Aeshna Subarctica (Odonata: Aeshnidae) In Northwestern Wisconsin, Robert D. Dubois, Robbye Johnson, Shaun Putz Jan 2018

Aeshna Subarctica (Odonata: Aeshnidae) In Northwestern Wisconsin, Robert D. Dubois, Robbye Johnson, Shaun Putz

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Nine adult specimens of Aeshna subarctica, a boreal dragonfly typically associated with muskeg wetlands, were collected from Black Lake and Breitzman Lake in northwestern Wisconsin (Douglas County). Viable populations likely exist in both lakes. Oviposition by three females is described. This represents the first published report of A. subarctica for the state of Wisconsin. Because Black Lake lies on the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota, A. subarctica likely occurs in Minnesota as well. Further sampling of acidic peatland habitats for aquatic macroinvertebrates is recommended to document populations of northern at the southern periphery of their ranges. These could function …

Seasonal Response Of Workers Of The Allegheny Mound Ant, Formica Exsectoides (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) To Artificial Honeydews Of Varying Nutritional Content, C. M. Bristow, E. Yanity Jan 2018

Seasonal Response Of Workers Of The Allegheny Mound Ant, Formica Exsectoides (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) To Artificial Honeydews Of Varying Nutritional Content, C. M. Bristow, E. Yanity

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Field colonies of Allegheny mound ants, Formica exsectoides, were tested at monthly intervals throughout the summer to assess their preference for artificial honeydews containing varying compositions of sugars and amino acids. In choice tests, foragers significantly preferred high sugar honeydews early in the season, but shifted in mid-season to a strong preference for high amino acid honeydews. Late-season foragers slightly preferred sugars. When offered in equal concentrations, the honeydew sugar, melezitose, was consistently less attractive to foragers than sucrose. However both sugars were readily fed upon, and appeared to attract ants in an additive fashion. No single amino acid …

A New Flexamia (Homoptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) From Southern Michigan, James A. Bess, K. G. A. Hamilton Jan 2018

A New Flexamia (Homoptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) From Southern Michigan, James A. Bess, K. G. A. Hamilton

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A new species, Flexamia huroni, is described from a prairie fen in south- eastern Michigan. This leafhopper is closely related to the western F. serrata B & T, a specialist on mat muhly (Muhlenbergia richardsonis). Like its sister species, F. huroni was found only in close association with mat muhly, a grass listed as a threatened species in Michigan and Wisconsin. The regional rarity of mat muhly, its association with a globally imperiled plant commnity (prairie fen) and the absence of F. huroni from several fens known to contain this grass, make this new Flexamia a strong …

Fleas were collected from mammals during the period 1990-1992 in two upper peninsula counties. Identified specimens were compared to existing distribution records for both parasite and host. Only those records which are newly documented for county, upper peninsula or Michigan are listed. We report one previously unknown flea species and five new host records for Michigan. One host record is new for the upper peninsula. In addition, seven new host/parasite combinations are recorded for two central upper peninsula counties.

The Sequential Relationship Of Body Oscillations In The Paper Wasp, Polistes Fuscatus (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), Bobbi J. Harding, George J. Gamboa Jan 2018

The Sequential Relationship Of Body Oscillations In The Paper Wasp, Polistes Fuscatus (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), Bobbi J. Harding, George J. Gamboa

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Three kinds of body oscillations by foundresses of the paper wasp, Polistes fuscatus, were analyzed from 100 h of videotapes of 17 multiple- and 16 single-foundress, preworker colonies. The three kinds of oscillations were observed to be temporally proximate only after prey returns. Their sequential occurrence was always antennal drumming (AD), abdominal wagging (AW), and lateral vibration (LV). This sequence is consistent with the hypothesized communicative meanings of ADs, AWs, and LVs. In particular, ADs may signal larvae to withold salivary secretions prior to receiving a liquid meal from an adult female; oscillations AW and LV may signal larvae …

Phenology And Infestation Patterns Of The Cottonwood Twig Borer (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) In Iowa, Joel D. Mcmillin, Michael J. Anderson, Elizabeth E. Butin, Elwood R. Hart

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Cottonwood twig borer, Gypsonoma haimbachiana (Lepidoptera: Totricidae), phenology and infestation patterns on Populus spp. were examined over a 2-year period in Iowa. Weekly sampling of infested shoots during the host growing season verified the existence of five instars. Head capsule size increased nonlinearly from the first to the fifth instar and corresponded to a concomitant geometric increase in the volume of larval feeding galleries. The sampling indicated that the cottonwood twig borer had two generations per year in Iowa. Corresponding with the two generations, two peaks of larval abundance were observed; one in the second week of June and the …

Evidence Of Long Range Transport Of A Dark Morph SwalLowtail Butterfly (Papilio Glaucus) On A Storm Front Into Northern Michigan (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J. Mark Scriber, Mark D. Deering, Aram D. Stump

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A dark morph female Papilio glaucus was captured in the middle of a P. canadensis population in the center of Dickinson County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We are unaware of any dark female ever being captured at this latitude, and none within 400 km has ever before been reported. Morphological wing traits all score this dark female as P. glaucus, with all 31 of the other (yellow) females captured from the same group of nectar sources scoring as P. canadensis. Two diagnostic electrophoretic allozymes (PGD and LDH) show all 24 males to have 100% P. canadensis alleles, and …

Development, Survival And Phenology Of The Sweetclover Weevil Parasitoid, Pygostolus Falcatus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Lindsey R. Milbrath, Michael J. Weiss

