Identification Of Mosquitoes Of Anopheles Gambiae Species Complex A And B By Analysis Of Cuticular Components, D. A. Carlson, M. W. Service
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Two important vectors of malaria in Africa, Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles arabiensis (Diptera: Culicidae), often occur sympatrically and cannot be distinguished morphologically. A chemical method was developed to identify individual laboratory-reared adult males or females of either species by extraction and analysis of cuticular components with gas chromatography. Statistically significant differences were seen between species when selected pairs of peaks were compared.

Honeydew Excretion Measurement Techniques For Determining Differential Feeding Activity Of Biotypes Of Nilaparvata Lugens On Rice Varieties, P. Paguia, M. D. Pathak, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Techniques to quantify the feeding activity of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) on rice varieties as based on honeydew excretion are described, and their potential as a bioassay for biotype identification are discussed. Honeydew, excreted on filter paper, was stained with ninhydrin and quantified by measuring the area (mm2) or by weighing. Results were satisfactory but the methods were extremely tedious. Volumetric measurement of honeydew with micropipettes was less sensitive. The color intensity of one μliter honeydew streaked on filter paper and treated with 0.001% ninhydrin was determined with a Fujiox Densitometer. The method was relatively simple and rapid …

A Survey Of The Alfalfa Seed Chalcid In Central Kansas, Gary Brewer
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Twenty-three central Kansas counties were surveyed for the alfalfa seed chalcid, Bruchophagus roddi Guss. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) and its parasites from August 28 to September 6, 1979. The seed chalcid or evidence of its presence was found in all counties surveyed. Two hymenopterans, Tetrastichus bruchophagi Gahn (Eulophidae) and Liodontomerus perplexus Gahn (Torymidae), were the major parasites found; T. bruchophagi was about twice as common as L. perplex us. Other unidentified hymenopteran and dipteran parasites were occasionally found. In four counties, the seed chalcid was found free of parasites while in five other counties, only one parasite species was found with …

Distribution Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries And Ants At Two Elevations In Jamaica, Kathleen H. Keeler
Distribution Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries And Ants At Two Elevations In Jamaica, Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Frequencies of plants with extrafloral nectaries were determined for two elevations in Jamaica. Extrafloral nectaries were found on 0.28 of the plants at sea level (Happy Grove, Portland) and 0.00 of the plants at 1310 m (Whitfield Hall, St. Thomas). Ant abundance, as indicated by discovery of and recruitment to baits, was greater at the lower elevation site. However, despite the apparent absence of plants with extrafloral nectaries, there were abundant ants at 1310 m.

Effect Of Cold Acclimation On Cold Tolerance Of Laboratory-Reared Diapausing Pink Bollworms, Robert J. Wright, H. M. Graham
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Cold acclimation and cold tolerance were studied in laboratory-reared diapausing pink bollworms, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), conditioned at 5°, 10°, and 15° C for 2,4, and 8 wk. Larval mortality, abnormal pupation and total mortality from 2-h exposure to sub-zero temperatures increased similarly as the temperature decreased from _6° to -15° C. Exposure to -9° C and above had little effect. The effect of cold conditioning on cold tolerance was most important at the _12° C exposure. Conditioning at 5°, 10°, and 15° C reduced total mortality after exposure to _12° C, compared to unconditioned larvae. Conditioning of larvae at 10° …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The behavior of carbofuran residues in rice plants treated by broadcast, soil incorporation, and root-zone application, and by seedling root-soak and root-coat technique was studied. Placement of insecticide in gelatin capsules in the root zone gave good persistence (about 60 days) and leaf residue (as much as 45 ppm at 10 days after treatment). Among the methods tested it also controlled early season pests best and gave the highest grain yields. Soil incorporation and root-zone placement with a liquid-band applicator was also more efficient than paddy-water broadcast in getting insecticide to the plant; soil incorporation provided slightly longer persistence (60 days) …

The species specificity of trail pheromones of fire ants, Solenopsis spp., has been studied by Wilson (1962; Anim. Behav. 10: 137-47) and Barlin, Blum, and Brand (1976; J, Insect Physiol. 22: 839-44). Our study, stimulated by taxonomic advances since Wilson's work and conducted concurrently with that of Barlin et al., is presented here to confirm and supplement the latters' observations, and to report some differences in results.

Genetic Method For The Preferential Elimination Of Females Of Anopheles Albimanus, J. A. Seawright, P. E. Kaiser, D. A. Dame, C. S. Lofgren
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Recent field experiments demonstrated the possibility of using the sterile male method for the control of Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann, the most impor- tant vector of human malaria in Central America. Until now there was no practical method for excluding females from the releases of sterile males. A genetic method was developed for the preferential elimination of females during any of the four life stages. This genetic sexing system utilizes propoxur (o-isopropoxyphenyl methyl- carbamate) susceptibility as a recessive conditional lethal, a T(Y:2R) translocation, and an In(2R) inversion. The propoxur resistance allele (dominant) was linked to the Y chromosome via a radiation-induced …

Anatomy Of The Adults Of Loxagrotis Albicosta, C.Y. Oseto, T.J. Helms
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
LEPIDOPTERA are divided into the major suborders Monotrysia and Ditrysia (Borner, 1939). The vast majority of Lepidoptera belong to the Ditrysia. The Noctuidae, which is the largest family in the order, is probably the most destructive (Metcalf, et aI., 1962). It includes Loxagrotis albicosta (Smith), the western bean cutworm, originally a pest of field beans, which has become a relatively serious pest of corn in southwestern and central Nebraska (Hagen and Roselle, 1972). Adults emerge from early July to late August, and eggs, which are deposited on the upper sides of corn leaves, hatch in approximately I week. The newly …
