Abstract
The combined study of Ochodaeus montanus Fuente, 1912 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Ochodaeidae) type material and recently collected specimens from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula provided evidence for the description of new specific morphological characters, and to clarify recurring mistakes present in the literature. A comparative study between O. montanus and its closest representative, O. inermis Reitter, 1892, was completed. An updated distribution map of O. montanus as well as a bilingual identification key for the four taxa occurring within the Iberian Peninsula is given.

Insects All Around Us: A Four-Session Bug Club Lesson Plan For Grades 3-5 Covering The Biology And Importance Of Insects In Nebraska, Carolyn Almonte
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Insects are often overlooked in science curricula when talking about conservation due to the surrounding fear and disgust regarding insects. This disgust not only permeates the mindsets of students, but also teachers, which leads to a hesitance to incorporate an insect-based curriculum or club into a lesson. In response to this, I have created a four-session club curriculum that can be used across four two hour long sessions spread out across four weeks. The goals of this club are: to explain the key traits of insects and arthropods, differentiating the two groups; to explain and define the basic stages of …

Determination Of A New Spring-Flying Species Of The Pterourus Glaucus Complex (Papilionidae) In Southern New England, Harry Pavulaan
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
The Pterourus glaucus complex in three southern New England states is analyzed for cryptic speciation. What was historically considered to be one species, P. glaucus (Linnaeus, 1758), was recently split to separate P. canadensis (Rothschild & Jordan, 1906) at species rank (Hagen et al., 1991). Additionally, P. appalachiensis Pavulaan & Wright, 2002, was described as an Appalachian Mountain endemic. The western member of the complex, P. rutulus (Lucas, 1852), has frequently been considered a subspecies of P. glaucus (Scott, 1986; Tyler, Brown & Wilson, 1994), as was P. alexiares (Höpffer, 1866) (Tyler, Brown & …

Significance Of Honeybee Pollination In Increasing Seed Yield Of Trifolium Alexandrinum (Fabales: Fabaceae) And Its Impact On Economic Sustainability Of Smallholder Farmers, Muhammad Shoaib Tufail, Gaye L. Krebs, Alison Southwell, John Piltz, Peter C. Wynn, David F. Cook
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
A major limitation to producing high seed yields in berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) is failure to set seed, predominantly due to lack of pollination. Despite the importance of berseem clover as a leading forage legume, the contribution of pollinators to seed set is scarce. In Pakistan, the honeybee population is declining mainly because of the extensive use of neonicotinoid pesticides and habitat fragmentation. This, combined with the region’s harsh environment and the use of inferior, locally bred genotypes, has resulted in low seed yields. Insufficient seed availability leads to limited forage supply, resulting in poor livestock nutrition, which …

The Ladybug, Alexandra M. Brisson
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
The Ladybug is a piece inspired by my wide-eyed youth. As a child, I was in awe of the ladybug's (Coccinellidae) iconic red elytra adorned with their contrasting black spots. I was also told that encountering a ladybug meant good luck and to make a wish, which fueled my fascination. As I began studying biology, I discovered that they play a crucial ecological role as voracious predators of aphids and other plant pests. Their contribution to natural pest control underscores their importance in agriculture and ecosystem balance. Ladybugs are valued allies, not only in the eyes of sustainable …

Natural Resources Research Articles
Fire is a major disturbance affecting ecosystems globally, but its impact on mutualisms has received minimal attention. Here, we use a long-term field experiment to investigate the impact of different fire regimes on globally important ant–honeydew and ant–extrafloral nectar (EFN) mutualistic interactions in an Australian tropical savanna. These interactions provide ants with a key energy source, while their plant and hemipteran hosts receive protection services. We examined ant interactions on species of Eucalyptus (lacking EFNs) and Acacia (with EFNs) in three replicate plots each of burning every 2 and 3 years early in the dry season, burning late in the …

Within the leaf-beetle subfamily Cassidinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Aproida Pascoe, 1863 (Aproidini) from Australia has been considered a transitional genus between mining cassidines (“hispines”) and exophagous cassidines (“tortoise beetles”). To illuminate this transition, a detailed study was conducted over one year of the biology of Aproida balyi Pascoe, 1863 on the host plant, Eustrephus latifolius R. Br. ex Ker-Gawl (Asparagaceae). Distribution maps of the host plant and three Aproida species are provided. The life cycle of A. balyi comprises single eggs in a foamy ootheca, three larval instars that feed openly, a pupa suspended from the larva III exuvia, and …

Sustainable pest management requires growers and regional land managers to consider the relationships among pest management practices, pest and natural enemy communities, crop loss, and multi-scalar habitat complexity. However, the causal links among these variables, in particular potential interactions between landscape and local-scale habitat complexity, remain underexplored. In the context of organically managed strawberry crops in California’s Central Coast, we tested the independent effects of landscape and local habitat complexity gradients on arthropod communities and crop loss using a piecewise structural equation model (PSEM). We found that landscape-scale woody habitat proportion indirectly decreased crop loss through its positive effect on …

Field pests
Damage from invertebrate pests is generally not a major factor for oat crops, however there is a zero tolerance to live pests in export hay.
Significant damage can occur if pest populations build up. Planning rotations to minimise pest carryover, timely sowing, adequate crop nutrition, and good control of weed and root diseases will assist in reducing the likelihood of crop damage by insect pests. Check crops regularly throughout their growth for field insects.
• Control redlegged earth mite and lucerne flea during the seedling stage if necessary.

