Comparison Of Two Roadside Survey Procedures For Dwarf Mistletoes On The Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho, Robert L. Mathiasen, James T. Hoffman, John C. Guyon, Linda L. Wadleigh

Two roadside surveys were conducted for dwarf mistletoes parasitizing lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir on the Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho. One survey used variable-radius plots located less than 150 m from roads. The 2nd survey used variable-radius plots established at 200-m intervals along 1600-m transects run perpendicular to the same roads. Estimates of the incidence (percentage of trees infected and percentage of plots infested) and severity (average dwarf mistletoe rating) for both lodgepole pine and Douglas-fir dwarf mistletoes were not significantly different for the 2 survey methods. Characterization Of The Lymantria Dispar Nucleopolyhedrovirus 25k Fp Gene, David S. Bischoff, James M. Slavicek

The Lymantria dispar nucleopolyhedrovirus (Ld/V/NPV) gene encoding the 25K FP protein has been cloned and sequenced. The 25KFP gene codes for a 217 amino acid protein with a predicted molecular mass of 24870 Da. Expression of the 25K FP protein in a rabbit reticulocyte system generated a 27 kDa protein, in close agreement with the molecular mass predicted from the nucleotide sequence. The gene is located between 40"3 and 40.8 map units on the viral genome. This study was carried out to determine the seasonal variations in the amount of leaf nutrient elements, and nutritional status through soil and plant analysis in Erzincan apricot (cv. Hasanbey) orchards. The seasonal variations of plant nutrient element in leaves were generally minimum starting 20 days before harvest and lasted until harvest in Erzincan. This term was found the best time in order to collect the leaf samples At the experimental site pH ranged from 0.77 to 3.16%. Leaf N contents of some orchards were found to be below normal. P content of both soil and leaves was generally insufficient. …

C Selection was done on the basis of certain morphological, phenological and technological properties, in the studies conductted for increase of fertility in second crop of rice under Menemen ecological conditions during the year 1990-1991. Amongst 16 genotypes studies 2 genotypes found suitable for second crop of rice due to their resistance against extremly high temperature which causes sterility and determined as having high fertility were sent to "Variety Testing and Relies Institute Ankara". The project was completed with the second year success in the regional varietal yield.

The objective of this study is to compare the effect of different zinc sources on the dry matter yield and Zn content of rice plants grown in the soils having different levels of the total calcium carbonate. This study was carried out under Van ecological conditions in 1986-87 and 1987-88 vegetation periods. Three bread wheat varieties (305 Yayla, Tir Wheat, 220/39 Köse) was sowing by Tir and normal wheat drill and yield and yield components was determined. The result of this study, according to years the highest yield was different but is was obtained from 305 Yayla variety which was sowing by normal drill. The lowest yield was obtained from 220/39 Köse which was sowing by Tir drill.

In this research the fertilization biologies of mid and late flowering 4 almond types (101-9, 101-13, 101-23 and 106-1) selected from different parts of Turkey and Texas cultivar were studied. For this purpose, first of all, pollen viability tests with TTC and FDA and pollen germination tests in 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 20 % sucrose mediums by hanging drop method were performed. In this experiment, the effects of bottom heating on rooting of hardwood cuttings with different number of buds of Dog Ridge, Salt Creek, Harmony, 1616 C and 1613 C which are nematode-resistant rootstock varieties were investigated, and rooting percentage, degree of rooting, total number and length of roots were determined. The highest values were obtained from the bottom heated cuttings with had three and four buds. The results showed that 1616 C had superior rooting ability than the other rootstocks in all characteristics tested. Differents colchicine doses (0.5 % and 1 %) and treatment periods (1, 2, 4 and 6 hours) were tested in vitro conditions in order to obtain dihaploid lines from parthenogenetic haploid plants which achieved by irradiated pollen. Treatments were made to 3-4 weeks age in vitro microcuttings of Sugar Baby, Halep Karasi and Crimson Sweet varieties. 64 percent of the plants treated with 0.5 % colchicine stayed alive and 56 % of the plants were developed into a new plant. According to the results obtained from two years rotation experiment, which was carried out under Ankara-Haymana dryfarming conditions during 1991-1993, conclusions can be summarized as follows: Soil water contents measured during vegetation period as well as at harvest time of six previous crops were significantly different in the first year of the rotation. At harvest time of previous crops and planting time of wheat, higher soil water content found in fallow plots in comparison to winter sown legumes (lentil, vetch, pea and Hungarian vetch). Interspecific competition between Agropyron spicatum (Pursh.) Scrib. & Smith bunchgrasses and naturally established seedlings of Pinus ponderosa was examined within a pine/bunchgrass community. A wire mesh was used to separate bunchgrass culms from pine seedling shoots to determine if the bunchgrass canopy influenced the survival of pine seedlings. In addition, two lengths of root exclusion tubes were used to determine the effects of bunchgrass root overlap on pine seedlings. The bunchgrass canopy did not significantly affect pine seedling survival. However, root competition, presumably for water, significantly decreased pine seedling survival. Janet Green's clearly written book goes a long way toward clarifying the ecological issues involved as they apply to the forested regions of Minnesota. Birds and Forests is written as an instructive guide for non-specialists who want to know about the issues involved in ecosystem-based management of forests and wildlife in Minnesota. Green eschews 'wildlife habitat,' which is vague and begs the question, which wildlife? Instead, the focus is on birds because of their diversity, habitat specificity, relative ease of study, and popularity.

Fire scar and vegetative analysis were used to construct a fire history for the Engelmann spruce/subalpine fir (Picea engelmannii/Abies lasiocarpa) vegetation type of the Utah State University (USU) T. W Daniel Experimental Forest. Three distinct periods of fire frequency were established-presettlement (1700-1855), settlement (1856-1909), and suppression (1910-1990). Mean fire interval (MFI) decreased during the settlement period and greatly increased during the suppression era. The difference was attributed to the influx of ignition sources during the settlement of nearby Cache Valley, located 40 km to the west. This study analyzed spatial location patterns of Cercocarpus ledifolius Nutt. (curlleaf mountain mahogany) plants, classified as current-year seedling, established seedling, juvenile, and immature individuals, at a central Nevada study site. Most current-year seedlings were located in mahogany stands in which large, mature individuals had the greatest abundance. These stands had greater litter cover and a thicker layer of litter than areas with few current- year seedlings. Most established young Cercocarpus were located in adjacent Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana (mountain big sagebrush) communities, or in infrequent canopy gaps between relatively few large, mature Cercocarpus. The flight periodicity of western balsam bark beetle (Dryocoetes confusus Swaine) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, was studied during the summer months of 1992, 1993, and 1994. Contents of baited funnel traps were tallied by species up to 3 times weekly. Two main periods of flight activity were observed each year. The first and, generally, largest occurred in early summer soon after flight was initiated for the season. A 2nd period was observed in late summer, generally August. The recent introduction of the Asian gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) into North America has necessitated the development of genetic markers to distinguish Asian moths from the established North American population, which originated in Europe. We used RAPD-PCR to identify a DNA length polymorphism that is diagnostic for the two moth strains. The polymorphism maps to an autosomal locus with codominant Mendelian inheritance. DNA sequence analyses of the Asian and North American forms enabled development of locus-specific primers so that this marker, designated FS-1, will be useful for strain identification under varying conditions in different laboratories.
