Over the past decade, timber values have risen considerably, and society is beginning to see timberland for what it is – a valuable capital asset that must be managed properly. Timberlands, however, cannot be subject to an “across the board” management regime. Different sites possess different productive constraints, and the same holds true for landowners and their management goals. The Forester's Dilemma : Paradoxes In The Criteria And Indicators For Sustainable Forestry, Theodore E. Howard

Since sustainable forestry is a complex endeavor, paradoxes naturally exist in the certification criteria and indicators. There are different ways to establish the sustainability horizon and alternative harvest profiles that, although sustainable, may not meet specific criteria. The application of historic range of variation data and criteria must confront issues of time and spatial scales as well as how much human disturbance is natural. Defining “local” in the bioregional context is important for addressing socioeconomic criteria. The forester’s ability to deal with the self-contradictions in the criteria and indicators of sustainable forestry will improve with experience in the certification process.

During a study of Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) nesting in eastern Texas, we discovered a single breeding pair of woodpeckers with two simultaneous nests in nest trees that were 24 m apart. Incubation of eggs in each nest tree was at least 13 d and may have been as long as 16 d. The breeding male incubated and fed a nestling in one nest tree, and the breeding female incubated and fed a nestling in the other nest tree until the nestlings were >24 d old. The Red-cockaded Woodpecker (Picoides borealis) is a cooperatively breeding species that typically uses a single cavity for nesting (Ligon 1970, Walters et al. 1988). A single tree, or aggregation of cavity trees, termed the cluster, is inhabited by a group of woodpeckers that includes a single breeding pair and up to several helpers, which are typically male offspring of previous breeding seasons (Ligon 1970, Lennartz et al. 1987). Each group of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers usually produces one nest per breeding season, but will often nest again during the same breeding season if the first nest fails. Double clutching and …

The goal of this project was to take the first step in analyzing this vibration. This meant setting up measuring equipment and analyzing basic blade vibrations.
In this experiment, a laboratory coater (Dow coater at Western Michigan University) was used instead of a tissue machine because it was readily available and easy to control and modify. An accelerometer was used to measure the vibration of a blade on the coater. A computer using Labview was used for data acquisition. The highly dynamic, fine-root component of forested wetland ecosystems has received inadequate attention in the literature. Characterizing fine root dynamics is a challenging endeavor in any system, but the difficulties are particularly evident in forested floodplains where frequent hydrologic fluctuations directly influence fine root dynamics. Fine root (< 3mm) biomass, production, and turnover were estimated for three soils exhibiting different drainage patterns within a mixed-oak community on the Coosawhatchie River floodplain, Jasper County, SC. Within a 45-cm deep vertical profile, 74% of total fine root biomass was restricted to the upper 15 cm of the soil surface. Fine root biomass decreased as the soil became less well-drained (e.g., fine root biomass in well-drained soil > intermediately drained soil > poorly drained soil). Fine root productivity was measured for one year using minirhizotrons and in-situ screens. Both methods suggested higher fine root production in better drained soils but showed frequent fluctuations in fine root growth and mortality, suggesting the need for frequent sampling at short intervals (e.g., monthly) to …

Atta texana (Buckley), the Texas leaf-cutting ant, rapidly expanded in a harvested forested landscape on sandhills characterized by droughty soils, causing mortality of planted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda (L.)). The site, composed primarily of Quartzipsamments soils classified as thermic coated Typic Quartzipsamments in the Tonkawa soil series, accounts for approximately 5,000 ha in Nacogdoches, Rusk, Panola, and San Augustine Counties in eastern Texas, USA (Dolezel 1980). These soils are characterized by low fertility, rapid permeability, and extreme acid reaction. These sandhills are resistant to erosion and are considered important ground water recharge areas. Southern forests play an increasingly important role in the timber economy as per capita demand for wood continues to expand. Moreover, harvest restrictions in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s shifted a large portion of United States demand for softwoods to the South. In Mississippi, most of the forestland is owned by non-industrial private forest (NIPF) landowners. Approximately 314,000 NIPF landowners control 66 percent of the state’s forestland base (Hartsell and London 1995). The sizable acreage of timberland held by NIPF landowners nationally and in-state underscores the importance of their role in the timber economy and weighs heavily in …

Many forest landowners consider their forest to be an investment. Some of these landowners, however, and many new timberland investors, may not fully understand the basic ingredients that make up a forestry investment. Like all investments, forestry involves costs and revenues, and rates of return can be calculated. These rates of return can be compared with interest rates earned for other investments, but forest landowners should be sure to understand the unique characteristics of a forestry investment. Most of the cash flow from a forestry investment will result from timber sales. Timber sale revenue, of course, is a function of …

