Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Chestnut blight, caused by Cryphonectria parasitica Murr. Barr, is the most serious disease of chestnut trees in Turkey on which several studies related to biological control were conducted. The aim of this study was to determine the cause of the occurrence of healing cankers on untreated chestnut trees and the role of carriers in the spread of hypovirulence by laboratory tests, and to discover the effect of some environmental factors (temperature and relative humidity) on the natural spreading of hypovirulence. The study was carried out in a chestnut grove where biological control studies of the disease had been performed in …

Effect Of Wood Chip Size On Hemicellulose Extraction Andtechnological Properties Of Flakeboard, Nadi̇r Ayrilmiş, Jin Heon Kwon, Tae Hyung Han Jan 2017

Effect Of Wood Chip Size On Hemicellulose Extraction Andtechnological Properties Of Flakeboard, Nadi̇r Ayrilmiş, Jin Heon Kwon, Tae Hyung Han

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The effect of chip size on hemicellulose extraction of wood and technological properties of flakeboard were investigated. Three different sizes of wood chips were treated with hot water in a digester at 170 °C for 90 min. After hydrothermal treatment, the wood chips were washed with water and then dried in a dryer. Flakes were produced from control and treated chips using a flaker. Flakeboards were produced from the flakes using urea-formaldehyde resin. The results showed that chip size had a significant effect on the chemical properties of hydrothermally treated wood under pressure in hot water. As chip size was …

Effect Of Pollenizers On Production And Fruit Characteristics Of Date Palm(Phoenix Dactylifera L.) Cultivar Medjool In Mexico, Ricardo Salomon-Torres, Noe Ortiz-Uribe, Rafael Villa-Angulo, Carlos Villa-Angulo, Susana Norzagaray-Plasencia, Cristian Garcia-Verdugo

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Pollen from four date palm cultivars (Medjool, Zahidi, Khadrawy, and Deglet Noor) was selected to study the effect of pollenizers on Medjool female production and fruit characteristics. The study was conducted during the 2016 season in San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico. Three bunches of each of the four selected female palms were pollinized by each source of pollen. Results were statistically analyzed using the ANOVA test. Set percentage and fruit characteristics showed a significant effect depending on the selected pollenizer. Bunches pollinized with the Zahidi cultivar had the highest fruit set percentage at 50.30%, while bunches pollinized with the Khadrawy …

Response Of Five Triticale Genotypes To Salt Stress In In Vitro Culture, İsmai̇l Bezi̇rğanoğlu Jan 2017

Response Of Five Triticale Genotypes To Salt Stress In In Vitro Culture, İsmai̇l Bezi̇rğanoğlu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Salinity is one of the important abiotic stresses that restrict plant development. Triticale is a highly adaptable crop, known for its high-quality grain, yield potential, and resistance to disease. Responses of five cultivated genotypes (Ümran Hanım, Mikham 2002, Melez 2001, Tatlıcak, and Alper Bey) of triticale to salt stress were tested in callus and embryogenic callus formation in this study. Cotyledon explants were selected as explants for callus induction and embryogenic callus formation. The five tested triticale genotypes varied in their callus growth and embryogenic callus formation. Ümran Hanım, Tatlıcak, and Alper Bey were observed for better callus induction; similarly, …

Use Of Snp Markers By Kasp Assay For Mas Studies In Sunflower Againstplasmopara Halstedii, Kevser Kösoğlu, Sevcan Yumuk, Yildiz Aydin, Göksel Evci̇, Ahu Altinkut Uncuoğlu Jan 2017

Use Of Snp Markers By Kasp Assay For Mas Studies In Sunflower Againstplasmopara Halstedii, Kevser Kösoğlu, Sevcan Yumuk, Yildiz Aydin, Göksel Evci̇, Ahu Altinkut Uncuoğlu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Downy mildew is a fungal disease caused by Plasmopara halstedii and leads to loss of yield up to 100% in sunflower. Disease control is performed mostly through chemical seed treatment and breeding. Due to the time consuming nature of conventional breeding, it is supported by biotechnological approaches. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is a strategic approach in molecular breeding using molecular markers. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) such as insertions, deletions, and base-pair substitutions are more advantageous than other molecular markers. The abundance and biallelic nature of SNPs in a genome provide flexibility in the choosing of SNPs at the desired loci. Competitive …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study evaluated seedling traits (shoot/root length, fresh and dry weights of shoots/roots, number of leaves, shoot diameter), phosphorus (P) content, mycorrhizal colonization (MC), and relative mycorrhizal dependency (RMD) of 21 common bean genotypes inoculated by 4 different arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) [Glomus intraradices (Gi), Glomus mosseae (Gm), Gigaspora margarita (Gim), and commercial AMF (cAMF)] in a growth chamber under controlled growing conditions. With the exception of shoot diameter, inoculated plants had better seedling traits than noninoculated plants. P content of shoot was also higher in inoculated plants than in noninoculated plants. Of the 20 genotypes and Nadide cv. examined, …

The Greatest Undertaking: The Unique History Of The Nebraska Forest Service, Tony Foreman Jan 2017

The Greatest Undertaking: The Unique History Of The Nebraska Forest Service, Tony Foreman

Nebraska Forest Service: Publications

Perhaps forests and trees are not the first images one conjures when thinking about Nebraska. Indeed, an old joke claims the Nebraska State Tree is a wooden football goalpost. Yet Nebraska has a unique forestry history. Pioneers of the mid-nineteenth century moved into what was popularly known as the Great American Desert, and they rolled the dice that this semi-arid land, seemingly incapable of sustaining trees, could somehow grow crops. After winning that gamble, the settlers yearned for the trees they had grown accustomed to in the Eastern United States. They missed the beauty of the wooded areas and the …

Maintaining Ecosystem Resilience: Functional Responses Of Tree Cavity Nesters To Logging In Temperate Forests Of The Americas, Jose Tomas Ibarra, Michaela Martin, Kristina L. Cockle, Kathy Martin

Aspen Bibliography

Logging often reduces taxonomic diversity in forest communities, but little is known about how this biodiversity loss affects the resilience of ecosystem functions. We examined how partial logging and clearcutting of temperate forests influenced functional diversity of birds that nest in tree cavities. We used point-counts in a before-after-control-impact design to examine the effects of logging on the value, range, and density of functional traits in bird communities in Canada (21 species) and Chile (16 species). Clearcutting, but not partial logging, reduced diversity in both systems. The effect was much more pronounced in Chile, where logging operations removed critical nesting …
