Neem Seed Extract Spray Applications As Low-Cost Inputs For Management Of The Flower Thrips In The Cowpea Crop, R. C. Saxena, E. L. Kidiavai

In field trials conducted at the Experiment Station and in a farmer's field at Mbita near the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya, applications of 2% or 3% neem seed extract (NSE) @ 200 l/ha with a knapsack sprayer at 38, 47 and 51 days after emergence (DE) of the cowpea crop or 5%, 10% or 20% NSE sprayed @ 10 l/ha with an ultra-low-volume applicator at 31, 39 and 49 DE often significantly reduced the number of larvae of the flower thrips, Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom), in cowpea flowers recorded 2 days after each treatment. Also fewer adults occurred in flowers …

Western Flower Thrips, David F. Cook, Ian Dadour, Ernie Steiner, Brett Scourse
Western Flower Thrips, David F. Cook, Ian Dadour, Ernie Steiner, Brett Scourse
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western flower thrips (Franklinislla occidentalis Pergands) is a serious pest of floral and vegetable crops. From its original habitat in western USA it has now spread throughout North America, Mexico, New Zealand and Europe. David Cook, Ian Dadour, Ernis Steiner and Brett Scourse outline its biology and the control options available.

Cotton Rising From The Ashes, Georgina Wilson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Two hundred thousand dollars worth of quality cotton was deliberately destroyed by burning in the Kimberley last December. The same thing will probably happen again this year, but there will ne no cries of arson and police will not be seeking the perpetrators. Georgina Wilson reports on the emerging cotton industry on the Ord.

Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus And Its Management, Lindrea Latham, Roger Jones
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In 1993, western flower thrips, an important pest of horticultural crops, was found in Western Australia. Since then there has been an upsurge in damsging virus disease epidemics caused by tomato spotter wilt virus in horticultural crops. This has occurred because western flower thrips is a more effective vector of tomato spotted wilt virus than other thrips species. Lindrea Latham and Roger Jones outline the symptoms, spread and management of this serious virus disease in vegetables and ornamentals.

Options For Pest Management In Pastures, Phil Michael, Mike Grimm, Mike Hyder, Peter Doyle
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Redlegged eath mit, blue oat ite, lucern flea and aphids damage pastures across southern Australia, and it has been estimated that they cause annual losses to the Australian wool industry alone of over $200 million.
Redlegged earth mite is without doubt the most serious of the four pests. Peter DoPhil Michael, Mike Grimm, Mike Hyder and Peter Doyle discuss intergrated management options to control these pests.

Estimation Of Rice Yield Losses Due To The African Rice Gall Midge, Orseolia Oryzivora Harris And Gagne, Souleymane Nacro, E. A. Heinrichs, D. Dakouo
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The African rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzivora Harris and Gagne (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is an important pest of rice, Oryza sativa, in Burkina Faso as well as other countries in West and East Africa. In spite of its importance, little is known regarding the relationship between gall midge populations and grain yield losses. To determine yield losses, the gall midge was reared in cages, and adult midges were placed on caged plants of the rice variety ITA 123 at different population levels. The seven treatments consisted of different numbers of insects infested on the plants: 0 insect pairs (noninfested check), …

Inheritance of aphid resistance and allelic relationships among sources of resistance was studied in the parents, F1, F2, F3, and backcross populations of cowpea crosses. Each 4-day old seedling was infested with five fourth-instar aphids. Seedling reaction was recorded 14-16 days after infestation when the susceptible check was killed. The segregation data from eight crosses between resistant and susceptible cowpea cultivars indicated that aphid resistance was inherited as a monogenic dominant trait. Segregation data from crosses among eight resistant cultivars indicated that one or two loci and modifier(s) were involved in the expression of resistance to aphids. It was suggested …

Reproductive Performance And Population Dynamics Of Cowpea Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) On Leaf Extracts Of Resistant And Susceptible Cowpeas, I. Billy Annan, Ward M. Tingey, George A. Schaefers, Kailash N. Saxena

Membrane feeding studies were conducted to determine the effects of raw juices and chemical extracts of leaves of aphid-resistant (ICV-12) and aphid- susceptible (ICV-1) cultivars of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.)], on the survival, growth, and reproduction of cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch. Life table and demographic statistics of the cohort population and subsequent generations were estimated. Compared to ICV-1, the leaf juices and chemical extracts of ICV-12 exhibited significant (P ≤ 0.05) adverse effects on aphid survival, growth, and reproduction. Raw leaf juice and ethyl acetate extract of ICV-12 in both water and sucrose significantly (P ≤ 0.05) limited …

1,8-Cineole: An Attractant For The Banana Weevil, Cosmopolites Sordidus, Isaiah O. Ndiege, Willam J. Budenberg, Dalmas O. Otieno, Ahmed Hassanali
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
1,8-Cineole was identified as one of the electrophysiologically active components of the volatiles from banana cultivars susceptible to the banana weevil. It was also shown to be an attractant for the banana weevil Comopolites sordidus in laboratory behavioural bioassays. The resistant cultivar did not contain 1,8-cineole. β-Phellandrene, which exhibited electrophysiological activity, but did not show any attraction to the banana weevil, was found only in the resistant banana cultivar.