Landsat 7 ETM+ provides an opportunity to extend the area and frequency with which we are able to monitor the Earth’s surface with fine spatial resolution data. To take advantage of this opportunity it is necessary to move beyond the traditional image-by-image approach to data analysis. A new approach to monitoring large areas is to extend the application of a trained image classifier to data beyond its original temporal, spatial, and sensor domains. Enhancins are a group of proteins first identified in granuloviruses (GV) that have the ability to enhance nuclear polyhedrosis virus potency. We had previously identified an enhancin gene (E1) in the Lymantria dispar multinucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (LdMNPV) (D. S. Bischoff and J. M. Slavicek, J. Virol. 71:8133–8140, 1997). Inactivation of the E1 gene product within the viral genome lowered viral potency by an average of 2.9-fold. A second enhancin gene (E2) was identified when the entire genome of LdMNPV was sequenced (Kuzio et al., Virology 253:17–34, 1999). Here we submit that mathematical tools used in population viability analysis can be used in conjunction with floristic and faunistic surveys to predict changes in biogeographic range. We illustrate our point by summarizing the results of a demographic study of Lobelia boykinii. In this study we used deterministic and stochastic matrix models to estimate the growth rate and to predict the time to extinction for three populations growing in the Carolina bays. The stochastic model better discriminated among the fates of the three populations. It predicted extinction for two populations in the next 25 years but no extinction of the …

Aspen is notoriously difficult to age because of its light-colored wood and faint annual growth rings. Careful preparation and processing of aspen ring samples can overcome these problems, yield accurate age and growth estimates, and concisely date disturbance events present in the tree-ring record. Proper collection of aspen wood is essential in obtaining usable ring data. Mounting of increment cores and sawn disk samples to wood backings holds samples rigid for easy surfacing. Sequential use of planers, belt sanders, and an assortment of sanding material on the surface of aspen core and disk samples can enhance visibility of tree rings. …

Humans assign four types of meanings to aspen landscapes: (1) instrumen- tal meanings dealing with the attainment of a goal—such as production of pulp or provision of recreation opportunities; (2) aesthetic meanings; (3) cultural/symbolic meanings dealing with spiritual and social attachments to landscapes; and (4) individual/expressive meanings derived out of interactions with aspen landscapes at the personal level. The amount of knowledge available for each meaning varies, with most knowledge developed for instrumental meanings. Management of aspen occurs within a dynamic social and political context, with greater emphasis being placed on the latter two meanings, but without the empirical, positivist …

Although fire has been used extensively over long periods of time in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) ecosystems, little is known concerning the effects of frequent fire use on nutrient cycling and decomposition. To better understand the long-term effects of fire on these processes, foliar litter decomposition rates were quantified in a study investigating prescribed fire and uneven-aged loblollypine management in the Upper Coastal Plain in Arkansas. Part of the study area had been burned on a 2- to 3-year cycle since 1981, whereas another portion had not received any prescribed fires. In this study, the proportional saturation and the fluid uptake of preservative liquid (that was) applied under the same pressure was investigated comparatively on the various longitudinal length of wood specimens in the two softwood species. Wood specimens of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.)Carr.) and Corsican pine (Pinus nigra var.mantima) representative of two different permeability classifications, cut into five different lengths were treated with tanalith-C using the full-cell process under the same conditions. It appeared that longitudinal fluid flow decreased with increased specimen lengths. The shorter lengths were saturated effectively due to the shorter flow paths,and their retentions were higher …

The objective of this study was to evaluate grain yield and yield components of popcorn with different nitrogen rates and plant densities. Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 at Kazova Plain in Tokat. The experiment was designed in a randomized-complete-block design with a split-plot arrangement with three replications. The treatments comprised six levels of nitrogen (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg N /ha) and four plant densities (5.7, 7.0, 9.5 and 14.0 plants /m^2). The effect of salicylic acid (SA)and Glomus etunicatum (GE)on plant development of tomatoes and infection potential of wilt disease Fusarium oxysporum f.sp lycopersici (Fol)were studied. The effects of different SA concentrations on mycelial development of Fol were tested in vitro and two concentrations of SA and GE were included in pot experiment. SA completely inhibited the mycelial development of Fol in vitro at concentrations from 0.6 mM to 1.0 mM and ED50 value was found as 0.51 mM. In this study the possibility of using pheromone traps against California Red Scale (C.R.S.), Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) (Hom.: Diaspididae), the main pest of citrus fruits, was examined. In 1995 and 1996 the male flight periods and four peak points were determined. There was a significant correlation between trapped males and leave-fruit C.R.S. populations. By the use of pheromone traps the unobserved C.R.S. population can be determined in the orchard. The most suitable application time could be determined properly from the IPM point of view. This study was performed to determine the effects of exposure to outdoor condition and of the bleaching process after exposure outdoor conditions after the bleaching process on hardness, both parallel and perpendicular to the fibre axis, on Scotchs pine (Pinus Sylvestris Lipsky) wood. For this purpose, samples were exposed to outdoor conditions for 12 months, and afterwards they were bleached with solution groups of 18% NaOH+H_2O_2, NaSiO_3+H_2O_2 and Ca(OH)_2+H_2O_2. This research was conducted at the Research and Application Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ankara during the growing periods of 1996-1998. Winter Hungarian vetch treated with different inoculation methods (no inoculation, seed inoculation and soil inoculation) and nitrogen doses (0, 2, 4 kg N/da) was harvested in two periods (for hay and seed). Yield and some yield components of Bezostaja 1 bread wheat variety, which was sown in the same plots, were studied.
