The chemical composition of honeys produced in Eastern and South-Eastern Anatolia (Turkey) was studied. For this aim, the composition of 45 honey samples collected from the mentioned regions and the effect of one year storage (20 ± 5ºC) on the diastase activity and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content were determined. Compositional data measured in the fresh honeys were HMF, diastase number, moisture, invert sugar, sucrose, ash, proline, pH, free acid and lactone. 15 American rootstocks (Rupestris du Lot, 99 R, 110 R, 1103 P, 420 A, SO 4, 5 C, 44-53 M, 1616 C, Ramsey, 1613 C, 41 B, 5 BB, Fercal, Harmony) were used as plant materials. Because of the importance of rootstock breeding programs, the flower biology of rootstocks were studied. For this reason, the morphology and anatomy of the flowers and the productivity, viability, germination rate, size and shape classification of the pollens were examined. It is of great importance to study the activities of fungi in forest ecosystems for both protecting them and optimizing their functions. In this study, we present 130 species of xylotroph micromycetes found on six different species of oak in Azerbaijan. Of the species found, 54 were from 38 genera from 10 families of the Ascomycotina subdivision. Thirty-four were of the Pyrenomycetes class in which many have stromas or their peritheciums formed in dense groups. 2,4-D amine and 2,4-D isooctylester were sprayed repeatedly in the spring of 5 consecutive years on spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.cv.Kırik)in Erzurum during the years 1990-1994. The herbicide efficacy against all broad-leaved weeds and against the most common weed species was determined by comparing the number of weeds in untreated and treated plots. The most abundant weed species were Polygonum aviculare, Amaranthus retroflexus and Chenopodium albumin spring wheat. The effect of 2,4-D amine decreased after 3 or 4 years in A.retroflexus, C.album,Convolvulus arvensis, Acroptilon repens, Lactuca serriola, P.aviculare, Cirsium arvense and other broad-leaved weeds. In this study, variability in pathogenicity among Fusarium graminearum isolates from different locations in Ohio was determined. The most virulent isolates from these locations were chosen and used in segregation studies to evaluate the resistance of some resistant by resistant winter wheat crosses to Fusarium head scab. Differences in pathogenicity levels were significant among isolates even from the same location. Several generalizations can be made about the segregating generations in this study. The results indicated that Ning 7840 carries multiple genes for resistance. In addition, we found that Freedom and Ning 7840 have at least one resistance gene different. Although …

Both an \alpha-amylase gene of Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 and a gene encoding \beta-glucanase from B.subtilis RSKK243 were cloned and expressed in both E.coli XL1-Blue MRF and B.subtilis YB886 by using the vectors pUC18 and pUB110 respectively. These genes were also cloned into the E.coli-yeast shuttle vectors pRS406 and pRS416 for transfer into the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.These constructs carrying \alpha -amylase and \alpha -glucanase,genes which were cloned into the pRS406 vector,were expressed by integration into the yeast chromosome.These genes were also expressed in the yeast by autonomous replication of the ARS/CEN plasmid pRS416.This work demonstrates that genes belonging to B.subtilis can …

This study was conducted under Tokat ecological conditions during 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1995/96. Fifteen narbonne vetch (Vicia narbonensis L.) lines obtained from ICARDA were used. The results of variance analyses showed that there were statistically significant differences among lines for some characters. The highest seed yield (217.2 kg/da) was produced by the line 2466 and the lowest (144.9 kg/da) by the line 2380. 1000-seed weight ranged between 158.7 and 301.2 g, whereas biological yield ranged between 547.4 and 848.1 kg/da. The amount of water applied was based on free surface evaporation from a screened Class-A Pan. Therefore, the problems of forestry production studies are gaining in importance. In forestry production studies, the absence of mechanization level and its application causes qualitative and quantitative losses. Tomato flavor results from taste components, aromatic volatiles and a complex interaction between them. Lack of characteristic flavor in supermarket tomatoes is a common consumer complaint. Sugars, organic acids, free amino acids, and salts are the main taste components. With over 400 volatile compounds identified, only thirty are present in concentrations over one ppb and of these, only 16 contribute significantly to the perceptible flavor. Radiolabeled substrate and enzyme denaturation studies have indicated involvement of some pathway enzymes in the biosynthesis of tomato aroma compounds. Oil Content And Oil Quality Properties Of Some Grape Seeds, Ni̇lgün Göktürk Baydar, Murat Akkurt

