Population Dynamics Of Oryzomys Palustris And Microtus Pennsylvanicus On The Eastern Shore Of Virginia, John A. March Jr.
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The population dynamics of Oryzomys palustris, the marsh rice rat, and of Microtus pennsylvanicus, the meadow vole, were determined during a year-long mark-and-recapture study on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Three nights of trapping per month were conducted on two live trap grids totaling 5456 total trap nights. The grids were located on Nature Conservancy land, one in Oyster, and the second at Steelman's Landing, which is east of Townsend in Northampton County Virginia. Trapped animals were evaluated using established criteria. Reproductive activity, age and sex composition, and density of the population, capture probability, survival rate, and recruitment were determined. …
Fine Root Biomass Distribution And Production Along A Barrier Island Chronosequence, Mark Jeffrey Stevenson
Fine Root Biomass Distribution And Production Along A Barrier Island Chronosequence, Mark Jeffrey Stevenson
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Fine roots play an important role in community development on barrier islands. Fine roots can influence nutrient losses from the soil environment along with regulating water loss based on their distribution and concentration (Nobel et al., 1989; Gleeson and Tilman, 1990). A sequential coring method was used to determine fine root biomass and total biomass along a chronosequence of barrier island dunes and swales on the Virginia Coast Reserve - Long Term Ecological Research Site. Fine root production and the effects of nitrogen fertilization were also examined using an ingrowth core method along the chronosequence. Live fine root biomass, total …
Seasonal Phytoplankton Dynamics In The Pagan River, David Wade Seaborn
Seasonal Phytoplankton Dynamics In The Pagan River, David Wade Seaborn
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The composition and seasonal abundance patterns for phytoplankton in the Pagan River, Virginia, were determined. This river is characterized as a nutrient enriched system with annual mean levels of total nitrogen and phosphorus at 1.8 and 0.8 mg/I respectively. Three phytoplankton maxima occurred during the year with the highest in fall, followed by summer and spring peaks. A diatom flora was dominant throughout the year at concentrations of 107 to 108 cells/I. Other algal populations exhibited distinct periods of abundance, which seasonally varied in magnitude and time of development. Turbidity levels were high throughout the year, with a mean secchi …
The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On The Phenology Of Roots In A Barrier Island Sand Dune Community, Everett P. Weber
The Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilization On The Phenology Of Roots In A Barrier Island Sand Dune Community, Everett P. Weber
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Little work has been done on the phenology of root growth and senescence largely due to methodological difficulties. The application of minirhizotron technology has enabled the tracking of individual roots through an entire growing season. As a result, direct measures of turnover, root growth, and an analysis of cohorts were made. Small plots on a 36 year old dune on Hog Island, a barrier island in the Virginia Coast Reserve Long Term Ecological Research Site, were fertilized with nitrogen. Minirhizotron tubes were installed in each fertilized and control plot. Each tube was sampled monthly for nine months, March through October …

Eutrophication And Macrobenthic Communities Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay: Effects Of Organic Enrichment In Pocomoke Sound, Saxis Virginia, Janice D. Mcdonnell
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The effects of organic enrichment on benthic community structure were evaluated in a field study conducted in Pocomoke Sound in the vicinity of a seafood processing plant. The empirically derived Species Abundance and Biomass (SAB) curves of Pearson and Rosenberg (1978) were used to model patterns of organic enrichment at the study site, called Pig Point, as well as two reference sites located within Pocomoke Sound. The Split Moving Windows (SMW) method was used to detect the ecotone point as defined in the Pearson and Rosenberg (1978) model and the Two Term Local Quadrat Variance (TTLQV) method was used to …
Seasonal Composition Of Mesozooplankton In The Pagan River, A Nutrient Enriched Virginia Estuary, Lillian Norman Davis
Seasonal Composition Of Mesozooplankton In The Pagan River, A Nutrient Enriched Virginia Estuary, Lillian Norman Davis
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A two year study of the mesozooplankton composition and seasonal distribution was conducted in the Pagan River, a nutrient rich tidal estuary and tributary to the lower James River. The mesozooplankton was dominated by calanoid copepods (80%), with the total zooplankton abundance peaks occurring during spring and fall. The total mean abundance, 3008/m', was somewhat lower than those found by other authors, however the mean abundance at one station approximated those means. Seventy-eight percent of the calanoid copepods were Acartia spp. that were primarily responsible for the fall increase in mesozooplankton abundance. The spring increase was primarily due to increases …

