Ataeniopsis Edistoi (Cartwright) In Florida (Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae), Paul E. Skelley
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Ataenius edistoi Cartwright (1974) was described from a series of eight specimens collected near the Edisto River in South Carolina. All were "collected under surface litter on sandy but hard ground along the roadside". According to Cartwright (1974) attempts to collect the species at light at the type locality were not successful, indicating the species does not come to light. The species was transferred to the genus Ataeniopsis Petrovitz by Stebnicka (2003) in a revision of the genus. Ataeniopsis differs from Ataenius Harold in that the apical half of the pygidium in Ataeniopsis is smooth and glabrous, while in Ataenius …

Checklist Of The World Anoplognathini, Andrew B. T. Smith
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
My research involves the tribe Anoplognathini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae), a group endemic to the Neotropical and Australian realms. A generic level phylogenetic analysis of the world Anoplognathini (Rutelinae) is in progress. A preliminary analysis has been conducted using morphological and molecular characters. The analysis suggests that the Australian and Neotropical groups are paraphyletic. Adjustments will have to be made in the classification of this tribe to reflect the natural relationships.

Insects And The Native Vegetation Of Nebraska, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Paul C. Hammond
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
The principal plant biomes in Nebraska are briefly reviewed. The relationships of insects, particularly scarab beetles and butterflies, to these biomes are discussed, especially as it relates to their distributions. Human-induced alteration of habitat has significantly influenced the present distributions of both plants and insects relative to their historical distributions at the time of Euro-american colonization of Nebraska in the mid-1800s. Examples of range expansion or contraction are presented for exemplar taxa of scarab beetles and butterflies

Observations On Possible Myrmecophily In Stephanucha Pilipennis Kraatz (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) In Western Nebraska, M. J. Paulsen
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Little has been published on the life history of the five currently recognized species of Stephanucha Burmeister. Skelley (1991) published the most thorough treatment to date for S. thoracica Casey (recently synonymized with S. areata (F.) by Harpootlian 2001). Skelley located larvae in the mounds of the pocket gopher, Geomys pinetus Rafnesque, in Florida and was the first to describe an immature stage for the genus. Published accounts of Stephanucha species biology are consistent with respect to spring emergence, presence in sandy habitats, and a potential lack of adult feeding or liquid feeding (Lago et ul. 1979; Skelley 1991). Skelley …

The superfamily Scarabaeoidea is a large, diverse, cosmopolitan group of beetles. Scarabaeoids are adapted to most habitats, and they are fungivores, herbivores, necrophages, coprophages, saprophages, and some are carnivores. They are widely distributed, even living in the Arctic in animal burrows. Some scarabs exhibit parental care and sociality. Some are myrmecophilous, termitophilous, or ectoparasitic. Many possess extravagant horns, others are able to roll into a compact ball, and still others are highly armored for inquiline life. Some are agricultural pests that may destroy crops while others are used in the biological control of dung and dung flies. Scarabaeoids are popular …
