There is a new tick-borne disease similar to Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) that was recently described from the southern United States. Cases of the disease are a subset of reported RMSF cases and therefore constitute a “disease within a disease.” The causative agent of this RMSF-like disease, however, is Rickettsia parkeri as opposed to R. rickettsii, the pathogen causing RMSF. Both organisms are in the spotted fever group (SFG) of rickettsiae, cross-react in laboratory tests used to diagnose RMSF, and therefore are difficult to differentiate serologically. The new malady has been tentatively named “American Boutonneuse Fever” (ABF) based on …

Tarnished plant bugs (Hemiptera: Miridae) and southern green stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) infest cotton and cause similar symptoms. To increase our understanding of the feeding preferences of these insects so that thresholds and management strategies for these species can be improved, southern green stink bug and tarnished plant bug adults and nymphs were caged on cotton plants containing both squares and bolls. At harvest, bolls were analyzed for lint yield and quality in relation to their position on the plant when infested. The five nodes immediately below the infested flower node (small bolls when infested) had fewer undamaged bolls on …

Collection Of Moodna Bisinuella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) From Field Corn In Mississippi, M. Willrich Siebert, R. L. Brown
Midsouth Entomologist
Observation of Moodna bisinuella Hampson in Mississippi was based on specimens collected near Greenville (Washington Co.), Mississippi during August 2008. Larvae were collected from ears of field corn, Zea mays L., reared to adults, and identified by using characters observed from the dissection of the male genitalia. Little information is available to describe larval ecology, injury to field corn, available control measures, or distribution across Mississippi.

In his 1995 novel Microserfs, Douglas Coupland describes what it means to be “one-point-oh”: the first to do something really new and cool. In the book, Coupland’s computer coder characters leave the security of software giant Microsoft to start a new company and launch their own new and cool software; a version 1.0. The same atmosphere of one-point-oh can apply to the launch of a new journal. Perhaps it can be called a Volume 1, Number 1, Page 1 atmosphere, or 1(1):1. How exactly that should be pronounced in a cool one-point-oh way I’ll leave up to you. Either way, …

A Survey Of Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Species And Social Forms Across Four Counties In East-Central Mississippi, T. O. Menzel, D. C. Cross, J. Chen, M. A. Caprio

Molecular technology allows researchers to definitively identify red imported fire ants as either monogyne or polygyne based on the alleles present at the single gene Gp-9. This technique has not previously been applied to hybrid individuals of the red and black imported fire ants. Specimens were collected from 81 imported fire ant colonies from 27 locations over a four county area within the imported fire ant hybrid zone in east-central Mississippi. Gas chromatograph analysis of cuticular hydrocarbons and venom alkaloids was used to determine the species or species hybrid status of all colonies. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to …

Two New Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) Feeding Indexes For Woods Of Varying Palatability, C. J. Peterson, P. D. Gerard
Midsouth Entomologist
In order for bait matrices, treated wood and resistant wood species to be properly evaluated in the laboratory for termite resistance or palatability, reliable tests that can distinguish between food choices must be developed; otherwise, inferior products may enter the marketplace. In the current study, a bioassay method is proposed that allows the calculation of two new feeding indexes, a Wood Resistance Index (WRI) and a Termite Preference Index (TPI). These indexes incorporate the feeding behavior of termites in both choice and no-choice situations. In tests using Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), the WRI consistently provided statistically significant comparisons between three wood …

Pogonomyrmex badius (Latreille)was considered to be a relatively common species in central and southern Mississippi before the introduction of the imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta and S. richteri, and before subsequent area wide control measures, but it has not been reported from the mainland since the mid 1930's. Recent collections in a relic sandhill community in Smith County have resulted in the rediscovery of this species in central Mississippi. Colony characteristics and microhabitat of P. badius are described. Observations of P. badius and other ant species found walking on the P. badius craters are provided. Seeds found in middens and …