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Biennial sweetclovers were widely used for soil improvement and as for- ages in the first half of the 1900s. The introduction of the sweetclover weevil, Sitona cylindricollis, caused a drastic decline in sweetclover acreage. In North Dakota, yellow sweetclover, Melilotus officinalis, is still the legume of choice on organic farms. In an effort to control the weevil, the thelyotokous parasitoid Pygostolus falcatus was imported. Parasitoids were studied for temperature-dependent development, and adult longevity as influenced by temperature and availability of provisions. Development from egg to adult at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C was 58, 28, 22 and 21 …

The Inheritance Of Diagnostic Larval Traits For Interspecific Hybrids Of Papilio Canadensis And P. Glaucus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J. Mark Scriber

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Traits distinguishing the closely related tiger swallowtail butterfly species, Papilio canadensis and P. glaucus, include fixed differences in diagnostic sex-linked and autosomal allozymes as well as sex-linked diapause regulation, and sex-linked differences in oviposition behavior. Larval detoxification abilities for plants of the Salicaceae and Magnoliaceae families are dramatically different and basically diagnostic as well. The distinguishing morphological traits of the adults and larvae have not been genetically characterized. Here we describe the segregation of diagnostic larval banding traits in offspring from the 2 species in their hybrid and reciprocal backcross combinations. Elucidation of genetic basis, and linkage relationships of …

The Hemileuca populations of the Great Lakes region are discussed, and the first map of the distribution of Hemileuca in Wisconsin is provided.

Insects Associated With Butternut And Butternut Canker In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Steven A. Katovich, Michael E. Ostry Jan 2018

Insects Associated With Butternut And Butternut Canker In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Steven A. Katovich, Michael E. Ostry

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Butternut, Juglans cinerea, is being killed throughout its native range in North America by the fungus Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum. In addition to rain splashed spores, it is thought that the fungus may have spread over long distances to infect widely scattered butternut by insect vectors During surveys in 1995 and 1996 we found several insect species in close association with diseased butternut trees, and spores of S. clavigignenti-juglandacearum were isolated in pure culture from the bodies of some of these insects. Potential insect vectors were species in the coleopteran genera Eubulus (Curculionidae), Laemophlaeus (Laemophloeidae), and Glischrochilus (Nitidulidae). Because several …

Burying Beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) Of The Apostle Islands, Wisconsin: Species Diversity, Population Density And Body Size, Stephen T. Trumbo, Shelly Thomas

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Over 2400 burying beetles, representing six species (Nicrophorus defodiens, N. sayi, N orbicollis, N. tomentosus, N vespilloides, and N. pustulatus), were trapped from 27 June to 4 August, 1996 at nine study sites (3 small islands, 3 large islands, and 3 mainland locations) centered around the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in northern Wisconsin. Species diversity was greatest on the mainland and least on the smallest islands « 600 ha). Nicrophorus defodiens, the smallest of the six species, was marginally overrepresented on the smallest islands. We hypothesize that this occurred because N. defodiens can maintain a larger …

Density-Dependent And -Independent Behaviors Of The Adult Karner Blue (Lycaeides Melissa Samuelis) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), Ann B. Swengel, Scott R. Swengel

The Great Lakes Entomologist

At 146 pine-oak barrens in central and northwestern Wisconsin USA during 1988-96, 3973 Karner blues (Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabokov) were found in 95.4 hr of transect surveys during spring and 6896 individuals in 134.8 hr during summer. Of these, 9346 (86%) individuals were first observed copulating, feeding, flushing, flying, or involved in a non-copulatory intraspecific interaction. All these behaviors except copulation showed density-independent influences; all these behaviors also had density-dependent influences. The most frequently significant density-independent variables affecting occurrence of these behaviors were temperature, brood (spring vs. summer), and crepuscularity (time since noon). Male (rather than female or overall) …

Faunal Composition, Wing Polymorphism And Seasonal Abundance Of Some Flea Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Southern Quebec (Canada), Claire Levesque, Gilles-Yvon Levesque

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Chrysomelidae (51 taxa) were collected with flight intercept traps from May through October during 1987-1989, in four sites near a raspberry plantation in southern Quebec. More species and individuals of phytophagous flea beetles occurred in two open sites than at a pine woods-raspberry field boundary and in a pine woods. Longitarsus luridus complex, an immigrant taxon in North America, represented 58% of all captures in the two open sites where both Ranunculus acris and Plantago spp. are its main host plants; this species and Longitarsus rubiginosus were almost exclusively represented by jumping apterous adults in pans of flight intercept traps. …

Butterfly (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, And Satyridae) Faunas Of Three Peatland Habitat Types In The Lake Superior Drainage Basin Of Wisconsin, Jeffrey C. Nekola Jan 2018

Butterfly (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, And Satyridae) Faunas Of Three Peatland Habitat Types In The Lake Superior Drainage Basin Of Wisconsin, Jeffrey C. Nekola

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The butterflies which complete their entire life cycle within peatland habitats were documented in the Lake Superior drainage basin of northwestern Wisconsin. Seventy peatlands were inventoried over the course of the 1996 growing season, and were classified as either muskeg, kettlehole, or coastal sites. Muskeg peatlands were of similar elevation to the surrounding uplands, possessed drier and more nutrient-poor substrates, and were typically larger than other peatland types. Kettlehole peatlands were wetter and had floating Sphagnum mats which fringed lake margins or were in depressions much lower than the surrounding uplands. Coastal peatlands were located in estuaries along the Lake …