Invasive Forest Pest Education Through Identification, Reporting, And Children’S Introduction Brochures, Lauren E. Keefe
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Forest pest insects, whether native or non-native, can be extremely detrimental to the health of a landscape, and can contribute to massive ecological, economic, and cultural losses. Unless directly exposed to the damage these pests cause, many people do not seek to become informed on the insects. A series of brochures was thus created as a collaboration between the online UNL M.S. in Entomology requirements and a need for updated Nebraska Forest Service Forest Health brochures. These brochures focus on invasive forest insect identification and reporting, as well as introducing the concepts of the invasives to children.

The Great Lakes Entomologist
A specimen of Hedychridium caeruleum (Norton) with four ocelli was discovered in Manitoba, Canada. The supernumerary ocellus is located to the right of the ocellar triangle, which otherwise appears normal. This is the first report of an ocellar or ocular teratology within Chrysididae, adding to the small body of literature currently available on supernumerary ocelli within Hymenoptera. This is the first published record of H. caeruleum in Canada.

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Dispersal of chalcid wasp larvae inhabiting the seeds of angiosperms by wild birds in North America has never been verified. I describe adult Megastigmus aculeatus Swederus that successfully emerged from seeds extracted from the droppings of six species of native North American non-captive birds. Rosa setigera is also confirmed as a host for this wasp for the first time.

Laboratory Rearing Methods For The Soybean Tentiform Leafminer (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), A New Pest Of Soybean, James Menger, Arthur Ribeiro, Fabio Fuhr, Robert L. Koch
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Soybean tentiform leafminer (STL), Macrosaccus morrisella (Fitch) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), is a leaf-mining microlepidopteran native to North America that was recently discovered feeding on soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., in Canada and the United States. A laboratory rearing system for STL was developed on live soybean plants. The methods for continuous rearing or cyclic (i.e., generational) production of insects are described herein. All rearing was performed in a walk-in environmental chamber at 25°C (±2°C), with ~70% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D). Adults of STL were allowed to oviposit on clean soybean plants in an oviposition cage. Soybean plants …

A Five-Year Study Of The Ground-Dwelling Beetles (Coleoptera) From A Grassland And An Adjacent Woods In Southern Québec (Canada), Claire Levesque, Gilles-Yvon Levesque
The Great Lakes Entomologist
We present results of the first long-term study on spatiotemporal variations in the composition and structure of ground-dwelling beetle assemblages from a grassland and adjacent woods in eastern Canada. It is the third part of an investigation on the beetle biodiversity using diverse methods between 2006 and 2012. During the entire snow-free season (April/May to October) in 2006–2010, we collected by pitfall trapping 67694 individuals representing 386 Coleoptera species and morphospecies belonging to 35 families in southern Québec. Adventive species represented at least 51.9% of individuals. Carabidae and Staphylinidae were the most abundant families and had the highest species richness …

Ambrosia Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Responses To Ice Storm Damage In Mesic, Mixed Deciduous Forests In Southeast Ohio, United States, Christopher J. Hayes, Richard M. Turcotte
The Great Lakes Entomologist
In the eastern United States abiotic forest disturbances are common and cause extensive tree damage. Freshly broken trees and tree branches attract bark and ambrosia beetles that utilize inner bark and xylem of damaged branches and trees to fill requisite habitat needs. An ice storm in February 2003 on the Wayne National Forest presented an opportunity to study the local ambrosia beetle species and their reaction to this storm event. Ethanol baited Lindgren traps were deployed from 2003-2006 starting in the summer after the storm. Eight native and introduced Scolytinae ambrosia beetle species were trapped in large numbers (>500 …

Impact Of Debarking And Bark Grinding On Survival Of Ips Calligraphus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), Robert A. Haack, Toby Petrice, John Foltz, Hui Ye
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Chipping and debarking of infested woody material such as branches and logs are common sanitation methods used to kill bark- and wood-infesting insects. The sixspined ips, Ips calligraphus (Germar), is a native North American bark beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) that infests several pine (Pinus) species. We evaluated I. calligraphus mortality after debarking and grinding, using 12 recently cut longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) logs that had undergone natural colonization for three weeks in Florida. Initial bark beetle densities were estimated from samples collected the day before debarking. Similar amounts of bark were collected at three steps in …

Phenology And Host Choice Among Common Yet Little Understood Wood Borers (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) In A Midwestern Savanna, Noah I. Finney, Derek W. Rosenberger
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Horned powder-post beetles (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) are a geographically widespread family of wood-boring beetles. While members of this family represent important grain pests, are often intercepted in ports, and may play an important role in ecosystem processes, little work has investigated bostrichid life history in their native ranges. This gap limits our ability to assess ecosystem services and invasiveness. Three native species, Amphicerus bicaudatus (Say), Scobicia bidentata (Horn), and Xylobiops basilaris (Say), are commonly found in savannas in Northern Illinois. Although little is currently known about the life history of S. bidentata, A. bicaudatus and X. basilaris can be minor pests …

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) species assemblages were studied at sites on the Huron-Manistee National Forests in Newaygo County, Michigan. The goal was to monitor changes in carabid diversity on areas where mature red pine (Pinus resinosa Sol. ex Aiton) was removed during the 1996-1997 winter and compare with carabid diversity at nearby natural dry sand prairie sites, natural oak-pine barrens, and uncut red pine stands. The red pine had been planted on dry sand prairie sites during 1940-1950. Sampling with pitfall traps occurred during May-August in both 1996 and 1997, but only July-August in 1999. Overall, 16,259 carabid specimens …
