This study was aimed at determining the contents of different forms of polyphenols and antioxidant activities of hulless barley. The contents and types of polyphenols were detected by Folin-ciocalteu and HPLC, respectively. The antioxidant activity was investigated by testing the scavenging ability of DPPH radicals. Results showed that the free, bind and total phenolic content of hulless barley decreased respectively by 89.3%, 23.7% and 52.7%, and esterified polyphenols slightly increased by 2.49 mg/100 g after processing. In order to simultaneously determine narirutin, naringin, hesperidin, neohesperidin and limonin in pomelo, the effects of elution conditions and measurement wavelength of high-pressure liquid chromatography on the determination results were studied. To establish a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for the rapid determination of four synthetic antioxidants (BHT, BHA, TBHQ, and Ionox-100) in seven kinds of edible vegetable oils by QuEChERS assisted with ultrasonic extraction and purification. The technological conditions of semi-solid fermentation of lily multi-grain liquor were studied using lily and sorghum as the main raw materials, supplemented with rice and corn. Based on the single factor experiments, the saccharification and fermentation conditions of lily multi-grain liquor were optimized by orthogonal experiments and response surface experiments, and its flavor were also analyzed. The results showed that the optimal saccharification conditions were as followed: initial water content 55%, saccharification temperature 28 ℃, saccharification time 16 h, saccharification koji dosage 0.6%. Pecan shells are a rich source of various bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. This study investigated the effect of pecan variety and method extraction on the antioxidant property of shell extracts. Twenty different varieties of pecan shells were subjected to either aqueous or ethanolic extraction and were examined for total phenolics and antiradical activity. The phenolic content and antiradical activity of shell extracts were significantly (p < 0.05) varied with different pecan cultivars. The total phenolic content of ethanol extracts ranged from 304.2 (Caddo) to 153.54 (Cherokee) mg GAE/g of dry extract and was significantly greater (p < 0.05) than those obtained by aqueous extraction. The antiradical activity of ethanol extracts ranged from 840.6 (Maramec) to 526.74 (Caper Fear) mg TEg−1, while aqueous extracts ranged from 934.9 (Curtis) to 468.3 (Elliot) mg TEg−1. Chemical profiling of the crude and acid hydrolyzed extracts was performed by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography and flow injection electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Lignin degradation products such as lignols, dilignols, trilignols, and oligolignols were found to be the major components of tested extracts. Phenolic content and antiradical activity of pecan shell extracts are significantly varied with cultivars and methods of extraction.

The objective of this randomized clinical trial was to determine if an intervention with colostrum replacer (CR; Premolac Plus, Zinpro; 125 g/d fed for 3 d) or a placebo milk replacer (Cows Match, Land O'Lakes Inc.; 125 g/d for 3 d) following a triggered alarm could ameliorate disease bouts in dairy calves. The alarm was set to detect negative deviations of milk intake (20% reduction) or drinking speed (30% reduction) in relation to a calf's 12-d rolling average feeding behavior. Glycidyl esters (GEs) and 3-chloroprapane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDEs) are processing contaminants in refined edible oils that have raised concerns globally owing to their potentially carcinogenic properties. Official analytical methods for GEs and 3-MCPDEs, such as AOCS Cd 29a-13 and AOCS Cd 29b-13, require up to 16 h for chemical hydrolysis. Also, parallel experiments should be conducted to correct for the conversion of analytes during hydrolysis in AOCS Cd 29b-13. We propose a convenient and easy colorimetric assay for highly sensitive detection of iodide by using gold nanostars (GNSs) as probes. The assay relies on that iodide directly changes the morphology of GNSs and alters their longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) without surface modifications and the use of other reagents. Upon increasing iodide concentration, GNSs gradually transformed to sphere gold nanoparticles, the absorbance at longitudinal LSPR decreased, and solution color varied from greenish blue to red, as confirmed by the UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) lack specific targeted therapy options and have evolved into highly chemo-resistant tumors that metastasize to multiple organs. The present study demonstrated that the proline dehydrogenase (PRODH) mRNA level in paired (tumor vs. normal) human breast tissue samples (n=234) was 6.6-fold greater than normal cells (*p=0.021). We established stable