Aboveground Biomass And Net Primary Production Along A Virginia Barrier Island Dune Chronosequence, John Joseph Dilustro
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Aboveground biomass was examined along a chronosequence of dune communities on Hog Island, a Virginia Coast Reserve LTER site. The dominant species were Ammophila breviligulata and Spartina patens. Aboveground biomass was harvested monthly from ten quadrats on dunes 6, 24, 36, and 120 years old. Sampling was conducted from April to November 1993. Biomass values were greater for younger dunes. Total aboveground biomass decreased with increasing site age and ranged from 152 g m-2 on the 120 year old dune to 205 g m-2 on the 6 year old dune in October 1993. Spartina patens biomass was …
Phytoplankton Assemblages Associated With A Bloom Of Ptychodiscus Brevis Off The North Carolina Coast, Traycie Lea West
Phytoplankton Assemblages Associated With A Bloom Of Ptychodiscus Brevis Off The North Carolina Coast, Traycie Lea West
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A bloom of the dinoflagellate Ptychodiscus brevis occurred off the North Carolina coast in late 1987, and samples were forwarded by NOAA to the Old Dominion University Phytoplankton Laboratory for total phytoplankton analysis. Six sampling stations were chosen to represent different bloom scenarios and these six were clustered into three site groups based on the concentrations of statistically significant taxa. Abundances of phytoplankton taxonomic groups over time were examined in relation to P. brevis concentrations to identify any general tendencies. These results indicated the total phytoplankton concentration, and most taxonomic groups, increased at all three site groups regardless of the …

The Influence Of Temperature Salinity And Postlarval Transport On The Distribution Of Juvenile Spiny Lobsters, Panulirus Argus, In Florida Bay, Jennifer Marie Field
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Florida Bay is a major nursery for the Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus. The Bay contains a series of hardbottom or seagrass-covered basins separated by mudbanks, which serve as barriers to water circulation and presumably to transport of postlarvae. Temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in the basins and salinities range from 35 ppt to > 50 ppt. In this study I: i) investigated the physiological tolerance of spiny lobster postlarvae to combinations of temperature and salinity representative of conditions in Florida Bay, and ii) examined how postlarval availability and habitat structure influence spiny lobster recruitment into basins. I measured juvenile lobster …

Evaluation Of Long Term Changes In The Macrobenthic Community Of The Southern Branch Of The Elizabeth River, Virginia, William S. Hunley
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Long-term changes in the macrobenthos of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Virginia were investigated by comparing the present study of community structure with that described ten years earlier by Hawthorne (1980). The results indicated that dominant organisms remained relatively constant in composition but exhibited considerable fluctuation in density. Differences in diversity and spatial distribution of fauna were also observed relative to the previous decade.
Multivariate statistical analyses indicated the macrobenthos exhibited significant spatial and seasonal patterns. Sediments characterized as silts and clays predominated down river while sandier sediment types were most common farther upriver. The spatial distributions of …
The Distribution And Occurrence Of Aerobic Heterotrophic Antimicrobic-Producing Bacteria Isolated From The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Linda Lea Gilmer
The Distribution And Occurrence Of Aerobic Heterotrophic Antimicrobic-Producing Bacteria Isolated From The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Linda Lea Gilmer
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Three different estuarine microenvironments in the lower Chesapeake Bay were investigated for the occurrence and geographical distribution of antimicrobic-producing bacteria. Samples were taken from the water column, fish skin, and algal surfaces. A total of 1472 bacterial isolates were assayed for antimicrobial activity against fungal, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial test organisms. Of the total bacterial isolates assayed, 5. 2% were active antimicrobic producers. Algal surf aces were shown to have a higher incidence of antimicrobic-producing bacteria than the water column or fish skin. No antimicrobic activity was demonstrated by bacteria isolated from the flounder fish skin. The majority of the …

A Multivariate Characterization Of Assemblages Of Planktonic Mysids Decapods And Sergestids In The Chesapeake Bay Mouth Area, John Charles Seibel
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
This study is the first to focus on the assemblages of the planktonic mysids, decapods, and sergestids found in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The assemblages of these organisms in the lower Chesapeake Bay and nearby shelf were characterized using three different statistical approaches, and the methods used were evaluated for their effectiveness at delineating ecologically meaningful assemblages. Three stations were sampled across the Chesapeake mouth and one offshore, with oblique and neuston net tows. Twenty-seven larval stages, representing at least 23 species, were found in sufficient numbers to be analyzed statistically. The statistical approaches were each based upon a different …
Differential Utilization Of Allochthonous And Autochthonous Carbon By Aquatic Insects Of Two Shrub-Steppe Desert Spring-Streams: A Stable Carbon Isotope Analysis And Critique Of The Method, Alfred Lynn Mize
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Stable carbon isotope analysis, a technique that measures the ratio of stable carbon-12 to stable carbon-13 in abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems, was used to assess the differential utilization of autochthonous and allochthonous carbon by aquatic insects of two cold desert spring-streams in the Columbia Basin of Washington State. The aquatic insects of Snively Springs, a heavily overgrown and densely shaded stream, has isotopic values close to that of stream aufwuchs (substrata scrubate) indicating substantial autochthonous carbon dependence. Aquatic insects of Douglas Creek, the more open and less shaded of the two streams, were equally dependent upon autochthonous and …
Seasonal Changes In Brown Adipose Tissue And Pelage Of The Southern Short-Tailed Shrew Blarina Carolinensis, Elisa Michelle Dew
Seasonal Changes In Brown Adipose Tissue And Pelage Of The Southern Short-Tailed Shrew Blarina Carolinensis, Elisa Michelle Dew
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Winter survival mechanisms in the southern short-tailed shrew, Blarina carolinensis, were studied by examining cellular changes in interscapular brown adipose tissue (ISBAT) and pelage characteristics in specimens collected each month of the year in eastern Virginia. On capture, each specimen was anesthetized with ether and then perfused with a 2.5% glutaraldehyde-2% formaldehyde solution. ISBAT tissues were examined histologically with the transmission electron microscopy. Because BAT is know to produce heat by nonshivering thermogenesis and is more developed in winter animals than summer animals, it was hypothesized that mitochondrial area of BAT would be relatively greater in winter than in summer. …

