwood forests. Among the vegetation strata of these forests, the herbaceous layer is potentially the most sensitive in its response to harvest-mediated disturbances and has the highest species diversity. Thus, it is important to understand the response of herbaceous layer diversity to forest harvesting. Previous work on clearcut and mature stands at the Fernow Experimental Forest (FEF), West Virginia, has shown that, although, harvesting did not alter appreciably herbaceous layer cover, it influenced the relationship of cover to biotic and abiotic factors, such as tree density and soil nutrients, respectively. White spruce and trembling aspen are two important commercial species in British Columbia. They often grow in association, particularly in the Boreal White and Black Spruce and Sub-Boreal Spruce biogeoclimatic zones. Site index conversion equations are useful for estimating the site index of one species from the site index of another species. This study fills a need for site index conversion equations for mixed spruce/aspen stands. Seventy 0.01 ha study plots were established in mixed spruce/aspen stands. Forest overstory composition influences both light and nutrient availability in the mixed boreal forest. The influence of stand composition on understory cover and biomass was investigated on two soil types (clay and till deposits). Four forest composition types were considered in this study: aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and a mixture of balsam-fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Within-community species-area relationships were examined for vascular plants and epiphytic lichens on Populus spp within 100 treed patches in an area of less than 4 km2 in the aspen parkland of south-central Alberta, Canada. Both plants and lichens were sampled on three scales (patch-scale and two within-patch scales). This study is one of the few to demonstrate scale-dependent species-area relationships at a small scale and highlights the importance of multi-scale sampling in ecology. The anther culture technique as a biotechnological application was combined with conventional breeding methods in order to improve tobacco varieties' resistant to powdery mildew prevailing in the Aegean region of Turkey. For this, resistance was transferred to two varieties from a genitor by the backcross method leading to derive haploid plants from the cultured anthers of BC_1 plants firstly, and dihaploid plants by acenaphthene or colchicine treatments secondly. Using the 1992-1996's irrigation results, 15 different physical, economic and institutional efficiency indicators were applied to the Bursa groundwater irrigation project to evaluate the performance of the system. The character was a mutant induced by gamma rays and has the potential to make possible mechanised harvesting in sesame by enabling synchronous flowering. The forage yield and quality of hairy vetch, grasspea and triticale grown alone and as mixtures of legume + triticale were investigated in field experiments conducted in the fields of the Faculty of Agriculture of Gaziosmanpaşa University in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000. The highest dry matter (10.06 t/ha) and crude protein yields (1.56 t/ha) were obtained from the mixture including 50% Line-452 of grasspea + 50% triticale. On the other hand, the highest seed yield (5.38 t/ha) was achieved from the 50% Line-38 of grasspea + 50% triticale mixture. This study was carried out to determine the effect of different planting times on the essential oil components of different mint varieties (Mentha arvensis var. piperascens, M. piperita Mitcham, M. piperita Eskişehir and M. piperita Prilubskaja). The field trials were conducted at the GAP Agricultural Research Station under Harran Plain conditions in 1993 and 1994. The mint oil components, a-pinene (0.49-1.00%), b-pinene (1.38-2.12%), 1,8-cineole (2.64-10.85%), menthone, menthofuran (28.09-49.52%), menthole (22.55-38.89%), pulegone (0.00-1.32%), menthyl acetate (0.46-6.78%) and b-caryophyllene (0.54-2.84%), were determined. The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first aim is to present briefly game theory and to illustrate the relationship between game theory and linear programming. The other aim is to apply game theory to field crops. Production Of Dissolving Grade Pulp From Poplar Wood By Ethanol-Water Process, Hüseyi̇n Kirci, Mehmet Akgül

The possibilities of dissolving grade pulp production from poplar by an ethanol-water process were investigated. The effects of ethanol ratio, cooking temperature and acid catalyst ratio on unbleached, bleached and alkali-purified pulps were studied. It was seen that catalyst ratios exceeding 0.01% caused serious yield and viscosity losses. The results showed that with the catalyst ratio to pulping liquor exceeding 0.01%, pulp yield and viscosity were reduced to an unacceptable level. The best pulping result was obtained at 40% ethanol consistency, 180 ºC pulping temperature and 150 min reaction time without the addition of acid catalyst to the pulping liquor. …

The Forest Legacy Program (FLP) authorizes the USDA Forest Service or state governments to purchase permanent conservation easements on private forest lands and to prevent those lands from being converted to a non-forest use. The forest lands that contain important scenic, cultural, recreation resources, fish and wildlife habitats, water resources, and other ecological values that will support continued traditional forest uses receive priority. Those land owners that choose to participate in the program are required to follow a stewardship plan designed for their forest. Activities consistent with the management plan, including timber harvesting, grazing, and recreation activities, are permitted.

Plumeless thistle, Carduus acanthoides L., is an introduced Eurasian noxious weed in pastures, rangelands, croplands, and along highways in 19 of the contiguous states in the United States (Frick, 1978). Carduus acanthoides and Carduus nutans L. in the northeastern United States often occupy the same habitats, such as overgrazed pastures and disturbed roadsides, and these species sometimes occur as mixed stands.