PRODH-overexpressing TNBC (HS578T) cells, and the malignant phenotypes were evaluated using soft agar colony formation and Transwell migration assays. The results demonstrated that PRODH induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in cancer cells and increased cell proliferation. The cancer-preventive activities of quercetin have been extensively studied in invasive breast cancer; however, the role of quercetin on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) with overexpression of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF1R) has not been resolved. In this article, we demonstrated that quercetin inhibited the activation of IGF1R and its downstream kinases Akt and Erk1/2 in a dose-dependent manner in human MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (TNBC cell line). Related to this, quercetin markedly suppressed the metastatic phenotype and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) of MDA-MB-231 cells by inhibiting the expression of EMT transcription factors Snail and Slug. Three-way analysis-based pH-UV-Vis spectroscopy was proposed for quantifying allura red in an energy drink product without the need for chromatographic analysis, and determining the colorant’s pKa without using any titration technique. We have demonstrated that red algae Gelidium amansii (GA) hot-water extract (GHE) is a polysaccharide-rich fraction, containing 68.54% water-soluble indigestible carbohydrate polymers; the molecular weight of major polysaccharide is 892. Here, we investigated the mechanisms of GHE on plasma and hepatic lipid metabolisms in high-fat (HF) diet-fed rats. Rats were divided into: normal diet group, HF-diet group, HF-diet+5% GHE group, and HF-diet+1% cholestyramine (positive control) group. GHE supplementation for 8 weeks significantly decreased plasma cholesterol, LDL-C, and VLDL-C levels and increased the fecal triglyceride and bile acid excretion in HF diet-fed rats. Ulcerative colitis (UC), a major form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is on the rise worldwide. Effective laboratory and classroom demonstration of microbiome size and shape, diversity, and ecological relationships is hampered by a lack of high-resolution, easy-to-use, readily accessible physical or digital models for use in teaching. Three-dimensional (3D) representations are, overall, more effective in communicating visuospatial information, allowing for a better understanding of concepts not directly observable with the unaided eye. Published morphology descriptions and microscopy images were used as the basis for designing 3D digital models, scaled at 20,000×, using computer-aided design software (CAD) and generating printed models of bacteria on mass-market 3D printers. High gravity (HG) brewing has become the most used strategy for maximizing fermenter productivity in commercial brewing. While HG brewing has many benefits, the additional stress placed on the yeast due to the higher concentration of fermentable sugars in the wort can negatively impact fermentation performance and flavor compound formation. The volatile components of glutinous rice bayberry wine and bayberry wine were compared by gas chromatography-ion migration spectrum, and the sensory evaluation was made at the same time. The volatile substances of bayberry wine mainly include ethyl butyrate, ethyl isobutyrate, ethyl orthocaproate, ethyl propionate, ethyl caprylate, glutaldehyde and 2-methylbutyraldehyde.The volatile substances of glutinous rice bayberry wine mainly include: ethyl isovalerate, ethyl valerate, isobutyl acetate, leaf alcohol acetate, ethyl lactate, propyl aldehyde, octyl aldehyde, trans-2-hexenal aldehyde, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone and diisobutyl ketone, etc. The composition of the two samples was significantly different. Comparison Of Nutritional, Flavor And Functional Characteristics Of Tibetan Yak Butter At Different Altitudes, Xie Si-Wei, Liu Chun-Ai, Sun Shu-Guo, Luo Zhang, Yang Fei-Yang

The fatty acid composition, volatile components, rheological properties and antioxidant activity of yak butter at different altitudes (2 500~2 800 m, 3 500~4 000 m and above 4 300 m) in Tibetan were analyzed and compared. The results showed that altitude had significant effects on fatty acid composition, volatile components, rheological properties, and antioxidant activity (P<0.05). The unsaturated fatty acid content of yak butter at altitude of 2 500~2 800 m was the highest. Yak butter with an altitude of more than 4 300 m had pure smell and best flavor quality. Yak butter at altitudes of 3 500~4 000 m had the best fluidity. Yak butter at different altitudes had different antioxidant abilities, among which yak butter at altitudes ranging from 2 500 m to 2 800 m had the strongest DPPH free radical (66.99 mmol/100 g Trolox), hydroxyl free Trolox (26.71 mmol/100 g Trolox), superoxide anion scavenging ability (22.85%), and iron ion chelating antioxidant ability (1.41%).