In the present study, the oil contents and some oil quality properties of seeds taken from 18 grape cultivars were examined. The results showed that the oil concentration of seeds ranged from 11.6 to 19.6%. Grape seeds were rich in oleic and linoleic acids, ranging from 17.8 to 26.5% and 60.1 to 70.1%, respectively. The degree of unsaturation in the grape seed oil was over 86%, and the average concentration of total tocopherol in oil was around 454 mg/kg. In this research, partial nucleotide sequences of the axi 1 gene, which is related to auxin perception and transduction, isolated from Vicia sativa using cDNA library screening were investigated. Four V. sativa cDNA clones representing homologous of the tobacco axi 1 (auxin independent) cDNA clone were isolated and characterized. With sequence analysis two different clones were observed, called 10/3a and 16/3b. Sequences about 500 bp from the 5' end and 450 bp from the 3' end were determined from the 10/3a clone. This study analyzes the onion market and the dynamic behavior of real onion prices in Turkey. The price responsiveness of the supply, demand and export of dry onions was determined. The equilibrium price for producers was derived using the market closing condition of the partial equilibrium model. Price flexibility was also estimated using wholesale market data. The results verified the existence of cyclical behavior of onion prices in the market. The elasticities evaluated at the sample mean were 0.26, -1.02, and -0.24 for supply, export demand and flexibility respectively. This research was realized to study the morphological characteristics of 3-0 years old seedlings, obtained from seeds, which were collected from 22 Lebanon cedar seed stands. The seedlings were grown at the Nursery of the Black Sea Technical University. This research was carried out from 1993 through 1995 for a two-year period in dry farming areas of Haymana/Ankara. The aim of the research was to determine the available water content of the 0-60 and 0-90 cm soil depth layers for wheat after fallow periods and after winter and spring crops of lentils under two different soil tillage treatments. In this study, the effect of axi 1 gene on cortical cell division during different stages of nitrogen fixation and on the role of polar auxin transport were investigated. In this study, the use of cola extract and cola flavor in ice cream production were investigated. Cola extract was used at rates of between 0 and 1.5% based on mix weight. The samples with Na_2CO_3 (between 0 and 20% and based on the weight of cola extract) were used to balance the acidic taste of the samples due to the low pH of the cola extract. Crude tomato lipoxygenase (LOX) from ripe Florida47 tomatoes was used in this study. Extracted crude LOX was assayed spectrophotometrically. The effects of different buffers and pHs, substrate preparations, temperature and tissue location on LOX activity were evaluated. The enzyme was most active with MES buffer at a pH of 6.0 and a temperature of 25ºC. The best substrate was the first preparation with linoleic acid/Tween 20 at a ratio of 1:1.5. The kinetic parameters determined under the best conditions were a Km of 4.198 mM and a Vmax of 0.84 mM/min. The enzyme was heat labile, and most activity was …

The kinetics of water absorption by chickpeas (Koçbaşı, Kuşbaşı), lentils (green Pul) and beans (Battal, Dermason, Horoz, Şeker) grown in Turkey were studied by a gravimetric method during soaking at 15, 25 and 40ºC to determine moisture diffusivity of these selected legumes. The water diffusion coefficients of the legumes were in the range 9.71x10^{-11} - 5.98x10^{-10} m^2/s for the chickpeas, 3.53x10^{-10} - 1.33x10^{-9} m^2/s for the lentils and 4.35x10^{-11} - 3.79x10^{-9} m^2/s for the beans. Plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are being used increasingly in the construction of upholstered furniture frames. Yet there is little information available concerning the holding strength of various fasteners, and, in particular, dowels in these materials. Comparing Cotton Evapotranspirations Estimated By Micrometeorological And Water Budget Methods, Mustafa Ünlü, Riza Kanber, Kenan Di̇ker, Pasquale Steduto

This study aimed at comparing actual water consumption of cotton obtained by the water balance method under full and limited irrigation conditions, with that estimated by a micrometeorological method (energy balance), which is being widely used nowadays. Results indicated that in the first year the total irrigation water applied was 438 mm, whereas in the second year it was 199 mm. Deep percolation losses were were 6 and 0 mm, respectively, in the first and second year of the experiment. This research was carried out in 1995-97, in Erzurum ecological conditions, in order to study the effects of different seeding rates (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 seeds/m^2) and cutting times (at shooting, boot, heading and flowering stages) on hay yield and quality. The effects of seeding rates on fresh and dry hay yields, crude protein content and crude protein yield were significant while P, Ca, Mg, K, and ash contents and tetany value were not significant, based on the research. In maize, three male testers and six female lines together with their 18 F_1 hybrids were evaluated to study the general and specific combining ability estimates and heterosis following line x tester approach. Analysis of variance indicated the existence of significant variation among F_1 and parents for all characteristics. Average heterosis was significant for all characteristics studied and was positive, except for days to tasseling, with the average yield of hybrids being 79.8% above that of the parents. The aim of this study is to investigate the species composition and significance of beech-wood decomposing macromycetes. A total of 101 species of macromycetes were found on beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) in Azerbaijani forests. All species of xylotophic macromycetes belonged to 52 genera and 13 families of the orders Aphyllophorales, Polyporales, Agaricales and Auriculariales from the subdivision Basidiomycotina. The greatest part (79%) of xylotrophic species is represented by the order Aphyllophorales, species of Polyporales compose 10.9%, Agaricales 8.9%, and only one species belonging to the order Auriculariales. This study presents the results of a study conducted to determine stem quality and the homogeneity of stands of ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Wahl.) in natural and plantation stands in the central and western Black Sea Regions in Turkey. This study was conducted to determine the agricultural technical conditions and irrigation systems for obtaining high yields in wheat production. A questionnaire was prepared and applied to farmers growing wheat in Ankara, Konya and Eskişehir in 1996. After analyzing the data, we determined the water resources, the amount of water used for wheat production, the allocation of crops, and the technical and financial problems faced by farmers in the research area. Nitrogen (N) saturation is an environmental concern for forests in the eastern U.S. Although several watersheds of the Fernow Experimental Forest (FEF), West Virginia exhibit symptoms of Nsaturation, many watersheds display a high degree of spatial variability in soil N processing. This study examined the effects of temperature on net N mineralization and nitrification in N-saturatedsoils from FEF, and how these effects varied between high N-processing vs. low N-processingsoils collected from two watersheds, WS3 (fertilized with [NH4]2SO4) and WS4 (untreated control).
