Survey-based soybean insect losses were collected following the 2013 growing season to provide a record of insect pressure and soybean management practices for the year. This survey has been conducted annually in all participating states for at least the last 3 years and has been conducted in Mississippi for 10 years. The 2013 survey represents more than 10 million soybean acres across the southern United States. Overall, the 2013 survey showed corn earworm to be the most costly insect pest in the region for the third consecutive year. The stink bug complex and soybean looper were the second and third …

An animal model to study cutaneous reactions to bed bug biting is currently not available. This study was initiated to evaluate Swiss-Webster (outbred) mice as a model organism for research on reactivity to bed bug bites and bed bug salivary gland extract (SGE). In this study, 1-2 bed bugs were fed on each of eight mice in a location on their backs which had been shaved; eight mice were injected intra-dermally (ID) with SGE in a similar location, and four control mice had phosphate buffered saline (PBS) injected also in a similar location. This procedure was repeated 3 times using …

One of the primary tick vectors of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), Dermacentor variabilis (Say), is found throughout much of North America, including Mississippi, where numerous cases are reported annually. Although RMSF has long been documented in the US, it may be confused with other zoonoses, which sometimes delays treatment. Therefore, detailed documentation of the distribution and infection rates of this tick is important to public health officials. In this study, two sites in northern Mississippi, the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge and Wall Doxey State Park, were surveyed weekly by drag cloth for a one year period …

The Mississippi Entomological Museum (MEM) serves as a screening and identification center for the USDA-APHIS (Eastern Region). The screening center provides screening services for eastern states participating in Cooperative Agricultural Pest Surveys (CAPS). Each year thousands of samples are screened for exotic pests. Results from the 2012 and 2013 wood boring beetle surveys are reported here, including new state and county records. Four species representing new state records were detected in samples in 2012: Ambrosiodmus minor (Stebbing) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) and an unidentified species of Ambrosiodmus, probably A. lewisi (Blandford) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), were found in Alabama, and Xyleborinus octiesdentatus …

The spread and establishment of alien species into new regions is becoming commonplace with increased global trade and a warming climate. Ants are among the most successful of these species due to their relatively small size and adaptability. The southeastern United States has been particularly susceptible to the introduction of alien ant species as a result of its geographic location and large number of shipping ports. A subset of these alien species is considered invasive based on their overall negative impacts to natural ecosystems and to humans. During recent years, several of these species have shown marked dispersal in the …

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently approved, for areas of the Southern U.S., a 5% seed-mixture (Refuge-In-A-Bag or RIB) combined with a 20% external structured refuge for pyramided Bt corn. In this analysis we compared the durability of a pyramided PIP (plant incorporated protectant) deployed with a 20% refuge versus a 5% RIB and an additional 20% external refuge when the larval movement proportion was varied. The results showed that when the PIP expressed a very high dose (overall mortality of susceptibles = 99.99%) and larval movement was 50% and 90%, the 20% external refuge was 38% and 52% more …

Penetration Of Termiticide Treatments Into Gravel Used As A Construction Fill Material, Chris J. Peterson
Midsouth Entomologist
The penetration of five termiticidal suspensions (Termidor, Premise, Talstar, Phantom, and Transport) was examined in packed columns in the laboratory, in which each column incorporated a top gravel layer and a lower soil layer. This simulates common building practices in some parts of the United States. The highest doses were usually found at the top of the soil layer beneath the gravel, indicating that the applied suspension (at either the normal labeled volume or a higher volume allowed for treating gravel) penetrated to the soil below at levels sufficient to kill termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae). The active ingredients were retained by …

A survey was undertaken in 2010 to assess the composition of the ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) community at two research sites in southern Mississippi. Inexpensive beetle traps were constructed and fitted with ethanol lures, and bi-weekly collections were made from March through November. The granulate ambrosia beetle [Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky)] was the most abundant xyleborine species at both sites, with more specimens collected at the Poplarville site. Other species were more abundant at the McNeill site. The black twig borer [Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff)] was the second-most abundant species in Mississippi, yet has not been reported from collections by collaborators …

Bed Bugs (Cimex Lectularius L.) In Mississippi: Survey Of The Scope, Extent, And Control Of The Problem, J. Goddard
Midsouth Entomologist
Bed bugs are blood-sucking insects which had nearly disappeared in developed countries until fairly recently, when a dramatic increase and spread of the insects began in the 1980s. Since then, bed bugs increasingly have been reported inside U.S. hotel rooms, dormitories, and apartments. In this study, entomologists at the Mississippi Department of Health, as well as licensed pest control personnel throughout the state, were queried for information about the scope and extent of bed bug infestations throughout Mississippi for the time period from 1 September 2010 through 28 February 2011. In addition, pest management personnel were asked to provide information …

Ten Christmas tree farms were selected as research sites across Mississippi. At each site a 10-percent inventory was established. Plots were chosen randomly, and all imported fire ant (IFA) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Solenopsis spp.) mound positions inside the plot boundaries were captured as global positioning system (GPS) points. Mound points, along with their corresponding volumes (cm3), were recorded and uploaded into ESRI® ArcMap for analysis. Thirteen variables were selected to represent the heterogeneity of these landscapes. Among those variables, the species, height, and diameter of every Christmas tree located inside a plot were recorded, along with average grass height, distance to …

Notes On Fungal Infestations In Germinating Corn (Zea Mays L.) Seed Used For Rearing Spotted Cucumber Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), D. E. Fleming, J. T. Reed
Midsouth Entomologist
Inability to manage fungal growth (Aspergillus, Fusarium and Rhizopus spp.) in germinating corn seed used as larval medium in a laboratory colony of spotted cucumber beetles (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber [Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae]) stimulated experimentation to evaluate the efficacy of laboratory fungicide seed treatment and its components with and without agitation, and to determine whether the incidence of fungus in germinating seed differed between seed lots or varieties. The possibility of fungi residing in cracks in corn seed, within the corn seed beyond the reach of fungicidal solutions, and in pits in the exochorion of beetle eggs is discussed. Fungicides reduced …

Described here is a new delivery method for ant toxicants consisting of an inert carrier, an attractant, and a toxicant. Unlike baits, this system does not contain a food source, but uses ant to ant contact rather than trophallaxis as the mechanism for horizontal dispersal of the toxicant through the colony. We evaluated six potential attractants and found that only triolein increased treated filter paper removal by the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). On corn cob grits, removal was optimized at a rate of 60 μl triolein/g grits. In laboratory assays, mortality of fire ants offered …
