The southern Neotropical cetoniine genus Neocorvicoana Ratcliffe and Micó new genus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae: Gymnetini) is established for three species previously placed in Corvicoana Strand, 1934 (nomen nudum) and Gymnetis MacLeay, 1819: N. chalybea (Kirby), N. reticulata (Schürhoff), and N. tricolor (Schürhoff), new combinations. The type species of the new genus is N. reticulata (Kirby). Corvicoana rudolfi (Frölich) is transferred to the genus Gymnetis. Corvicoana suavis (Schürhoff) and C. castanea (Schürhoff) are junior synonyms of N. chalybea. We include a taxonomic key to the species, nomenclatural history, descriptions, illustrations, and commentary.

Book Review: Fauna Iberica, Volume 14: Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea I. (Martin-Piera, F. And J. I. Lopez-Colon), Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
At over 500 pages, this is only the first volume of a probable three volume Spanish language treatment of the Scarabaeoidea of the Iberian peninsula. Volume one is a comprehensive and detailed piece of work in the grand tradition of faunas and floras. This first volume treats all of the "lower" scarabaeoids (Laparosticti) except for the Aphodiidae and Aegialiidae, which will appear in the next scarabaeoid volume. The third volume will treat the "higher" scarabs (Pleurosticti).
The book begins with a brief overview of the morphology and life cycle of scarabaeoids followed by a discussion on various relationship hypotheses of …

Review Of Hazel Rue, Bomby The Bombardier Beetle, Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Well, I thought that the style of brainwashing seen in this revisionist book went out with the 1950s Cold War era. However, the Institute for Creation Research demonstrates that brainwashing is alive and well as it continues to wage its own cold war against reason in order to replace it with superstition. In this highly disjointed little book, the target is young children, which makes the authors’ sin of deliberate ignorance even more reprehensible. Educating children about the wonders of nature is a delightful endeavor, but here it is a vehicle for blatantly meshing pseudo-natural history with creationist dogma that …

Review Of Cetoniimania, A Publication Devoted To Cetoniinae, Valginae, And Trichiinae., Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
This beautifully produced publication devoted to Cetoniinae (Scarabaeidae) and their relatives is the brainchild of Robert Alexis (editor) and Michel Delpont (director of publication). Volume 1 (No. 1, 52 pp) was printed in September 2000 and contained articles clarifying the status of Potosia cuprea Fabr. (with magnificent color illustrations of beetles, habitats, and range maps), collecting on Krk island in Yugoslavia, the cetoniine fauna of Lesbos island in Greece, and Cetoniidarum Specierum Lexicon, which is a supplemental but integral part of Cetoniimania in which new taxa are described in both French and English (again, with excellent color illustrations and line …

Cladistic Analysis Of The Pennatulacean Genus Renilla Lamarck, 1816 (Coelenterata, Octocorallia), Carlos D. Pérez, Federico C. Ocampo
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
The genus Renilla is an interesting taxon for phylogenetic studies, which includes six species endemic to America with an anphiamerican distribution (Pacific–Atlantic Ocean). A cladistic analysis of Renilla Lamarck, 1816 using eight characters from external morphology produced one cladogram (length 14, CI = 0.92, RI = 0.87), and the characters were polarized using Echinoptilum macintoshii Hubrecht, 1885 as an outgroup. In the cladogram the following phylogenetic sequence results: ((R. koellikeri (R. muelleri, R. musaica)) (R. octodentata (R. reniformis, R. tentaculata))).

Chagas disease is a major public health challenge for most Latin American countries. An initiative for the coordinated control of Chagas disease transmission throughout the Andean countries was launched in 1997. Since the early 1990s, control measures based on elimination of domestic/peridomestic triatomine colonies and screening of donor blood by serological testing have resulted in a reduction in incidence of ~70% in the Southern Cone countries (WHO, 1991; Dias & Schofield, 1999; Moncayo, 1999; WHO/CTD, 2000).

Distribution, Ecology, And Population Dynamics Of The American Burying Beetle [Nicrophorus Americanus Olivier (Coleoptera, Silphidae)] In South-Central Nebraska, Usa, Jon C. Bedick, Brett C. Ratcliffe, W. Wyatt Hoback, Leon G. Higley
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
The endangered American burying beetle, Nicrophorus americanus Olivier, was previously widespread throughout eastern North America. In the past century numbers of this beetle have drastically declined and currently remnant populations are known from only six states despite intensive surveying efforts conducted for the last nine years. Efforts aimed at discovering and managing remnant populations have been generally limited by a lack of knowledge concerning N. americanus biology. We used baited pitfall traps to define the range of the Gothenburg, Nebraska, population of N. americanus. Using mark-recapture techniques, we estimate that the annual Gothenburg population consists of more than one …

Book Review: The Cetoniine Beetles Of The World (Sakai, K. And S. Nagai), Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
What a book! This fabulous contribution by Sakai and Nagai is Mushi-Sha's third volume in its Iconographic Series of Insects. The first volume was a similarly stunning treatment of the stag beetles (Lucanidae) of the world. In the cetoniine volume, the authors have illustrated, with the most superb photos imaginable, nearly 2,000 color photographs of cetoniine scarabs. The number of species illustrated is 1,704, and many of these are represented by multiple pictures to show color and pattern variation or sexual differences. Photos of 59 type specimens are also included. In what has to be a remarkable achievement, ALL of …

"Insects" From Atlas Of The Sand Hills, Brett C. Ratcliffe
"Insects" From Atlas Of The Sand Hills, Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Because the Sand Hills are, for the most part, a treeless landscape of grass-covered sand dunes, most of the insects are adapted to sandy habitats and a dry, continental climate, as well as to the kinds of plants and other animals that live there. Unlike most forest-adapted species, insects in the Sand Hills tolerate drier and windier conditions and greater solar radiation. They have also been successful in surviving the periodic fires that are so necessary for maintaining native grasslands. In fact, the mosaic of habitats partially created by fire has probably contributed to increased insect diversity in the Sand …

Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Subtribe Rutelina And Revision Of The Rutela Generic Groups (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini), Mary Liz Jameson
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
This work provides a comprehensive review of the phylogeny and classification of the subtribe Rutelina and a revision of the genus Rutela (Rutelina). Because of the lack of a thorough study of all taxa in the subtribe and because of differing philosophies regarding categorical levels, the classification of the subtribe is currently unstable. Phylogenetic analyses of 32 representative genera or subgenera in the tribe Rutelini were conducted as a means of: (1) resolving classification conflicts within the subtribe Rutelina, (2) identifying monophyletic groups within the subtribe, and (3) identifying monophyletic lineages within the tribe Rutelini. Analyses were conducted using 128 …

Book Review: An Inordinate Fondness For Beetles (Evans, A.V. And C.L. Bellamy), Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
This nicely produced book is a visual celebration of beetles. Consider that it has 140 color photographs on 98 color plates . . . and 26 of those plates are of scarabs. Excellent! One should not construe my possible bias (or perhaps even that of the first author) as too narrow in its focus because the breadth of coverage of this volume is truly beetlewide.
In the Prologue, the authors briefly review the timeless fascination that humans have had with beetles. They note that most people are not aware of the diversity of beetles and are not impressed by such …
