Insecta Mundi

Nomenclatural changes are proposed and herein implemented for several beetles in the family Lampyridae (Coleoptera). Corrections of authorship are proposed for Psilocladus marginatus (Lewis), Psilocladus ruficollis (Kiesenwetter), and Dryptelytra fulvipennis E. Olivier. Dates of publication are corrected for Magnoculus marginatus (Guérin-Méneville), Psilocladus calvus Kirsch, Psilocladus peruvianus Kirsch, and Vesta vitellinothorax (Perty) a synonym of Vesta thoracica (G. A. Olivier). “Dodacles grandjeani E. Olivier” is found to be a nomen nudum, which actually refers to Dryptelytra grandjeani (E. Olivier).

Its relationship with other species in the genus is briefly discussed. The validity and ranking of the genus Lobidion Génier, 2010, originally described from a single female, is discussed based on the discovery of male specimens, which lead us to reclassify it as a monotypic subgenus of Ateuchus, becoming Ateuchus (Lobidion), new rank, with the only included species becoming Ateuchus (Lobidion) punctatissimus (Génier, 2010) new combination …

Melipona Beecheii Bennett (Hymenoptera: Apidae): Origen, Estudios Y Meliponicultura En Cuba, Julio A. Genaro, Walberto Loriga

Insecta Mundi

Melipona beecheii Bennett is a common bee, native to Mexico and some parts of Central America. There has been much speculation about his presence in Cuba and Jamaica. The origin, the studies carried out, and the development of meliponiculture in Cuba are reviewed. The main diagnostic characteristics between M. beecheii and Apis mellifera Linnaeus, the only two highly social and domesticated species in Cuba, are presented. The historical trend has been the independent capture of colonies of M. beecheii, in the wild, by untrained farmers. These colonies are kept inside the trunks or branches of the trees that the …

Using Colony Monitoring Devices To Evaluate The Impacts Of Land Use And Nutritional Value Of Forage On Honey Bee Health, Matthew D. Smart, Clint R.V. Otto, Robert Cornman, Deborah Iwanowicz

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Colony monitoring devices used to track and assess the health status of honey bees are becoming more widely available and used by both beekeepers and researchers. These devices monitor parameters relevant to colony health at frequent intervals, often approximating real time. The fine-scale record of hive condition can be further related to static or dynamic features of the landscape, such as weather, climate, colony density, land use, pesticide use, vegetation class, and forage quality. In this study, we fit commercial honey bee colonies in two apiaries with pollen traps and digital scales to monitor floral resource use, pollen quality, and …

The Six-Legged Subject: A Survey Of Secondary Science Teachers’ Incorporation Of Insects Into U.S. Life Science Instruction, Erin Ingram, Douglas Golick Jan 2018

The Six-Legged Subject: A Survey Of Secondary Science Teachers’ Incorporation Of Insects Into U.S. Life Science Instruction, Erin Ingram, Douglas Golick

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

To improve students’ understanding and appreciation of insects, entomology education efforts have supported insect incorporation in formal education settings. While several studies have explored student ideas about insects and the incorporation of insects in elementary and middle school classrooms, the topic of how and why insects are incorporated in secondary science classrooms remains relatively unexplored. Using survey research methods, this study addresses the gap in the literature by (1) describing in-service secondary science teachers’ incorporation of insects in science classrooms; (2) identifying factors that support or deter insect incorporation and (3) identifying teachers’ preferred resources to support future entomology education …

Understanding And Controlling The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necropia Rufipes), Alexandria Hammel

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

The Red Legged Ham Beetle (Necrobia rufipes), RLHB has fascinated me since the moment we met. The beautiful greens and blues that sparkle from its elytra, the sharp and fast red legs that flash just below the body and just last month I was able to see a RLHB in flight for the first time. My squeal of delight was not left un-mocked by my coworkers. This beetle is a detrimental and determined stored product pest. One that, we in the pet food business, don’t take lightly. This generated a need for control in warehousing as distribution but …

RNA interference (RNAi) was discovered almost 20 years ago and has been exploited worldwide to silence genes in plants and animals. A decade later, it was found that transforming plants with an RNAi construct targeting an insect gene could protect the plant against feeding by that insect. Production of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) in a plant to affect the viability of a herbivorous animal is termed trans-kingdom RNAi (TK-RNAi). Since this pioneering work, there have been many further examples of successful TK-RNAi, but also reports of failed attempts and unrepeatable experiments. Recently, three laboratories have shown that producing dsRNA in a …

Genetics And Mechanisms Underlying Transmission Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus By The Wheat Curl Mite, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Gary L. Hein Jan 2018

Genetics And Mechanisms Underlying Transmission Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus By The Wheat Curl Mite, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Gary L. Hein

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV, genus Tritimovirus; family Potyviridae) is the most economically important virus of wheat in the Great Plains region of the USA. WSMV is transmitted by the eriophyid wheat curl mite (WCM), Aceria tosichella Keifer. In contrast to Hemipteran-borne plant viruses, the mode and mechanism of eriophyid mite transmission of viruses have remained poorly understood, mostly due to difficulty of working with these ~200 μm long microscopic creatures. Among eriophyid-transmitted plant viruses, relatively extensive work has been performed on population genetics of WCMs, WSMV determinants involved in WCM transmission, and localization of WSMV virions and …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The Department of Entomology of the Smithsonian Institution (SI) National Museum of Natural History granted an Offsite Collection Enhancement Pogram (OEP) to the State Museum at the University of Nebraska (UNSM). TheOEP consists of the renewable ten-year loan of a large collection which is bound to a detailed, 19 point Memorandum of Understanding between both parties and signed off institutionally by Museum Directors. The basic idea is that if part of the U.S. National Collection has no ongoing resident active research and there exists a center of expertise at another institution, it is most prudent to allow this off-site center …

Comparing The Effects Of Two Tillage Operations On Beneficial Epigeal Arthropod Communities And Their Associated Ecosystem Services In Sugar Beets, Rudolph J. Pretorius, Gary L. Hein, Erin E. Blankenship, Foster F. Purrington, Robert G. Wilson, Jeff D. Bradshaw

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Beneficial arthropods provide important ecosystem services in terms of arthropod pest and weed management, but these services can be adversely affected by farming practices such as tillage. This study investigated the impact of two tillage operations (zone tillage and moldboard plow) on the activity density of several beneficial, epigeal arthropod taxa, and postdispersal weed seed and prey removal in sugar beet agroecosystems. In addition, four omnivorous ground beetle species were selected for a weed-seed choice feeding assay, whereas a single species was selected for a weed-seed age preference assay. Ground beetles were the most commonly collected taxon (via pitfall sampling), …