A Laboratory Study Of Predation On The Trinidadian Guppy, Poecilia Reticulata, By Two Natural Piscine Predators: Effects Of Predator Size, Prey Size, And Habitat Complexity, Hayden Thomas Mattingly
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Test populations of different-sized guppies, Poecilia reticulata, were exposed to individuals of two natural predatory species, the pike cichlid Crenicichla a/ta and the killifish Rivulus harti, under conditions of varying prey (guppy) density and habitat complexity in the laboratory. Rivulus fed most frequently on newborn and juvenile guppies < 14 mm. Crenicichla consumed more and larger guppies than did Rivulus. The mean guppy size eaten by Crenicichla was dependent on the length of the individual predator, but as a group, the 15 Crenicichla tested were non-selective with respect to guppy size and gender. The prey gender preference of Rivulus could not he determined …
Population Dynamics Of Feral House Mice And Meadow Voles On A Dredge Disposal Site, Georgia E. Kratimenos
Population Dynamics Of Feral House Mice And Meadow Voles On A Dredge Disposal Site, Georgia E. Kratimenos
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The population dynamics of two species was studied for one year on Craney Island in Portsmouth, Virginia. This dredge disposal site provided good habitat for the house mouse, Mus musculus, whose opportunistic behaviors can withstand the sudden changes in a dynamic environment. Although the site was not optimal habitat, a population of Microtus pennsylvanicus, the meadow vole, was sustained there. Of the seven species of small mammals captured, 65% were house mice and 28% were meadow voles. Meadow voles were more successful at establishing short periods of residency than were house mice; on average, each meadow vole was …

An Autecological Study Of Pyxidanthera Barbulata In The Blackwater Ecologic Preserve Virginia, John Marc Lowenthal
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Pyxidanthera barbulata (pyxie moss), a rare and endangered subshrub, has been found in decreasing numbers in it's "pine barren" habitat. An autecological study encompassing vegetation association analysis and environmental measurements was performed in the Blackwater Ecologic Preserve, its only known location in Virginia. The preserve is being subjected to controlled burning and the effect of burning on the species was evaluated. A multivariate analysis of variance was performed to identify species associations, and simple analysis of variance was done to find trends in the environmental data. Four taxa were positively associated with P. barbulata, Gaultheria procumbens, Vaccinium tenellum, Cladonia spp., …
An Analysis Of External Features As Predictors Of Reproductive Status In Small Mammals, Kenneth Wayne Mccravy
An Analysis Of External Features As Predictors Of Reproductive Status In Small Mammals, Kenneth Wayne Mccravy
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Reproductive status in specimens of nine populations of seven species of small mammals was evaluated by examining the external reproductive features of nipple size, condition of the pubic symphysis, and vaginal condition and, in males, testis position. Usefulness of these external features in predicting true monthly breeding rates was evaluated by comparing predictions of breeding rates with true rates based on necropsy. Accuracy of predictions of reproductive status of individuals based on single external features and combinations of external features and body measurements was then analyzed at a finer level by comparing those predictions with results of necropsy of the …

Decomposition Of Roots In The Great Dismal Swamp, Edward G. Tupacz
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The decomposition rates of roots to a depth of 40 cm were estimated by two methods in four plant communities in the periodically flooded Great Dismal Swamp. Modified litter bags and a core method were simultaneously employed on three flooded sites and an unflooded mixed hardwood site. Reciprocal samples (litter from each of the other sites) were placed on each site to examine the effects of litter composition.
For the litter bags, the cedar and maple - gum sites displayed the lowest mean decay rate. However, reciprocal samples showed that roots from the cedar and mixed hardwood sites decayed the …
Age And Growth Of The Tautog, Tautoga Onitis (Pisces: Labridae), From Lower Chesapeake Bay And Coastal Waters Of Virginia, E. Brian Hostetter
Age And Growth Of The Tautog, Tautoga Onitis (Pisces: Labridae), From Lower Chesapeake Bay And Coastal Waters Of Virginia, E. Brian Hostetter
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The tautog, Tautoga onitis (Pisces: Labridae), is rapidly gaining popularity in Virginia by anglers, spearfishermen and specialized commercial interests. In Virginia, tautog are seasonally abundant on hard bottom substrates in nearshore (ca. 2-10 m) habitats and inhabit offshore wrecks and reef areas (ca. 10-30 m) year round. Habitat restriction and slow growth of the species coupled with recent technological advances in marine electronics which simplify locating tautog populations by user groups may contribute to overexploitation of tautog within the region.
Tautog were collected over a two year period from the lower Chesapeake Bay and nearshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean …
